What do you do when the world within yourself falls silent?
The million voices screaming in your mind to be free.
What do you do when they suddenly stop?
While the ground beneath you rumbles and quakes;
Slow cracks drawing ever closer to you,
Threatening to climb the walls of your mind,
And crumble them like Jericho.
Where the trumpets blew and the soldiers shouted.
Their cries for a homeland,
echoing off the walls like boulders thrown through the sky.
Showing those hiding behind the towering edifice that they had no control.
Much like the walls in our minds we build.
Hiding silently behind them,
Hoping,
Praying,
Maybe even dreaming.
That someday, a person may stumble upon us.
Willing to throw that first boulder.
And knock loose those bricks that keep us hidden away.
The bricks that so closely together contain the voices that shout at us.
The ones that say,
Beauty you do not possess,
Grace, you have none.
A mind, ha! you lost that when the first voice crept in through the night.
Telling us that no matter how hard we fight and try,
Our best isn't good enough.
It Is too little even for the rest of this planet to give the smallest of notice
It Is a waste of time
It Is a spec of sand on the ocean floor
Easily overlooked by any creature or diver.
For a moment we may believe that this world would be willing to accept us,
With all the flaws and imperfections
The dents and cracks,
The bumps and ridges unsmoothed by the passage of time.
Yet as quickly as we see the hope of that moment we can hear the world fall silent.
Feel the eyes of every living being
Looking us up and down
Side to side
Judging us from every angle and degree.
Watching and waiting to see if we take a breath or a step.
Their eyes condemning us in an instant,
Pinning us upon the ground
Leaving us again with the doubts and fear that scream at us.
Trapping us inside those ever growing walls
Where we sit and wonder
Where is my beauty?
Where is my grace?
Is my mind really so bound by sorrow and pain that I can't see myself beyond it?
And we just once want to hear someone
Yell!
Shout!
Or even scream over those walls!
Telling us that those voices are wrong
That even throughout the night where we sit and wallow in our dark thoughts.
They are still wrong.
That the constant yelling of our minds telling us that our best isn't enough
They are still wrong.
When we hear those words
hard as they may be to believe,
Then and only then
even our walls built so securely to keep us hidden within ourselves
Begin to come crumbling down.
In piles of stones, bricks, mortar and dust.
The voices trapped within ourselves fleeing and fading
To hopefully someday no longer be echoes of our souls.
So that we may stand tall
Holding ourselves up with
Beauty,
Grace,
And a mind that will amaze this world.
Finally letting our best be what its worth,
Letting the world begin to speak around us
And stepping out of the prisons we built around ourselves.
And that my friends
Is what you do when the world within yourself falls silent.

Happy Review Day!
"Much like the walls in our minds we build." This line feels a bit off, but I'm not sure how to fix it; the 'we build' is throwing off the pace, but you really need it there. I don't know, maybe it's just me, or maybe it's the time of thing that wouldn't be noticed if read aloud; syllables are much more flexible that way.
This poem has food for thought in it; I'm still digesting it (pun unintended but enjoyed).
This is going to sound harsh, and it's just my opinion, but I don't think the title makes sense. I think "Beautiful, Graceful Walls of the Mind" might work better, but either way it's a bit long. Besides that, I love the repetition of the beauty and grace throughout the piece.
I love the choice of 'you' and 'we' in the review, like it's someone taking another under their wing and teaching them how to overcome the self-doubt festering within and without. (That's obviously over-simplified of course.) Really deep message here; I REALLY enjoyed this and would love to hear it out loud.
Really, really wonderful poem.

Hello there,

Wow... This poem is really good. You use imagery in a subtle way to convey meaning. You really understand how to create an effective image and it shows in your work. The overall poem is wonderful and it creates a very vivid image in anyone's mind, as stated before. Sadly I could not read it aloud as I am in a public place but reading it in my head allowed me to imagine what you are writing about well.
My advice for you going into the future is to just focus on some grammar errors. But that's really all you need to work on and as stated in your footnote, you are editing on a phone.
I look forward to seeing more work from you
