Why

In Poetry

I live on planet Earth.

I am a human being.

I breathe the same air as all of you.

So why don't I understand?

I don't understand

The way things just don't seem to bother people

Like, I can't be the only one who notices how loud the fridge humming is?

Or how uncomfortable cotton is?

Or how eye contact is unnecessary?

How can you go to sports games

And concerts

And never bat an eye?

It's sound torture.

It's all wrong.

The fabric on my shirt

wrong

The way you looked at me

wrong

The way the birds sound

wrong

It's all wrong.

Why don't you understand?

I don't get it.

I feel like someone else

watching from the sidelines.

It's not fair

why can't I be Normal?

Why can't I be The Same As You?

Why?

Alone in the noise

Under the weight

Trapped in the dark

I can't escape

Strange to the rest

Make me like them

Paint me in grey
And steady my hand
Drain out the sea
To give me the sand

Build me a wall
To cover the light
Make me a stone
In the middle of night

I must say I relate to feeling alienated while surrounded by the same species. Feeling like you're from another world while stuck in a world that wants to shape you like the rest in it. But somehow your feelings don't coordinate with the rest. Thus in the differences its hard to rest because they all put you to the test. And makes you question why are you you and not like them. Strang to the rest making you feel a stranger with unrest. When you just want to be your best like the rest. But this aching stress of being different won't let you rest easy especially with the noise that only irritates you and the weight of being differently shaped in a world that expectes you to be of similar contruct or likeness with the rest. While you lose your design in the darkness you can't escape because in the light you feel as Montessori shape puzzle but your shape doesn't seem fit no matter how much you try to squeeze to the rght slot and thats when you get caught. Stumped. When you're see and showed thats not where you go,thats not where you fit. That's not how to be.

Hey there! It’s St. Patrick’s Day event review time!

Image

☘ 1st Leaf: First Impressions & Initial Thoughts

This was a poem I enjoyed a lot! You portrayed autism very vividly.

☘ 2nd Leaf: Critique & Points of Confusion

I wonder if you’re relying too much on being direct and blunt when the poem could benefit from some subtlety?

Reading the poem it became very obvious to me that you were writing about autism, and I feel like some subtler way of announcing that the poem was about autism would serve it well. As it is it feels kind of like you don’t have much faith in the reader, which is valid but something to consider.

Could be as simple as removing the bolding of the letters that spell AUTISM.

☘ 3rd Leaf: Details & Favorite Lines

I like how Normal and The Same As You are capitalized. The lines about what is “wrong” are what do the most work out of the entire poem. Obviously, as I’ve already alluded to, I thought the imagery was great all around.

☘ 4th Leaf: Theories & Questions

Well, it’s pretty obviously about autism. I guess a question I have is if you were inspired by yourself or by a friend?

Altogether this thing really came together nicely, though I think it would be good to consider that about the subtlety.

ty. I was inspired by myself and i''ll try to fix some of the un-subtle details.

THIS IS SO REAL. I feel like you've put something I experience every day into words, which is something I personally have never been able to do. I really like your word choice and the way you ordered the lines. My fav part was the section at the end, idk why. Something I think you could do in future is use more poetic devices, like metaphors maybe? I always find that those make the poem really interesting to me. overall a great poem, about real experiences!
(Hopefully it works as a review this time, sorry for so many comments)

ty! And i'll use the advice!

Hold on, that didn't count as a review. lemme add some stuff and resubmit it to see if that works...
