‘What can you do?’
When you care
about somebody
no matter who
they might be,
you want to know
that they’re okay.
That they’re safe
and secure
and that they’re happy.
Of course, of course
there will be times in life,
when something suddenly goes wrong,
when something doesn’t go right.
Because nothing lasts forever,
especially when the past
keeps coming back into play.
But when something does happen,
where does that leave you?
What do you say?
Where are you at?
What if you feel like you can't do
a goddamned thing to make someone feel better.....
or what if you feel that you have no right to even try?
What about that?
What if?
What if?
You can tell them that you love them,
that they will always have you....
but that is so cliché it makes you sick,
it makes you feel like a fraud
through and through.
You might be too young to do anything,
of course, of course...
Or maybe you don’t feel anywhere
near important enough
to the person in question.
But no one likes feeling helpless
in any kind of situation.
Especially one like this.
So you keep trying,
even when all the anger,
the feelings of helplessness,
the frustration keeps on flowing
through your veins and it won't piss off.
Emotions not showing,
But won’t go away.
No matter how hard you try.
That's when you start to question yourself.
Who are you to them, really....
And the big question, why?
And what can you really do for them?
If you take away the phrases
that make you feel like you're trying too hard,
like flicking through pages
that make you feel like that person, the cliché?
Nothing, you can do nothing.
Because you feel so useless,
helpless, frustrated, angry,
hurt.
But you can't tell them that.
In case you make them feel bad.
In case you make it worse.
Until one day,
you might just explode
because you can't take it anymore.
And then the pain
in your veins becomes
even more unbearable
than it was before.

Thank you for the writing this. It really made my day.
I’d just like to drop by for a review, sharing my thoughts on this poem.
I like the feeling of it, but to me it didn’t really feel poetic. More like a story, or even a group of sentences slotted together to sound nice.
Also, the swearing seemed out of place. I know it was a high rated poem, but the concept of the poem didn’t, to me, include swearing. That’s why it just felt out of place.
I would recommend that you go through the poem and make the lines more poetic, for example making the lines shorter. I would also change the swearing, or even take it out completely.
Overall, I really liked the concept of the poem. Well done and I hope this helps.
Hello WritingPrincess, thanks for the review
I agree with what you said about the swearing, looking back on it... Thank you again.

Hi again, just to say the length of the lines in the poem have been edited and the most of the swearing removed. ABC123
I%u2019m glad you find my advice helpful.
Radrook here a once again to offer some suggestions.
Apologies if i offend. It isn’t my intention.
Please feel full free to cast aside all things you deem not helpful.
But if you do be sure its true by being extra careful.
That having been said:
Thanks for sharing this composition concerning the feeling helplessness during a moment when a loved one needs help. I like the way that the composition is conversational. As if the speaker is confiding this to me personally. Also I can feel the strong emotion that the writing is experiencing and his sense of deep frustration in not being able to be of assistance. Definitely a very intense read.
As a fellow human being who has undergone that identical experience, I can definitely empathize and share those sentiments and wish as fervently as he does that things were different. So it isn't from an aloof distance that I am considering the things being described but as one who knows personally the depths of bitter despair that such feelings can engender. After all, I watched my mother slowly succumb to Alzheimer's for almost three years until she could barely talk. It is called The Long Goodbye and helplessness is the main feeling involved for the one observing it.
However, since this is a request to examine a written composition, I will provide my feedback with the sole intention of helping. So my statements below should be understood within this context.
Suggestion
Perhaps “you” might not be the best choice. It might be understood to be assuming that everyone shares the writer’s sentiments and clearly not everyone does.
For example, the following statement isn’t accurate:
. . . . no one likes feeling helpless in any kind of situation.
There are people who are masochists who derive great satisfaction in feeling helpless.
Others enjoy the bondage type scenario during intimacy.
Also, not everyone feels like a fraud when promising to help others with the words you mention.
Punctuation
Of course......
[Of course . . . or Of course,]
Concerning the use of Elipses
https://www.writing-skills.com/five-ann ... e-ellipsis
[Five periods are never used. The max is four.]
Sentence fragments
[y]ou want to know that they are okay.
[t]hat they are safe and secure and happy.
[t]here will be times in life,
. . . . won't go away[] [n]o matter how hard you try.
. . . . becomes even more unbearable than it was before. [redundancy]
[. . . . becomes even more unbearable. ]
Very interesting read. Looking forward to reading more of your work.
Hi Radrook, thank you for your review, v helpful!
I will take what you have said into account.

This is beautiful. The raw emotion in it. I can hear your voice through the broken words. It doesn't sound super poetic, but that is what makes it so beautiful. It's not perfect, but that is what makes this raw and tragic. You bring up these emotions and, honestly I'm not sure what to call it, but it's uncomfortable. So thank you. I think it's important that as a society we are uncomfortable because that's how we grow. And I love what you wrote because it strikes a conversation. This is honestly beautiful. Hang in there. xx
Hello GrayButterfly, thank you for your thoughtful review.

This poem was written during one of those moments, you know? When you just need to get the words out onto paper. I know it's uncomfortable, but as you say, I think we all need to confront more of the things that make us feel uncomfortable in life, otherwise nothing will change.
Thank you also for your kind comment at the end, all is good
