One hundred thirty-three

In Poems!

Slightly harsh view of weight loss here, but a poem I’m rather proud of. Reviews would be lovely. :)

don’t look at it.
don’tlookatit, don’tlookatit, don’tlookatit.
aren’t you smarter than to be a slave to it?
aren’t you?
isn’t one-hundred thirty-three just a number?
               to everyone else,
but not to you.
walk away.
               go slip on those size five jeans
(or do you feel like squeezing on a three?)
don’t even glance down-
               (you know what will happen if you do)-
walk away.
               just do it.

{One-hundred twenty-eight}

good girl
               i know you’re learning
(and trying so hard)
you still have to eat breakfast, you know.

{One-hundred twenty-six}

don’t you know that
(skinny is relative?)
and that the tags on your jeans
are just meant to make you feel
               fat
(not reflect on your character.)
and don’t you know-
               you’re smarter than you seem-
that having hipsandthighsandcurves
might actually be-
               even sort of pretty?

{One-hundred nineteen}

i know you that you used to be
(maybe more than a little overweight)
But you were eightnineten
               and ate whatever the hell you wanted
(what do you expect?)
I honestly don’t care what people said back then
               (the past is the past, after all)
because they’re saying the
               (exact opposite) now.

{One-hundred thirteen}

You know what?
(society is shit)
And your self-image?
               (absolutely delusional)
nobody is every going to be satisfied by you
               (least of all the people you pretend not to be impressed by.)

{One-hundred eleven}

oh, and by the way,
               One (ittsy-bittsy) salad
isn’t good for you
(ever heard of calories?)
and anyone who gives a damn
 is wondering how such a pretty girl could think she was imperfect.
               (or even know the word ‘fat’.)

{One-hundred seven}

honey, the whole world’s waiting for you to understand
the scale just another number,
and size five can’t ever define you,
and healthy is skinny enough.

{One-hundred three}

So damn society
(really, everyone should)
and cap the part of you that’s always crying skinny.
Because (don’t you know?)
size is just a number
and fat is just a word.

{ninety-nine}

(and one-hundred thirty-three is thirty-four pounds you don’t have anymore.)

Pay attention to while reviewing:
Usage of parentheses and these thingies {}
My counting down of weight, new additon, don't know what I think of it yet.

Please don't ever feel nervous about requesting a review. D: I love reviewing, and I hope when I do it's helpful, so why should you feel nervous about wanting help on your piece? Request as often as you'd like, love~

Now, you not at the bottom that you want people to take note of the parentheses. Well, I think you should, too. I think you've gotta rework a couple lines, 'cause it seems like the intent is for us to see the stuff inside as additional, but if you take those phrases out it sometimes ruins the sentences. This can be fixed by rearranging words. For example:

don’t you know that
(skinny is relative?)
and that the tags on your jeans

If you take out the addition, you have: "Don't you know that and the tags on your jeans"

All you gotta do is put the and in the parentheses (you can lose the question mark), take out the second that, and you'll be in business again.

used to be
(maybe more than a little overweight)
But you were eightnineten

Here, too, you just have to take overweight out of the parentheses. You can even leave it on the same line that it's on. c:

The next thing I think you need to think about is the voice. Who is speaking this? Even if you don't have a specific person in mind, you've gotta keep in consistent, because at one point you break into I:

I honestly don’t care what people said back then
(the past is the past, after all)

And it shakes everything up. Keep it consistent so we can focus on the message instead of the delivery style.

Now, as for the material and the way you've written your sentences. I think you might want to consider approaching this a different way. I don't know if it's just 'cause I'm jaded, but I feel like I've heard all these words in these exact patterns before. "Fat is just a number" (okay, not that, but you know what I mean). Those little phrases everyone says when trying to talk about weightloss and weight loss problems. That's not to say that this isn't an important topic. I want to see you talk about it successfully and artfully, is all. Laying everything out like a dialogue doesn't evoke much. I don't feel anything when I read this. Instead, I logically process that this person is having a down fall and I should feel bad, but the poem doesn't hit me viscerally. It's far too explain-y to engage me.

So I'd challenge you to go beyond the "weight is just a number" and try to access the feeling beyond that. Like, I know for me it's a challenge 'cause food reminds me of family and happiness, and I feel like if I deny it, I'm trying to be better than my family, which leads to a really emotional battle for me. This person doesn't have the same problem, but she has her own, and if you accessed whatever it is, it might become more interesting, emotional, and engaging.

Otherwise, the weight markers serve as a good way to break up stanzas. Also, a note: I used to use the {} all the time because THEY ARE SO PRETTY, but I came to realize they actually look weird to other readers. You and I have a taste for them, but we gotta leave that behind and use them when they're actually intended to be used.

I hope this was helpful. If you have questions, I'd love to talk to you more about them. c: Just PM me anytime~

Good luck and keep writing!

I love this. It's long but it reads fast, and the informal voice really got into my head. A lot of the writing on eating disorders/weight loss are very dark, yet this one keeps positive throughout. Some of it came off as a tad confusing, especially the {One-hundred nineteen} segment. Still, It seems personal and I love the parenthesis. Just clear up a few of the lines.

Thank you! The {one hundred something} lines were indicating weight loss as the poem went on. I figured that may be confusing. Thanks for the review!

That's so sweet, my mum would be crying if she read this. Because she's over weight but she's proud of it, it doesn't stop her from wearing bright and tight clothes because she loves her body and she's prefect the way she is

First and foremost i would like to congratulate you on how bold and determined you are!However you were able to come up with such a structure is wonderful and I would wish to be taught on how to! Basic poem with correct grammar and a good platform on which emotions were shown. But I would personally urge the writer to develop language that as people read her 'products' hearts would easily be captured.
