In Some kind of monster land

Chapter One

The other monsters don’t bother to talk to me. Well, Beatrice picks on everybody because that’s how she is and Jenny teases me because she thinks I’m weird and a “spoiled attention seeker”. (I’m not even sure what that last part really means but whatever.)

Now, I’m pulling Ralph and Eddie through the pond that I swim in, the pond that is a portal to the human world, because they (mostly Ralph) have figured out that there is a human watching us. Now they need me.

It’s nice to talk to other monsters, but I hope that this is not temporary. I hope that they can be my friends after this.

I do have feelings.

Chapter Two

I see sunlight glimmering above the water, sunlight that is not as bright nor beautiful as it is where I’m from, which means we are in the human world.

I swim up to the surface of the water, pulling Eddie and Ralph up as in well. Ralph is the only one who needs to gasp for air. I’m accustomed to water and Eddie, being half skeleton and half ghost, does not need to breathe.

We’re in a pond that is across from a bright pink mansion with white lace trim. Flowers entangle themselves around the structure, blooming with the color of the mansion. There are birds chirping amongst the trees, butterflies amongst the leaves. It’s a beautiful place that reminds me of my garden, but I know better than to judge appearances.

“This is where we have to go?” Ralph asks, incredulous.

Chapter Three

“I know it doesn’t look like what you expect, but yes. We have to go here.”

I begin swimming up to the other side. The boys are asking me a lot of questions, most of them being “how” and “why” questions. I don’t have time to answer them. They’ll figure it out later.

I already feel fear spiraling inside of me the more I look at that mansion. I know that Andrea won’t be happy to see us. She won’t want to see me again after last time.

But we’ll be out of here quickly. It will be okay.

Chapter Four

FLASHBACK

I swim up to the other side of the bond until I get to land. I latch my fingers over to the grass and climb out of the water.

It’s a little hard to do it at first, but once I get on land, my teal mermaid tail begins to melt and separate into two human legs. It doesn’t really hurt, it just feels like mild stinging.

I have to quickly cover my mouth with my hands when a scream threatens to spill out, because I never get used to my wings protruding out of my back. As a half-mermaid and half-fairy, whenever I’m in water, my tail comes, but when I’m on land, my wings come.

My wings hurt and I don’t want the humans to know. I’m just here to take a break from everything. I’m not supposed to stay here long.

I’m not supposed to be found.

Chapter Five

“We all have to be quiet. We don’t want Andrea to hear us.”

Ralph and Eddie are each holding onto a hand of mine. My tail has disappeared and now I have wings. I’m flying next to a window, trying my best to think about how to open it with my magic.

“Eirisse?”

“Yes?” I ask. I’m a little surprised that Ralph sounded so scared to say my name, but maybe he’s just scared of what’s about to happen. I don’t blame him. This is scary.

Chapter Six

“Are you still mad at me for asking you why you didn’t call yourself a siren?”

What? That is what Ralph is so worried about? That one time? Honestly, it’s not even that big of a deal and I’m surprised that he’s still thinking about it.

“No. Why do you ask?”

I can feel my magic surging through me, channeling towards the window. I’ll open it and then me and the boys will be free.

Chapter Seven

My magic comes out of my fingertips in blue sparkles and shatters the window. I fly us all in, letting go of them both as soon as we’re inside. My hands were getting tired.

“I thought you were offended and you didn’t want to talk to me anymore.”

He says that as if we were friends at all! He only talked to me that one time! And I don’t even care, it’s not that important.

“It’s fine, Ralph.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

Chapter Eight

FLASHBACK

I can’t believe I’m actually in her house! I’ve come here a few times but I never once went inside her house. I do not think that she’s home, so it’s probably okay to be here.

The hardwood floors are very shiny and polished. There are paintings of flowers and little girls in pastel dresses running in meadows or playing pretend with each other. This house feels very…girly. I like it. But I wonder when this hall ends?

“Hmm…you don’t belong here.”

Chapter Nine

“We’re getting a little bit closer to her room.” I say as I lead them.

We are walking down the same hallway that I walked when I first came here, when I was first found. I hope that we’ll go home without being detected. The thing is, I don’t know when she is or isn’t home. Usually she’s not, but I don’t know. Something unexpected could happen.

“Why does she want revenge on us?”

Chapter Ten

Eddie has asked the question without any fear, like he’s only wondering. And maybe he feels like there is nothing to fear right now, but he shouldn’t trust feelings that just come.

“I think it’s because she sees us as destroying humanity’s sanity by terrifying them. It doesn’t matter if we actually do it or not, if it’s how she feels, then she will go after us. We’re here by the way.” I say.

We’ve reached the wooden door with white orchids drawn on the surface. I turn the rusted, gilded knob, the boys following behind me.

We’re doing good so far. Let’s keep that up.

Chapter Eleven

The room has nothing in it except for a white box TV that shows bright colors and characters that move in a senseless motion. There are white lace curtains on the window, but that’s about it.

There are twisting white wires connected to the TV that seem to blend in with the floor, like roots on a tree.

“We just need to destroy the wires. The wires lead to our town.” I say.

Chapter Twelve

“That’s it? That’s all we have to do?” Eddie asks. He doesn’t have any eyes, but I can see the confusion in his eye sockets.

Yes, that’s what we have to do. But I’m not going to explain it to him right now. I pull apart wires with the same magic I used to open the window. The boys take the hint and start breaking off wires with their claws. I think I might actually be able to do this if I’m careful enough.

I wasn’t careful before, but maybe this time will be different.

Chapter Thirteen

There are still more wires for us to pull out, but I think we’re making good time here, I think-

The door slams open. I freeze. My body does it before I can stop myself.

“Creatures? In my house?”

Chapter Fourteen

FLASHBACK

Nails grab onto the back of my dress and lift me up from the ground. I beat my wings and begin to fly away. I’m not going to let her take me. I’m not-

Wires wrap around my waist, keeping me from leaving. They’re coming from the ground. I didn’t see them before.

She’s walking in front of me, her blue eyes glimmering.

“You can leave alive if you never tell anyone about this. Ever. I’ll never appear in your dreams again if you agree to do this.” Andrea smiles.

Chapter Fifteen

The wires coil around us before I can say a word. The boys are shocked, screaming out in confusion. Ralph’s eyes are wide with terror as he howls, Eddie’s expressionless face has a hint of terror.

I feel fright begin to constrict itself around my heart. I try not to be scared, especially with what I am in the monster world, but Andrea’s presence just does that to monsters.

At least my little sisters, Isolabella and Elsinore, aren’t here. They’re at home, safe.

That’s good.

Chapter Sixteen

“I told you not to come back. That’s all I asked of you. And yet you did. You didn’t come alone, I see.”

Andrea glances at Ralph and Eddie before turning her attention back to me. Her blue eyes are burning as though she’s mad at me, judging me, even, like I did something wrong. Like she only wanted me to do the right thing.

As if the “right thing” was keeping quiet about this.

“That’s selfish of you, you know? Bringing your friends here?” Andrea shakes her head.

I try not to get angry too. Again, that’s proving to be a little difficult with her. But I’ll try. I’ll try.

Chapter Seventeen

“You’re selfish too. You’re hurting all of us just because you’re mad about your son becoming one of us. But we didn’t take him! We can’t control what our parents did! So it’s not fair-“

“It’s not fair that I had to lose him!” Andrea cries out.

Eddie and Ralph don’t know the truth about Mr. Smells-like-the-dead. They don’t know about the dream I had.

I was going to tell them sometime, but maybe I won’t have to.

Chapter Eighteen

I’m in a red, blue, and yellow painted room. The furniture is white with those colors as polka dots on its surface. I don’t see a door or a window.

But I hear circus music, just like the kind Jenny and her parents would play. It’s a looping calliope, cracked and melodious.

I see her, too. Andrea is standing in a far off-corner, hugging her arms close to her body as she cries-or is she laughing? I don’t really know.

Chapter Nineteen

“I saw Mr. Smells-like-the-dead in a dream I had. Except he was human. And he went to our monster world and became a clown demon after that.”

“What?” Eddie asks, hardly believing what I said.

“You monsters made my son one of you, that’s what.” Andrea screeches, almost like a banshee, but not quite as loud.

Chapter Twenty

The boys are both struggling to get out, tearing through the wires with their claws. But more keeps getting made.

I try to channel the magic that is within me to destroy the wires, to shatter them into pieces. It’s not working. Maybe if I keep trying and trying-

The cartoon music blares loudly in my eyes. She’s turning it on.

It’s starting.
