18+ for mature themes

because you tear at my tissue
and saw at my sinew
and play my hearstrings like a violin

because my body's already failing
they say life is short but my life
is even shorter

because ive been told that flaws make the person
and my mind is as flawed as my body
so explore my viscera & vices
and ill explore yours

there's a spot on my lungs and a hole in my heart

TW: mentions of self harm and cancer

my doctor explains the xray to me.
look here, she says, pointing to a cavity between my ribs,
you'll see your first heartbreak.
and here, she circles, is the time
you first cut yourself. the incision, she says
was sloppy, full of emotion and longing.

but, oh~! the craftsmanship. a skill most honed
and weathered down to an edge so painful
only a master could attempt this.
and really, after so many years of hating myself,
how could i not have become so adept at it.

her voice becomes soft as she goes onto the next
abuse after abuse. the throat, sore from so many years
of calling out for help. the skull, split open
because it cracked against a wall too many times.

soon, she stopped talking alltogether, her hand
just tracing the lines of my scar tissue.
these hairline fractures are shattered glass
of a clouded mind, a fragile body, and a broken heart.

my body is a story only machines can read
full of between-the-lines stories of generations past
their trauma, their pain, their learnings, their mistakes.
i am the culmination of misfortune and blessings alike,
burdened with the weight of a script i did not write.
somehow, i bear it all with no cracks on my surface,
but if you look for too long, you'll find
there's a spot on my lungs and a hole in my heart.

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.
