My name is Lance; Lance Starfinder. I’m a twenty year old, six foot tall, average guy. Oh yes and I’m in jail. Why you ask? Well I was driving on a rainy night and suddenly some nutjob cut in front of me and I slammed into his car with my massive truck. Since he had a small little car, I totaled it and ran over him. I panicked and sped off. Obliviously, the police caught up to me, and now I’m in jail for murder and a hit and run.
So as I was sitting in the cold, damp, jail I heard thought I heard the sound of screaming. I went up to the door and listened closely. Suddenly a awful shriek pierced the quiet, and then the sound of swords clashing followed soon after. I backed up to the side of my cage and sat there for about an hour.
As I was sitting there in the dark, the sound of footsteps slowly got closer, stopping at every cell. After what seemed like hours, a man appeared in front of my cell. He looked at me and came in to the room. And then, I panicked. I screamed my head off and tried to hide in the corner of the room. Now you are probably wondering why I was so scared. Well I was so freaked out because the man walked into the room…without a key…without any way in… he walked through the bars! And the bars were still intact! He just turned into a ghost or something!
The man jumped at me and put his hand over my mouth. “keep quiet, and I won’t kill you. Understand?” “Yes” I replied in a small voice. “ok good. Now since you are the only one left alive in this horrid place I have to assume you are the person I am looking for. What is your name?” “The names Lance” I said. “all right Lance, I am going to tell you something beyond your wildest dreams. You may not believe me because it seems so far-fetched, but here it is. You’re a magi lance.”
I looked at him like he was a complete nutjob. “Me? A mage? I think you have the wrong guy. I’m just a normal guy in prison for a hit and run. Besides, mages aren’t real. They are just stories made up by book writers.” The man looked at me. He chuckled. “They are just stories huh? Then tell me, how did I walk through those bars?” I paled. Then suddenly the truth hit me, and the world started swimming. Seconds later, I toppled to the floor, out cold.
I woke up to the man looking at my face in worry. I sat up. He looked at me. “Are you okay kiddo? I know it’s hard to believe, but there are thousands of other people just like you! I know this is all hard to take in though. Here Take this card. It’s the Magi academies address. You have 2 days to decide what you want to do with your life.” Then he touched me and the world spun around. When I opened my eyes again I was standing in an apartment. First things first, I went down to the front desk to see where I was.
As I walked down to the front desk, I looked at the card. On the top it said magi rank 7, name: harvester stars: 6. Stars? What did that mean? So I went down to the street and looked around. I saw a TV shop near so I went in. I watched the tvs until they said where I was. After half an hour of waiting, I finally got what I wanted. “San Diego morning time news” said the nasally announcer. So I’m in San Diego huh? I looked at the card again, tucked it in my pocket and went back to my apartment.
While I was walking back to my apartment, I sat down on a bench next to a massive tree. I looked at the card again. The address was lenen street between the ice cream shop and the TV shop, right at the base of the big tree. I looked around. The ice cream shop was on my left and the tv shop was to my right. I turned around. Behind me was a massive tree. I marked the place mentally, thinking I might need it if I had to run. Then I walked into my apartment, to get some much needed rest after this long day.
As I was walking to my bedroom, I heard growling and scratching at my door. I paled; that didn’t sound human. I started walking to my room faster. My door flew in. there was screaming, I’m not sure who; I think it was me though. I sprinted as fast as I could into my bedroom and locked the door. I then flipped my bed upright and hid behind it. Then there was pounding on my bedroom door, slow and rythmatic, like the person, or thing behind it had all the time in the world.
Then my bedroom door flew open and all hell broke loose. I screamed for help there was a flash of light. Then a small dragon appeared. It had short, curled horns on its head, with dark gold scales and red eyes. The monsters seemed to freeze. Then I looked more closely. They actually DID freeze. The monsters seemed to be frozen in time.
I looked at the dragon. “Are you another monster?” I asked? The question was supposed to be to myself but the dragon responded “no” “you called for help and I came.” “I am your familiar.” Then what was happening to me started to sink in. I was trapped in a small room with a dragon the size of my arm, 3 monsters that want my blood and I am apparently a mage. I started to hyperventilate. I was scared out of my pants. Trying to lighten the situation for myself I started joking around. I remembered reading in one of my story books ,when I was a kid, that wizards would often rhyme for spells. So as a joke I tried one. “Lightning hear my cry! Make these dumb monsters die!” I wiggled my fingers and lightning shot out of them and roasted one of the monsters. I screamed! “What Is going on here???” now I rhyme out spells? This is a complete joke! Suddenly, harvester teleported into the room with a worried look. He looked around saw the monsters and turned them to dust with one quick spell. I looked at him blankly. Then I passed out; For the second time that day. I was woken up quite quickly, because when I fainted I was standing so I smacked my head on the floor. I looked around and saw the dragon. It looked at me and said in my head “call me when you need me and I will come”. Then it disappeared. I saw harvester standing near me. I looked him in the eye and said “you got me. Count me in.” “Great!” harvester crowed. “When do I begin?” harvester looked at me funny. “Now of course! Now come with me”
When Harvester walked into a tree, I wasn’t even surprised. So much had gone on in the past day nothing could surprise me anymore. I just followed him in. when we got in the tree, it actually was the size of a normal room. Except it had lots of paths leading out of it. I followed him down one of them. He took me to a room and said “this is the test room. It tells me your potential as a mage.” He then left and locked the door. I sat there for about a minute when suddenly a cold wind started whipping around me. A ghastly face appeared in front of me and looked me in the eye. I jumped back. It stared at me for a bit and disappeared. Suddenly there was an excruciating pain in my back and I collapsed.
When I came to, I saw harvester standing near me…again. He looked at me and said “well? How did it go?” “Horrible” “that’s about right” he said “so how many bronzies did you get?” “What are bronzies” I asked. He looked confused. Well, they are what we call the bronze stars that appear on your back after your testing. How many did you get?” “oh” I answered. “I got none. He looked horrified. “What? I was sure you had potential! I checked it twice myself!” I though back to when I used a spell to blast that monster, but all I said was, “well, I don’t have bronze stars, but I do have these black ones” I said. He looked surprised. “Black ones? You’re just full of surprises aren’t you?” “what’s special with black ones”? I asked “well, black stars usually don’t appear until you test for journeyman mage.” He said. Suddenly he paled. “Stay here!” he shouted, and ran out of the room. He returned about 3 minutes later panting. “Lance… you never told me your last name. Could it possibly be starfinder?” he asked “how in the world did you know?” I cried! He got even paler, if that’s even possible. He looked at me and said “you are part of an ancient prophecy. You must tell nobody about this. Understand?” “okay” I replied. “Now head off to your dorm and meet your roomies.” I Know this wasnt written too well. this is my first book, and it slowly gets better. i would appreciate any help that i can get on expanding, and the spelling/capitalization or any other problems you might see. Thanks!-Andy

RoyalHighness is FINALLY here to review!
Wow, so you went through my entire book before I could even get one review on one chapter of yours, so needless to say I have some catching up to do!
Alright, let's get started.

A very, VERY Important Nitpick:
You have to make a new paragraph whenever someone starts speaking.
I can't read a solid paragraph of people just talking; you have to split it up.
So, for example:

"Oh, no!" cried Osama Bin Laden.
"Oh, yeah!" shouted a Navy Seal.

Every time the dialogue changes, you have to make a new paragraph. Or else you give your readers a headache and you can clear up some confusion as to who is talking.
That's the other thing: you have to add dialogue attributions (my favorites: "I said," "he said," and "she said.") Otherwise, we have no idea who's talking.
And one last thing: you have to capitalize the first word in dialogue and you have to put commas inside the quotation marks before the dialogue attributions. Example:
"I promise to make a real change," said Mr. Obama.
"Liar," muttered a Republican.

or
[quote]The
Like so.
These are really important formatting issues, and maybe you didn't format it on purpose, like Cormac McCarthy didn't use quotation marks, but either way it's just a suggestion :)

You have a few apostrophes missing, a few spelling errors, and you really need some general fixing up.
You need to break up some of your paragraphs of description, too. Just a thought :)
Honestly, this was difficult to read because of the erratic style, but I think it'll grow on me :D
Also, you have a name (Harvester?) that needs to be capitalized in a bunch of places. And the diction is kind of... cheesy. That's probably what you were going for, but it's not particularly believable.
The characters are a bit two-dimensional (except for Lance, I quite like him!) but I'm sure that'll change with the next chapters.
On to content!

Content
Contrary to some other reviewers, I like fast-paced. I like keeping the action going, as long as you flesh out the details later.
I like the whole crazy fantasy thing. It reminds me of Pulp Fiction novels. I'm a big fan of mythological creatures, so kudos to the dragons and the monsters. You might want to consider clearing up which is which, though.
Like barefoot runner said, you have a lot of disconnected concepts that need to be threaded together. Perhaps it'll come together when the plot thickens, but just a reminder, we're not mind-readers, we're book-readers, so don't assume we inherently know what's going on!
So far, I like the concept of mages and prophecies and all that mess! :) While it's a bit overdone, cliched and, like I said, cheesy, I'm pretty sure that's what you're going for. If it is, great! If it isn't, you've got some work to do, my friend.
I like the story, so keep me tagged for updates!
**Keep Writing!**

:) Thanks for the review! As I've said, this is actually the first book that I ever wrote, so it has a few problems like you've stated. My newer ones (like A War With No End) Don't have most of those. :P

Well, shoot, what do you need me braying on about the importance of formatting? >.< I feel dumb now. You already know basically all of that review :) I'm going to hop over to A War With No End and actually write a coherent and non-idioitc review :P

bah, you're not idiotic. And I'll still have spelling errors in A War With No End, i haven't edited it yet

Hi there! barefootrunner here to review your piece :) Welcome to YWS!

Spelling and grammar:
Okay, you need some work here. You need to look up direct speech especially. Not too many spelling errors, more grammatical and style errors really. But don't worry about it now! I want you to finish this gorgeous story first before you get to grammar editing.

Logic:
You have some errors here, like suddenly bringing in monsters and dragons at the same time without perfectly distinguishing between the two for a while. How did Lance immediately know there were swords clashing just by sound in the prison? And as it is modern time, there shouldn't be swords, should there? You also suddenly call the strange mage 'harvester' before making readers aware of the term. You have a few disjointed concepts and actions without much connectivity between them, but they are all easy problems to fix :)

Plot:
Man, you got it cooking! You got a hot storyline going here and no mistake! Perhaps it is a little fast, but then you would just need to fill everything out with a little description and stagnancy.

Language:
You had basically only action scenes and a little dialogue. We need something more. We need descriptions. We need to see things through your characters' eyes.

Characters:
Right from the start, you gave this guy a bit of background. But you didn't really flesh it out much, except that he is scared and confused, doesn't really make many decisions and faints a lot. Seems slightly pathetic, but I think he'll develop a little through the story. Just try not to move plot along at the cost of character development!

Overall, a fun piece of work that pulls you along through it. If you need help with the grammar aspects, feel free to PM me and I'll happily mentor you :)

I agree with everyone here when they say to slow down a bit. One of the other things that really irked me was the fact that you didn't split your dialogue up. You really need to, if you leave it like this, its choppy and fast, and you can never really tell who it is that's talking. I really liked the story line, or the concept, but you need to slow down and add more description and more inner turmoil for this confused guy. And it was weird because my dads name is lance, so I just kept picturing my dad as the character, because you never really took the time to describe what your character looks like. Other than the fact that he is a male, of course.

thanks! I will work on that as soon as possible. by split my dialogue up, do you mean that I should add words between? or put in more "Lance said" like stuff? thanks

A very good story indeed, but you moved it too fast, you need to take your time to explain his surroundings...like how everyone in the prison died etc... Also you really need to proof read, there is a lot and a lot of minor mistakes.
"-went back to my apartment. While I was walking back to my apartment, I sat down on a bench next to a massive tree"- here I would suggest you change the first part where you say 'I went back to my apartment'- to maybe I started making my back to my apartment, as right after you said you sat down where as beforehand you had already gone to your apartment. But I know that the story is fictional and whatever...but it is extremely important to keep it real! Feelings and surrounding really need to be expressed. and after the jail experience you would have thought that that guy would be in extreme shock, but he kinds of takes it around....not calling the police but going outside and not talking to any one to find out where he is but watching tv!
But dude....if this story is developed it would be an amazing one....trust me.
cheers and keep writing lots and lots :)

Thanks! that rewiew was really helpful! I agree that it was rushed, as I get farther into the story, it slowly gets better. I will work on fixing this, as soon as possi ble though

Hey man, I think, especially for your first book, that is an awesome start. I find writing in the first person is the easiest way to define your voice and slowly perfect your style. Plus it is a helluva lot easier to describe things in first person terms. I thought the story was very fresh and first paragraph is definitely an attention grabber. It has a very fast opening with the character starting off behind bars for murder and a hit and run, then the wizard bailing him out. I think that you should keep the opening just as fast but then slow down the rest of the chapter. A lot of information, like the kid waking up in his apartment but still not knowing where he was, the three monsters, the dragon, the star, and the kid ultimately realizing he's some sort of prophet was all too choppy and hard to keep up with. It seemed like a lot of these elements were just added for convenience to keep the story moving. Which is fine, each element is creative and very deserving of the story but adding more detail will add richness to an already very unique first person tale.

I really like the main character and his perspective. I would like to see more inner turmoil...I mean he did accidentally kill a guy, a wizard bails him out of jail (he's not worried about going back), and now he has monsters threatening his life...it all seems a bit much for a twenty year old, haha. Just slow it down, think it out, how would you feel in his situation? If this chapter covers two days, make the reader feel like it's been two days. Since this is written in first person it should be easy for you to set a tone of time and really draw out a detailed fictional conquest to rival Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Anyways, looking for to keeping an eye on your progress!

Thanks! I have a few more parts, if you want I can send them to you, but I will wait a bit before I post another one on the literary section because it may discourage people from reading it. :D

No problem man. Keep it up. Edit. Edit. Edit. Don't get discouraged, if you write, and they read it, and they like it, they'll keep liking it and keep reading it. Good luck! If you don't mind, stop my portfolio anytime!
