Think I might be trying to follow along with the NaPo prompts this year (on napowrimo.net), as I'm inspired to anyway. The goal is a poem a day!

Past NaPo years:

Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Day 1: Becoming Michelangelo's Bleeding Statue

cw: transphobia, dysphoria, and kinda self-harm
Spoiler! :

After Robert Hass

I tell the doctor that my body is a series of tubes, that my skin is seared in gooseflesh, that my shoulders are too soft, my breasts, my belly, smooth and supple and doughy.

She says that she gets it, that we’re all a series of tubes, that it’s alright to be cold, that it’s natural everything is perfectly natural. She regards me as you would a rock of no particular note, not expecting it to look different from the way it is. But I am not a rock, I am a person. I can tell she does not quite believe me. She sees me, or rather she sees my soft shoulders, belly, and breasts, the curve of my hips, the monthly blood on my hands, the letter on my license. She sees these and says to them, “You are natural,” before I catch her gaze and her mouth tightens. She says there’s nothing wrong with me. Sorry, but there’s nothing she can do.

That night I dream that rather than tubes, I am made of marble. I dream that I have a knife that slides right through. I dream that in the morning, she awakens to find two stone breasts bleeding on the hood of her Lexus.
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Hello, Rook! I must say, I'm absolutely in love with the powerful imagery you've written. That ending? Amazing. It's a powerful form of gore that catches you off guard. Honestly, your writing style is fascinating, and I can't wait to see what else you have in store.

Day 4: How to write a poem

1. Google how to write a sonnet, and then go to RhymeZone.com to pick out some rhyming words.

2. Print out both web pages.

3. Shred them. Put the shreddings in a compost bin.

4. Eat fruit. Eat fruit until you’re sick. Put the rinds in the compost bin. Pocket the seeds.

5. Wait until you have rich, loamy dirt. Keep eating fruit if you must.

6. When the time is right, spread the dirt on a site of your choosing. Popular choices are the plot of your future grave, the childhood home of your rival’s ex-girlfriend, or an abandoned local courthouse.

7. Plant the seeds. All of them. See what grows.

8. Given enough time and care, you should eventually find yourself with a tree. Pray it brings forth fruit.

9. If it does, wait until the air thickens and you can feel sweat budding between your toes. Then you’ll know it’s ripe. Pick the fruit.

10. Split it down the center. Inside, you’ll find your poem.

11. If the tree bears no fruit, bitterly weep. Therin lies poetry.
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Day Five: Jack Comes to Town

Visiting from an illustrated storybook,
he's fresh from the beanstalk
or from killing Galligantus. I'm not sure.
His illustrator didn't draw backgrounds,
so I keep reminding him him
that those huge lumps in the distance
are not fallen giants
but rather mountains.

When it is dinnertime I reassure him
there are no bones in the bread.
He flat-out refuses the bacon
saying it's too fatty, yet he complains
that the milk is thin. I offer water
and his jaw drops when I open the tap.
He rubs his head then begins a telling
of his countless adventures.

He asks me about the last time
I feared for my life and I tell him
of the deer that lept in front of my car.
He looks somewhat put out.

After dinner, I offer him pie
and the look he gives me
could wither a blackbird.

At night he bemoans the loss
of his harp--customs bans magic items--
and I expose him to the wonders
of YouTube and Spotify. He likes math rock.

By morning he has gone and,
that little wretch,
has taken my speakers.
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Hey Rook! These are very enjoyable to read. :) Not sure if I've read a Glosa before, but that was pretty neat - and I love the questions the speaker reaches at the end, and how the poem builds from these seemingly simple images to this deep anxious wondering
Am I always
opening and closing doors?

Have I always rattled this hollowly?

Great imagery in the midst of what could be very abstract questions too!

And then I also really enjoyed the poem written in the form of a prompt; I thought that was very clever, fun to read, and had some great little poetry gems in there too. Looking forward to reading with you for the rest of the month! Good luck!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

Day 6: You Never Seem To Listen When I Tell You Who I Am (Acrostic)

You and me, thick as crunchy peanut butter,
Never could be separated. It used to
Seem like we shared the same skin as we ran
To the library or the park almost as one.
Listen, things change but we don’t have to.
When I came out to you,
I thought you’d understand, thought you’d
Tell me you loved me as before. Instead,
You said I was imagining things, delusional.
“Who were you for all those years?” You ask.
I have been me all along. I
Am still just like you, but you are not like me.
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Day 7: You can lead a wish to water but you can't make make beggars ride

they say you can lead a horse to water
but they're already made of water

horses are flow: I love that
their skulls take up space

their hooves are diamonds
in the same way sandpaper is

listen, I don't even like horses
but you'll find one behind my ribs

they say if wishes were horses
then beggars would ride

but wishes are horses and my house
is full of hoofbeats and broken windows

because, since I don't like horses,
no one ever taught me how to ride
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Day 8: Harlequin Sonnet

My heart lies in jesters, in fools and in clowns:
their antics and japery cure all my frowns.
They juggle and jest and joke while they mingle
in court with the king, their bells all a-jingle.
Their facepaint can hide all emotions within,
protecting their thoughts with a grimace or grin.
I wonder if sometimes those true feelings fester
and moulder behind the mask of a jester.
They offer their joy for all men to borrow,
but who cheers them up when they're full of sorrow?
It's hard to find joy from just a cold mirror,
so whenever I see them, I'll offer them cheer.
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Day 9: Late March Nonet

The snow is melting, leaving gray piles
surounded by vast swathes of mud.
Twelve months ago you left me
standing amid gold leaves–
not the worst place you
could have chosen.
Spring snow melts,
mud runs,
dries.
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Day 10: Simple Love Poem

I first met you in a bit of an odd place, a thrift store,
but I knew right away you were the one for me.
We spent the day together, driving around in my car,
and when the sun set, I took you home.
The next morning, you made breakfast for me
and now you make it for me every day.
I can always rely on you to make dinner too
especially when I'm too tired to make anything.
You're constant and stable, you never give up
on me, your words are simple and clear,
you never mystify me or lead me on.
I've never been more in love
with a toaster oven.
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Day 11: What has the moon ever done for me?

I mean other than the things she does for everyone.
Sure, I'm glad for the tides in the ocean,
for the nightlight of my ancestors
for lunar holidays and calendars.

But my city's landlocked and lit with lights
like so many stars to keep away the night.
I have devices that remember days on my behalf
so I never have to check moon charts or do moon math.

So what need do I have for the moon?
When, in my hateful, empty, tearing bedroom,
did she ever send a blessing on a beam?
When I wished for her to stay
forever pinned up in the sky
did she ever do aught but turn away and hide?

When I caught her reflection in a cup,
did she ever sweeten the water?
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!

Day 12: Patio Furniture in a Mid-April Cold Snap

sit in the outdoor seating area
of the only fast-food restaurant
in a single traffic signal town
after hours in the dark
always the neon lights always
the sound of water always
the trees the road the cars the wind
here no one knows you here
there are night birds here
is a little moth flying, dying,
at the window
Instead, he said, Brother! I know your hunger.
To this, the Wolf answered, Lo!
