Lūcifer

[Light-bringing, morning star]

[Another name for Satan]

A night of void it was here

The ghouls sobbing in my ears ;

In my mind and into theirs

Dripping bloody tears ;

Yet there I stood alone

Unseeing with frosty fear

Trembling gravely with fright

I closed my eyes shut tight ;

Then with a flash, gone they were

A soft avian fluttering, I heard,

There it was, the light ;

For away was the terror,

And came to me, the wonder

“Who is there?”

Shakily, I called, stark in the silence ;

No answer could I hear,

Yet I knew that you were there ;

Gone was the darkness,

And there it was, the light

It was so bright yet hollow

Giving warns to the shallow

Yet so bright was thee

And thee came down to me

There it was, the light!

Leaves fell and grew

Souls came and went -

But now, how careless I am!

With you there by my side,

I take the fears into my stride ;

Ah, call me arrogant, rich and full

For the least I am surpasses you;

There you are, the light!

But one day, you weren’t there

To shield me from the fears ;

And the void was back yet again,

For my belief faded back away

Where are you, the light?

When you arrived in hurry,

Shaking coldly with fury

Worshipped you, I did!

I stared into your azure orbs,

Bottomless as the purest soul ;

In there, as elusive as a snake, there was -

Aha, in your tear-filled eyes, I saw!

Perhaps, I have no will over yours

But I am sane enough to know ;

Thou art fair, beloved ; but alas, I must wonder,

What is it that you hide so much, I must ponder ;

Your leave I must stop, your frown I must see

But, I am sane enough to wonder,

What do you hide so much?

Next night, the void returned

And I shrieked, that you were there!

Did not stop it from coming, it didn’t,

But your eyes widened, fear ridden ;

Moved forward, you did

Screamed fiercely, you did ;

Alas, that night, firmly cocooned by your light

I might have wondered, blinded by your warmth,

For I am sane enough to ponder ;

What makes you quake so much?

As I spent the days with you,

The void was always there in me;

So one day, I cried at you

To make them go for good

The hesitance you showed, was just enough ;

For me to push you over, was just a huff,

For then you fell down instead

Where are you, my light?

When you came next, I gasped and cried

For your light did not shine so bright

All it took, a question it was ;

To know that you were not a light

Then I knew what I must do,

To keep the light to chase the fears ;

But a chaste last kiss was all it took

For my decision to shake in grief

Still bright, you were

But longing, I was ; to see it dim

After all, they are a perfect pair ;

Light and darkness, cold and warmth,

death and love, love and death

My mind firmly set

To make my wish come true ;

The light, to chase the void away,

Would now shine in me ;

And your light will slowly dim

But you will stay by me

As I held it in my hands,

A white blade, sharp and good ;

No turning back, there was - and I knew -

The void was on the blade

And welled inside me, the disgust ;

Before I threw it off,

Hardened myself with love, I did!

Still bright, you were, when I found you;

And beamed - yes - when you saw me.

I could see the fear in your eyes ;

Silently, I asked you the reason why.

As I slowly stepped closer to you,

In your tear-filled azure eyes - I saw!

Dropped the blade, I did ;

But the horrible tears were still there -

Flooding me with guilt and horror

That could not be contained ;

The light flickered bright and dim

And I fought to keep it - I swear!

Yet there you were, a smile on your face ;

And laughed, you did, while shaking like a leaf!

Your light was bright,

And there you were, the light!

Came to me, it did - the void,

The ghouls sobbing in my ears

In my mind and into theirs

Dripping bloody tears ;

I stood there, with the light

Dripping bloody tears ;

And pushed you over, oh, I did-!

With just a tiny huff!

When you fell, the light came to me ;

It was so bright yet hollow

Giving warns to the shallow

And I finally knew what it was ;

It was love, the purest of all ; yet tainted by the void ;

You fell over, but you are here, I know -

Cradled in my hands was the light, I know -

And when you smiled at me, shaking like a leaf ;

Now I know what it meant, I do - I know!

But alas, I must wonder,

Though the light is now in me ;

What is it that you hide so much, I must ponder ;

What did you know so much?

Hi there,

So my first thoughts when I read this was that I liked it. I really liked it. It actually sort of reminded my of Shakespeare if that's possible. Must have been the language and punctuation use, he used a very similar method.

Anyway, moving on from comparison of the year, I liked the way it was a narrative, and it had a nice combination of realistic and almost supernatural themes to it. I felt like I was torn between reality and fantasy at times which I felt worked really well.

I loved this line:

'The ghouls sobbing in my ears.'

It's almost unsettling in a sense, and makes me feel invaded and uncomfortable. When poetry makes you feel things, you know it's always a good poem.

I also really liked this ongoing theme and idea of there being a 'light'. Light is such an important part of reality, and the way you've taken that and integrated it says a lot about the poem as a whole. I really enjoyed reading it and I actually re-read it for pleasure it was that good.

Like another reviewer mentioned, it has some dramatic elements to it, which I thought worked really well. For instance, your use of expressive punctuation added to the whole 'feel' of the poem. It feels like we were in the head of the speaker, and listening to his/her thoughts.

I also really liked

'A soft avian fluttering.'

The words 'soft' and 'fluttering' work really well together in the sentence.

Anyway, good job and well done. I look forward to reading more of your work, and I thought this particular piece was well expressed.

Keep writing,
H.L.P

Hi there, have a nice day!
Lengthy poem that is full of dramatic elements. I love how you create the character of Lucifer with your own sense. Although it is long, and I see the poet trying to create some end rhyme, I still wonder what exactly is given in this poem.

There you are, the light!

But one day, you weren’t there

To shield me from the fears ;

And the void was back yet again,

For my belief faded back away

Where are you, the light?

Do 'the light' refers to Lucifer? I noticed you cynical tone in discussing the matter between you and the light. At first you do fear, but to get to know the light, you slowly began to familiar with it / rise up to questioning him. Actually it seems to show the way you think about how he is assumed as a morning star / bringing light , but such is not meant that much for you.
For your light did not shine so bright

All it took, a question it was ;

To know that you were not a light

Then I knew what I must do,

To keep the light to chase the fears ;

Now I see the point!
I am impressed with the imagery that you create. But some seem to not bring any clear purpose (element of bombastic). Maybe by summarizing the poem, it will be more obvious (without altering the meaning). Actually you have a good idea to be given in form of poetry. There is no doubt about it. So keep writing and good luck!
Kudos, cheers.

Thank you, so, so much. I'll actually answer some of your questions! Yes, the light does refer to Lucifer, although I started out as a concept of an angel. It somehow became Lucifer. I know, weird right?

Maybe, if I tried to summarize this poem, it would go like this - 'I' am lost in 'the void', then the light comes. (Lucifer comes). Then, 'I' start to obsess, or rather, fall in love with him. But then, 'I' starts to feel like that Lucifer is hiding something.

'Thou art fair, beloved ; but alas, I must wonder,

What is it that you hide so much, I must ponder ;

Your leave I must stop, your frown I must see

But, I am sane enough to wonder,

What do you hide so much?'

This indicates that 'I' has gotten way too obsessed and attached to Lucifer, and is starting to suspect Lucifer. Like, common human stuff ; being suspicious and nervous about what others might have inside their heads?

This is where there are two ways the poem can be interpreted.

1) She doesn't know that her obsession is starting to corrupt Lucifer, but it is. Then, finally, she thinks that he is weak, untrust-able (that's not a word, I know, sorry) and takes 'the light' for herself by corrupting him farther with 'the blade'. It's not literally the blade, just to let you know. Then at last, she wonders why Lucifer seemed to know something.. something terrible ('I' corrupting him)

2) Or, Lucifer is 'I's imagination she made up because she was having a really hard time in 'the void', and then the imagination of Lucifer is starting to waver, leave, as her imagination starts to go wild. So, to sum the second ending up, 'I' is completely bonkers.

Thank you for reviewing, again!

Awe, I appreciate your explanation! Thanks for giving response :D

Wow, there is a lot of stuff in the poem. This poem is well written, to be subtle first. This caught my attention- just by the title. :) . Reading through the poem I could see the different things that you described as you wrote it. You use powerful imagery in this poem, even if it is through the use of small words. I love the "addiction" that the person in the poem holds for the light, as it serves to protect him/her. It shows how much he/she thinks that after the first time, they can not survive without it. It is a marvelous poem, and it one of my favorites that I have read on this site. I am glad that I stopped by and read this poem. It is a wonder piece of poetry. If I were an old fashioned man (If I were to be a man), I would tip my top hot to you.

Thank you, your review really means a lot!

Nouns can verb very well actually, they verb better than some verbs do.
