In A Janitor's Adventure

The only window in the entire craft was a tiny porthole in the door, which really didn’t provide the lounging opportunities of Ennet and Grescin’s. Janny glared at Lestili the Endoleon. This was an Endoleon craft, with screens on the wall emitting only the slightest amount of light. Janny had complained at first but finally sat on a little fold-up chair that had been stored under a trapdoor in front of the console. But he barely bothered to look up at the navigation display. Instead, he stared at his shoes and the black trousers that weren’t his.

“I just want to go home,” Janny mumbled. He sighed and looked up. Lestili was beside him on the right. He looked round and said, “Please, just take me home.”

Lestili’s hands tensed around her rectangular steering wheel. Janny shuddered, remembering his panic as they had taken over his ability to walk.

“I would love for you to go home. I would love for you to stay there and stop hijacking twenty per cent of Endoleon shipments,” Lestili replied. “Do you have any idea how many companies’ profits have collapsed? How many workers - like the janitor you claim to be - have had to be laid off? And without workers, how can you expect any long term growth?”

Janny blinked at her. His heart twinged as he remembered the clacking sound Odela’s eyelids made when she blinked.

“I don’t understand what you said,” Janny said.

“Of course you don’t. You Scentians just barge in doing what you want and leave TIPO to clean up the mess,” Lestili muttered. She had barely turned around to face him but the way she stared at the screen above them made Janny think the conversation was meant to be over.

But something had occurred to him. “So… er… speaking of TIPO… Don’t you usually work in groups?”

Lestili was silent for a moment. “Yes… Our ships are built for stealth, not one-on-one chases… as you and your friends learned when you outran me. But sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands.”

Janny watched her, waiting for an explanation. When none came he said, “I’ve never taken matters into my own hands.”

Lestili didn’t say anything. With a sigh, Janny settled in to watch the navigation screen, the closest he could get to looking out a window.

“What’s that?” he asked eventually, pointing to a grey square out the beginning to come into view on the left of the screen.

“It’s a trading area,” Lestili explained, slowing down as they neared it. “You can’t enter without declaring what you have to barter, then there’s a huge fine if you’re lying about your cargo.”

Janny frowned, but didn’t say anything. He wondered what would happen if she incorrectly declared him as a Scentian. Would she get kicked out? Lose so much money that she couldn’t afford the fuel to take him home? Would he be confiscated from her and sent home that way? Janny put every ounce of strength he had into keeping his lips shut and not mumbling any of his theories out loud. Ironically, he thought, pressing the words inwards with all the weight of his mind, you might get out of this if she thinks you are a Scentian.

“You alright there?” Lestili asked. “You look like your stomach is upset or something.”

“Just… nervous,” Janny said, looking at the screen rather than at her.

“Ah,” she said, I do wonder what the SRA punishments are for getting your self captured.”

“Yeah,” Janny said.

When they came to a stop, a robotic voice plagued by static played from all sides within the ship. “Please declare cargo.”

“One Scentian male for trade with any SRA unit. You claimed to have one within your bounds when I contacted. Has this situation remained the same?” Lestili asked.

“No,” the robot replied, “Cargo accepted.”

Belatedly, Janny felt a twinge in his gut at the thought of being handed back to the SRA. The ship on that news report had been much larger than Ennet and Grescin’s. He chewed on his bottom lip as they picked back up to speed and headed for the far left corner of the grey square on screen.

When they reached their destination, the robot said, “Please await approach of SRA unit Six.”

Janny’s throat went a little dry. That was definitely going to be more than two SRA flyers eating baked beans out of plastic bowls because they spent all their money on a fancy radar-hiding device. As they waited, Lestili started to drum her fingers on the console, constantly shifting in her chair. As a big white dot started to approach the corner of the screen, a massive grin on her face got wider and wider.

“They’re going to give me so much…” she murmured, and Janny wondered if she had intended to speak out loud.

Finally, the map display on the screen above disappeared, replaced with a slightly unflattering angle of a brownish-red Scentian. Janny blinked hard to try to refocus - his eyes having been aimed towards the exact few pixels on the screen that had resolved as the Scentian’s nostrils.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

I think I might take a small break after this.

First Impression: Okay...soo...we are approaching a trading post now. Should be a very interesting transaction. Also the money at the end there presents another interesting point.

Anyway let's get right to it,

The only window in the entire craft was a tiny porthole in the door, which really didn’t provide the lounging opportunities of Ennet and Grescin’s. Janny glared at Lestili the Endoleon. This was an Endoleon craft, with screens on the wall emitting only the slightest amount of light. Janny had complained at first but finally sat on a little fold-up chair that had been stored under a trapdoor in front of the console. But he barely bothered to look up at the navigation display. Instead, he stared at his shoes and the black trousers that weren’t his.

Nice little description to start things off here.

She is really convinced here. Doesn't she even have a tiny bit of doubt that maybe this man has a point? If it is really that bad in terms of the fine and this person hasn't changed his story one bit, she should have enough reasonable doubt to try to confirm this in some way before making a huge potential blunder.

Lestili was silent for a moment. “Yes… Our ships are built for stealth, not one-on-one chases… as you and your friends learned when you outran me. But sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands.”

Okay...continuity there with the whole stealth mode thing.

Okay very interesting route that he decided to take there. But he logic does make sense I guess.

That was a nice way to build the tension there.

Finally, the map display on the screen above disappeared, replaced with a slightly unflattering angle of a brownish-red Scentian. Janny blinked hard to try to refocus - his eyes having been aimed towards the exact few pixels on the screen that had resolved as the Scentian’s nostrils.

Nice little tease of an ending there.

Aand that's it for this one.

Overall: Looks like we are headed for the main climax. Considering that we have probably passed the halfway point by now I think that's the case. And we got a hint at some more of Lesli's motivations or perhaps the money is her only motivation and she made the rest up. Well this should be an interesting encounter to read about.

As always remember to take what you think was helpful and forget the rest.

Stay Safe

Hey there Bisc. I meant to start reviewing this before, but no time like the present. Obviously I haven't read any of the previous segments so just bear with me in this process.

The window seems like a very particular detail to give out, but it certainly drew me into the beginning of the chapter. I did pick this straight out of the green room and I do have my system for things that I review out of the green room. And the detail about the trousers not being his own is also another particular detail that kept my interest. I'm appreciating your small details throughout the chapter.

I presume that there's something about the Endoleon species that means they don't like/they can't take light. The few details I learn about the Endoleon in this first paragraph create an obvious distance between Janny and the Endoleon they're traveling with. I'm trying to remember the bit that I read before and I'm guessing that Janny is the main character. Or if there's multiple main characters and points of view, Janny still seems to be the focus.

With this focus on Janny, we find out details that were probably given in previous chapters. Somehow Lestili has captured Janny, the person who is lying about their species or their job or both. A lot of different levels of deceit are going on in this chapter, which spurs me on to read more of this story. And it interests me enough to think about going back to read the rest of this from the beginning.

Melli went through and gave you a lot of nitpicks, but I think that's just about all I have for now. I'll be back soon for the next chapter and whatever follows.
- Jack

Ohhh yeah I forgot Endoleons were vulnerable to light! That is mentioned in previous chapters but this was my entry for the summer novella challenge so it's been a while since I actually saw most of this xD

Thanks for the review :D

Hey Bisc!

Janny glared at Lestili the Endoleon.

There seems a strange emphasis on repeating that she's an Endoleon? It seems like it's brought up almost every time she's mentioned and it just seems... odd to me? It was noticeable, anyway.

Instead, he stared at his shoes and black trousers that weren't his.

I would change this to "the shoes and black trousers he wore" so it flows better into "that weren't his"? Since you write "his" and then you write "except they're not" so... it kind of contradicts itself.

He sighed and looked up. Lestili was beside him on the right. He looked round and said,

This gets kind of repetitive with the "looked"? I'd remove one of them, but I don't think it matters which one.

I am,,, also just realising,,, I should have gone back to the beginning before reading more,,,,

I will finish this one and then return to the beginning! haha sorry about that I kinda,,, forgot that I wasn't caught up

Just as a side note, it hasn't bothered me yet, but you might want to watch your use of ellipses! They are meant to be as a special emphasis after all, and overuse ends up hurting your writing at times rather than helping. Like I said, it's not too bad right now, but you might want to go through and see which ones you think you may not need.

Lestili was silent for a moment.

Instead of telling us that she was silent for a moment, maybe describe something she does that works as a natural pause? Then you're showing how she hesitates in responding, rather than padding it to tell that she is.

He wondered what would happen if she incorrectly declared him as a Scentian.

ooooo

pressing the words inwards with all the weight of his mind, you might get out of this if she thinks you are a Scentian.

Since these are Janny's thoughts, I would have assumed they would be in first person? Unless he's referring to something else? I'm a little confused by this sentence. The "weight of his mind" is what tripped me up, so I'm not... sure what you meant by this.

“You alright there?” Lestili asked. “You look like your stomach is upset or something.”

Is there any reason she keeps asking him this? She's asked twice (by my count) if he's all right, but she's... capturing him?? I'm not sure what her end goal is here, but she's not very friendly to him (she's not mean, but she still kidnapped him).

That was definitely going to be more than two SRA flyers eating baked beans out of plastic bowls because they spent all their money on a fancy radar-hiding device.

This doesn't really... fit into the sequence of events here? It's also worded in a way that I'm confused by. Again, I don't really know what you were going for here.

Well! This is quite the pickle. I'm intrigued what's going to happen next! I am,,, going to go back to the beginning first though and catch up before I go onto the next section.

I don't have a lot to say about this chapter? Not much was happening, and it was a little slower paced. I think, even with Janny's submission and not wanting to fight back, that the stakes of his return to somewhere he doesn't want to be could be heightened? The stakes still feel very low to me. I have some grip on the plot, but I'm afraid of suggesting anything right now because I don't have a firm grasp just yet. I'll try to rectify this once I've read more! It really just might be my oversight in not having read earlier chapters.

One other thing! I would have liked a little more description? I know you used comparisons that I'll understand later, but otherwise it's pretty sparse? It could honestly be me missing things that I shouldn't be missing, but I'm having a really hard time envisioning Janny's surroundings and what he's seeing.

Otherwise, another good chapter! :D Hopefully once I catch up I will be,, ,less ignorant,,, alskjdiw

I hope you're having a wonderful day, and Happy RevMo!
