You don't read deep enough into my poetry.

There's more than what meets the eye.

Can't you see? Can't you see what it means to me?

No, obviously you can't; you're blind.

You're oblivious to the fact that there's more to see;

more to read, past the frivolous imagery

that's dressing on the cake gifted to me.

I only share 'cause I can't eat it all.

---

Writing poetry is a selfish act.

Writing, in general, is solely for the author.

Whatever is leftover from their midnight snack,

that's what you, the reader, get.

Don't worry, they'll heat it up for you. Relax!

Enjoy the show, they'll handle the rest.

But, oh, I forgot, you can't see for crap.

---

Don't delve deep into this one.

There's no underlying message.

No hidden meaning---it's just for fun.

I just wanted to remind you of your duty.

Use it wisely and when called for, little one.

Hey, yo, Jadefox! Strange here on this wonderful review day and I have a review for you!

I'm going to say this again, this is accusatory. But, this is one sided, too. I'm not trying to insult you or anything, but there's a reason why poetry is considered art. This feels like a demeaning poem directed towards reviewers who "don't read deep enough", but that's not the real problem. The problem is how poetry is interpreted.

People try to write poetry using recurring themes and hidden value in it to make it special, but when reviewers don't see this, they get mad. They think that their "masterpiece" of a work got wrongly interpreted and it's ridiculous. I've seen this happen so many times, and as a common poet, this gets on my nerves a little bit.

Poetry means nothing.

Here's a tip: next time you write, don't have any intended meaning at all. What makes that art is to see how the minds of the readers work. How they read what, how they think, all that. Leave to open for interpretation and watch them work it out. It's wonderful, and I highly recommend it.

[quote]No, obviously you can't; you're blind[/b]
I'm one for biting satire, but this was just too rude. It seems like the MC is only one sided, as if they did nothing wrong. They did, actually. They expected people to see the same thing as other people. Everybody is different, so that doesn't work.

This seems like a lack of acknowledgement on their own faults, which doesn't seem so nice. This may be why people gave crap to it, because it doesn't recognize faults on the MC's side. Just, a tip if you do write something like this again, make it a bit more satirical.

Good job, keep writing, and stay groovy!

Hi there, Jadefox! Sorry for the short review, but (as you'll see below) you can feel free to PM me with a follow-up.

Ready? Set? Go!

Introduction:

I'd really be curious to know how much of this poem is truthful. You tagged it as "humor", so I'm assuming that some of the concepts here are based in fact and some in fiction. Anyway.

Grammar, Nitpicks, Phrasing - The :

You don't read deep enough into my poetry.

This is obviously a very straightforward first line, and I appreciate that. But it seems (for lack of a better word) a bit clunky. Perhaps this is because "deep" sounds better in an adverbial form ("deeply"). I don't know. Maybe I'm just being weird. ;)

No, obviously you can't; you're blind.

This line would flow much better if you omitted the "no" and replaced the "obviously" with "apparently". So it would become "Apparently you can't: you're blind."

I only share 'cause I can't eat it all.

This is an example of a line that breaks up your rhyme scheme. Your poetic choices are your poetic choices, but I'd still advise one more read-through for little details like these. Each and every syllable has the power to attract or to drive readers away from your work.

Writing, in general, is solely for the author.

Again, there's a phrase here that breaks up the flow of your poem, "in general". I can see how sometimes it could seem necessary, as a sort of disclaimer (because not all writing is 'solely for the author').

There's no underlying message.

No hidden meaning---it's just for fun.

I'd suggest replacing the period after "message" with a comma and making the "no" lowercase. Also, perhaps consider omitting one of the hyphens in that phrase. So... "There's no underlying message, / no hidden meaning--it's just for fun."

Overall Content:

**Edit: I just looked at some of the reviews below, and I agree with Morrigan. This poem does have a certain... accusatory tone that I and the reader may find off-putting. By maintaining that voice, you essentially alienate your audience, which is never great. I'd be happy to work with you so that your poem can empathize with others but still have that unique message. Just PM me! :D**

Keep writing (and sorry for the short/harsh review :P),

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to review. I seriously appreciate the constructive criticism. I think, after writing this poem, I discovered I shouldn't post things late at night or in a wave of frustration. I miss things I usually revise out haha. I'm going to take this to a PM because I have some questions I would like your thoughts on. Thanks again! :)

Hello Jadefox, Wonderwoman here. I wonder what this poems purpose is. I didn't think it was funny and I cant say I liked. I don't have criticism for this but I am wondering what does this mean?:

But, oh, I forgot, you can't see for crap.

? Maybe you meant: But, oh, I forgot you can't see crap.
I don't know. I don't think it was very clever. I don't see any reason for it being posted. But did you mean for the reader to get something out of this? Then put it in the poem. Anyways, keep writing and NEVER get discouraged!

What bothers me about this poem is, its category. Come on man, "humour" is gentle, it gives a joie de vivre to readers and a comforting and enjoyable take on life in general. I agree, humor can be sharp and blunt, but that's a satire.

Sorry for being so technical here. But as a fellow author I'd advice you that venting poems, particularly as accusatory as this, don't go of well with readers. This almost felt as a direct accusation to everyone out there who reviews works. To be honest, many of my poems have been misread by over critical readers, but I appreciate the fact that they atleast tried to comprehend my metaphors!

I agree with previous reviewers here, you can convey the same message with a lot of grace and compassion instead of accusing people. Trust me, it works much better that way!

Okay ouch . I enjoyed a lot of this and a bit I didn't . Kat here for reviewing .

Okay so like previous comments this was pretty harsh and sharp and I like to take apart people's poems and analyze and yeah a lot of the time I guess I don't look deep enough but then again no one can ever truly know what the author feels and that's just how writing is . It's the authors attempt and expressing feelin to the readers . The middle stanza in particular kit seemed really slapped togather out of anger and that both helps and hurts you here because it adds to the sting of what you are saying but don't write so angrily that it looses its poetic flare . Usually I like irony but you totally contradict the whole poem in the last stanza , why ? I guess it's supposed to add to the sharpness ?

Things I did like we're your flow through most of the poem and the repetition and slight rhyme . They all helped you very much here when you had so much going on . You definatley got my emotions , I'm just not sure if thy are good . You accurately conveyed what you were going for though .

Hey speakerskat, thanks for the review! I agree with you about the middle stanza. You're right when you say this poem was written out of frustration/anger with readers. Personally, I'm pleased it came across as I meant it. That must sound annoying, but truthfully, the way it appears "slapped together" is the way I desired to convey my feelings to the reader. I will say, as I wrote this piece, I was concerned about going over the top with it in a cliche-sort of way. Anyway, I desperately appreciate the review! Good criticism! Thank you and I hope to see you 'round :)

Hello, Jadefox.

To be honest, I don't know if I like this. It's awfully accusatory, and I haven't done anything wrong. That's the thing about second person. You can accuse everyone and no one at the same time.

The overall tone of the poem is what's most off-putting. I understand that this might be written out of anger, or "just for fun," but I think there is a more elegant way to look at this subject.

When it comes to interpreting poetry, both the reader and the poet have a responsibility. The reader must look at the symbolism and decide how it fits together, but the poet must leave clues for the reader to point them in the right direction. Otherwise, how would anyone know anything about your poem? If it's all symbolism and no concrete, there is no way for the reader to start to interpret the poem. Context is needed in every poem, even just a clue.

So really, the poet has a more delicate and important duty than the reader. Maybe you should try to reflect this in the poem. Instead of allowing this to become the abrasive rant that it is, show how much work the poet puts into the poem and then ask the reader to understand instead of calling them blind.

I hope that this review proves useful to you. Happy YWSing!

I felt accused when I read this poem too. And this time I wasn't even reading it too deeply at all. Anyways I agree with everything that Morrigan said. Feel free to take her advice to heart.

I personally liked her review more then your work JadeFox.

Jadefox replied · Jun 2, 2015

@Morrigan, I definitely do agree with your advice. I did write this with a combined frustration for my own poetry skills and a number of "surface" reviews I had received. I think the hardest part of poetry is knowing how many clues to leave your readers. As I said when I replied speakerskat, I am pleased how strongly you all feel about my tone. The way you perceived it was the way I hoped it would be perceived if you did not entirely connect with what was being said. Thank you for the good criticism! I hope to see you 'round :)

Hey JadeFox! Nice poem!

CaptainSalty here with a review!

I did enjoy this. There are just a couple tweaks needed though.

No, obviously you can't; you're blind.

I would take out the semi-colon and replace it with a comma.

that's dressing on the cake gifted to me.

I would add a comma after cake. It will look and sound better.

I only share 'cause I can't eat it all.

I would put "because" instead of 'cause.

that's what you, the reader, get.

I would put "you get" instead of just plain "get."

But, oh, I forgot, you can't see for crap.

Never start a sentence with the word "but." Use "yet."

No hidden meaning---it's just for fun.

Take out the hyphens and replace that with a comma and replace the period with an exclamation mark to add emphasis.

That's all for this review! This was an interesting poem and I did enjoy it. I want to see more of your poems. Don't give up and always write, JadeFox!

Hello, Review day is over but I finally found time to review some work.

I'll be honesty I am blown away by your poetry. This literally describes how every writer feels when a reader just instinctively share their opinion without thinking about what the writer is trying to tell you. I feel as though you received some opinions on your writings and none of them matches your train of thought.

That's it from me. I really liked this poem because I'm an amateur writer and this has happened to me as well for some people.

Jadefox replied · Jun 1, 2015

Thanks for the positive feedback! And yes, this was inspired from exasperation from readers taking things as they are presented and not reading far enough into what's actually being said. Thanks again and let me know if there's anything I can do for you!
