I was a tree.
Unmoving, steady,
Unfazed by things.
***
I freely gave
Expecting nothing
From those in need.
***
To others, I
Was an open book.
Yes, but not quite.
***
I keep secrets,
Stories of my own
Deep in my rings.
***
Only few were
Able and allowed
To see in me.
***
You can read me.
But do you really
Know me for me?
***
I thought this phase
Would last for ages.
It gets lonely.
***
Then you guys came
Penetrating deep
Through the rough wood.
***
Disarmed me with
Authenticity
And thoughtfulness.
***
I let you in
My inner circles
So willingly.
***
You are the ones
That see my story,
Whole and complete.
***
Please don't hurt me.
I’ve done it once and
It gave me wounds.
***
But I trust you,
Friends dearest to me.
I really do.
***
I hope my love
For all of you is
Not fruitless.
***
Because if you,
Cut my heart open
And peer deeply,
***
I’d give my life
To save yours
Willingly.
***

Hello, alpaca!
Been a bit since I've reviewed for you, but here I am again! Let's get right in!
As always, I really enjoy your poetry. Here we have heartfelt poem about a person giving themselves to another in the form of friendship. You start the poem by describing life before these friendships. It was steady, nothing unusual particular. The stanza right below the first stanza tells me that the person here was a selfless giver in the way that he/she did not receive anything in return for his/her kindness. And this was normal so it was nothing unusual.
I really like this stanza because it gives me a very vivid image that while maybe not what you intended, I really liked. I pictured a 3-ringed binder full of secrets and stories kept to the main character alone, something that he/she had created in secrecy and kept hidden from all eyes but his/her own.
The next stanzas imply that the person is a quiet almost secluded person who does not spend time socializing. Others must be the ones to approach the individual and ask for friendship first as is implied by the fact that the book is open to be read, but even then no one really seems to understand the individual.
Now while this individual does feel secure in his/her own little world, he/she seems lonely and lacking as seen in the next stanza.
This part was so heartfelt. "you guys" adds a really personal touch. Whoever these praised individuals are they really matter to the main character. They went out of their way to include the main character and bring him/her into the new circle.
And yet even after this, the individual still feels insecure and worried. Yet, despite these feelings he/she does still does give these friends his/her trust. The last stanza was also so sweet. He/she is hesitant to say how much her friends are loved. But deep down inside they are held very, very close.
Overall, beautiful little poem here! I have no recommendations or suggestions!
Happy holidays!

Wow thanks for that wonderful review! Happy that I was able to get the full meaning across. :>
Of course!!
I’m listening to the song “Somewhere Only We Know - Keane” while reading this and for some reason that makes me tear up. I’m always hooked when reading interpretations about friends or friendships in general and this is one of the poems that stood out to me.
“I thought this phase
Would last for ages.
It gets lonely.
***
Then you guys came
Penetrating deep
Through the rough wood.”
These two stanza’s stood out to me the most, especially the line “I thought this phase would last for ages.” because it resonates to me in the ways i couldn’t explain. It perfectly captures the narrative of a person, who thought wouldn’t have anyone to live their stories with and read the past chapters of their lives—who thought wouldn’t have anyone to share little moments with for a long time—finding people who resonate, people make you break down the wall you’ve build around yourself and how they get to see your vulnerable sides and chapters of your life that you never expected to happen.
And how it was completely unintentional, friendships are unintentional—they happen ever so naturally and leave you wondering, ‘When and how?’
At least this is my interpretation of this, I might be wrong, but this is how I view it and would like to view it. Thank you so much for writing this TvT, makes me appreciate the people I have met throughout my life so far.
Aww thanks for the review! Yes you interpreted the poem rightly :>
This poem is for the friends and mentors I appreciate so deeply words can't describe it. Glad you enjoyed it!
