Why are they watching me?

In Poetry

The mind withers, and the mind rots away,

The summers in the sun and the winters wrapped up are forgotten,

The walks in the park and the walks on the beach forgotten,

The life you lived forgotten.

They watch and they pray,

They beg for you to understand,

To blink your eyes and squeeze their hand,

But you can’t, the open eyes a façade,

You are trapped behind them and what is shown is a different man.

You slumber silently as your mind decays,

As the memories that you have collected slip from your grasp,

You can sense them, the feelings you had, the tastes and the smells,

But you don’t understand them,

You don’t understand why they watch at your bedside,

Why they wipe your mouth and squeeze your hand.

Death is a cruel shadow,

It watches over you as it steals what little dignity you have left,

It watches you like they watch you,

Waiting for you to wake up, to snap out of it,

To remember their faces and smile when you see them.

But Death is a cruel shadow,

Creative and relentless,

He gazes at raw flesh,

I want to swat him away, expel his hold over you,

But it is too late and he has you,

You breathe and you sleep,

But the man I know is gone, he left this world months ago.

Oh my goodness, this is such a sad and touching poem.
I can relate so much to it because so many people have died in the past year that I knew very well however I don't think i would've been able to handle myself the way I do now if I was actually sitting by their bedside, watching them die.

The opening lines of your poem are truly memorable.

"The mind withers, and the mind rots away,

The summers in the sun and the winters wrapped up are forgotten,

The walks in the park and the walks on the beach forgotten,

The life you lived forgotten."

What I loved is that you repeated the word "forgotten" again, and again, and again. It hit deep to me because nobody wants to die and have everything the lived for be wiped away with them but for some reason each line that ended with the word "forgotten" sort of seemed to seal that fate. I loved how you included examples of exactly what was being forgotten, not by you, but by the person who was dying. Their walks, the seasons, all of it. Almost as if you were speaking to the person and reminding them that forgetting would be inevitable.

"They beg for you to understand,

To blink your eyes and squeeze their hand,

But you can’t, the open eyes a façade,

You are trapped behind them and what is shown is a different man.

You slumber silently as your mind decays..."

The rhyme scheme here was perfect! You describe the image of a dying man perfectly with few words, which I find quite remarkable. Especially the line that says "you slumber silently as your mind decays.." A subtle but powerful indication of death; by this point in the poem I knew what was going on.
I loved how you personify death, not as being a person (as most usually do with the image of a grim reaper) but as being a "shadow." Dark and sneaky.
My favorite line, and I think the line that stuck with me the most, was:

"But the man I know is gone, he left this world months ago."

I am breathless. You are a talented and awesome writer. There is nothing I could possibly critique you on with this one.

Write on, Love!!!

I am really glad that you liked it. It was actually quite hard to write. Not physically but emotionally without sounding too dramatic. It was a recent event in my life and it really hits home. Thanks.

You know that moment when you're confused, and then all of a sudden the light bulb goes off and you understand whatever you didn't understand before? Well I just experienced that reading this poem. I was reading it, and about half way through I had my little aha! moment. So I'm not entirely sure I understand what you meant exactly, but I like that because there is room for a reader to see what they see. Your language is very beautiful. I like how you portrayed the points of view of the suffering, instead of the healthy. Some of your punctuation doesn't make sense, so I would take a look at that. A comma vs. a period can make a big difference in the flow of the piece. Your ideas and images are really great, so overall good job.

I didn't know how to separate my paragraphs, so when I submitted the whole thing got stuck together. Hence the apparent random periods. Thanks for the comment.

Hey, LMJRayner. I'm back to review another work of yours!

I think you want to make me cry. I really think you do. This was just - wow - it was really emotive, I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes (though I didn't shed any), I was trying my hardest. Just a few weeks ago, I entered a competition called "Cause us Emotional Pain", but it finished and it has it's winners (me being one). I'm sure if you had entered you would have won first prize in the Poetry section as it was unbelievably moving. So touching. So heartfelt. It was as if you had poured your heart and soul into this piece. You made it come alive. I could picture everything so vividly - which was awful in a sense that it was upsetting - but it shows how good a poet you are! It certainly was incredible. Definitely a piece to get featured or at least be in the Literary Works. Sorry, sorry! I'm doing too much complimenting.
Okay, so I like how you used the rhyme scheme - even that had a meaning behind it, showing us how we can't escape from death, we're trapped. Although it was forced, it ran smoothly and as I read this aloud, it didn't clog up in my throat, it didn't seem choppy. Your pace was also good, not too fast, not too slow. Your imagery is absolutely brilliant. Like I said previously, you paint a picture in our heads, really making it come alive. I felt as I were actually there.
Great reading. Thank you for posting this!

Yours sincerely,
Traunt

Hey Traunt, thanks for the review, I'm glad it connected with you in some way, I guess that's the whole point so I'm doing something right. Your kind words will spur me on to eventually get those tears :)
