BRVO!!!!! I LUV IT...KEEP ME POSTED ON IDEAS
*SOBS* I JUST TYPED UP LIKE SOOOOOOO MUCH AND IT LOGGED ME OUTTT! *sobs* I'm getting so frustrated with this site because it logs me off at random times and especially when i'm in the middle of something. *mentally stabs YWS*
Okay! starting all over again.... *sob* I love how this has started out. It's jumped right into the plot and keeps moving throught the entire thing. The characters are well-developed and I can tell this will be a great story once you've gotten well into it.
First off, you introduced a whole bunch of characters in the same chapter and in the same short timespan. It gets confusing and tends to make you want to jump to quick descriptions as well. For instance:
These descriptions are just stated instead of stirred into the story. It just says what the character is like smack dab in the middle of everything. As a reader, I tended not to pick up every word of this. It's so straight-forward when there could be other ways of spreading it all out throughout the entire story or even throughout the chapter instead of just one paragraph.
This is really interesting and everything, but it just keeps going! You need to add a bit of description in between and break it into a new paragraph every time the story takes a new turn. Try talking about the setting perhaps, or the characters' reactions. It'll be easier to follow if it isn't in one big chunk like this.
teehee. I enjoyed this part a lot. I sat there giggling the entire time.
Keep it up. I really like the way this is going and how you've jumped into the story without saying exactly what was up. There are interesting characters and everyone knows that if your characters are good, the rest of the story is good as well. I hope what I've said helps you fixing this chapter. I'll be reading the next one tomarrow as it's already 10:10. =] PM with questions or if you want me to clarify something. It was great reading your post!
thanks all! i'll fix those problems as soon as possible. i'm grateful for the suggestions!
It's good so far, but needs a little bit more work, Keep it up though
It's a good story, and think you should keep the names. I agree with Writersdomain sugestions, but it is still a good story.
Hey Dark Magik!
This is a pretty good beginning to your story. Your characters are being developed quite well and coming across clearly; your plot is intriguing. Some good things happening here. There were only a few things I wanted to point out.
- For the most part, your pace is good and steady, but when you get to the Aramber/Dumark conversation where Dumark tells his little story, your pace suddenly lurches forward and that part seems very abrupt. I think you can do more with that scene to make it fit better.
- When Storch tells Aramber, Rapalin and Deski about Steersville, they really don't seem all that panicked. Maybe that is just their personalities, but I feel that part was very emotionally detached. You say that Deski gasped and such, but still, I didn't feel her surprise or her worry.
- When Deski goes into that tangent about how she pledged herself to Belizer and how she would have to choose between Steersville and Belizer, it also seemed a little sudden. I would think she would show some suspicious signs when she first hears of it and I also don't think you should give away so much of her predicament so early; I think it would be fascinating to have that unravel throughout the journey. Your decision, though.
Er, I don't like 'hurriedly'. The word turned gives me the image of someone turning away more slowly; if she's frightened, would she be jerking away or something more abrupt?
Saying she smiled a smile is very repetitive.
You use Deski's name a lot in this paragraph, enough that is sounds awkward. You might want to replace some Deski's with she's
The sentence in red is a bit strange. The 'for' makes it sound longwinded. I suggest saying 'when they walked in, he didn't look up' and ending the first sentence at 'thoughts'. Also, after the sentence beginning with Storch you begin a lot of sentence with 'he'. This makes the sentence structure very repetitive, so I suggest varying it a little.
That's one mouthful of a sentence
I think you mean was
repetition of 'with'
Er, that part in red is a bit longwinded. I think it would be better if you just say he values his things as much as magic.
don't like the repetition of 'thought'
Um, it doesn't seem to me that what she is referring to has been resolved. Sure, she has figured what she is going to do, but I would think she would be more anxious than feeling better about this.
This part seems very, very abrupt. Maybe mention him seeing the children before they come? More description might also help or perhaps some dialogue.
repetition of looked
Here you are telling way too much. We're in the middle of the characters journeying out and suddenly - boom! You dump all this info on Rapalin on us. I think it would be better if you 1. spread this in out and 2. showed some of the personality things instead of telling them.
I don't understand the red part.
Despite my criticism, this was pretty good, and I enjoyed your characters! Now, for the fun part. Character impressions.
Aramber: Aramber seems to be rather lighthearted; he toys with his magic (which bugs Deski) and resents his younger brother for ordering him around. We haven't really gotten a major glimpse into him yet, but I'll be interested in seeing how he turns out.
Deski: She's fun.
Rapalin: My fave.
Storch: I'm not sure about him yet. He is the very educated type and while he seems serious, his heated reaction to Rapalin's magic is comical. Will be interesting.
Nicely done and on this piece and I can't wait to read more! Keep writing and PM me if you have any questions.
