“Oh, hi,” Emily smiled as she opened the door to her dorm. I tried to remain composed; I had embarrassed myself enough that day, so I selected my words carefully before I spoke.
“Hi Emily. I just came to apologise for my... erratic behaviour at lunch, I just felt I needed to...” I lost the words, as if I had overthought what I was saying. I tried again, gazing down at my feet, anything to avoid the eyes that watched me through the awkward silence. “I felt odd, something I don’t ever remember feeling, a- and it didn’t sit well with me. Don’t think I was put off by you,” I looked up and smiled slightly, “I was just being an idiot.” I laughed in relief, glad that I had got the thought off of my chest.
I looked into Emily’s eyes as I awaited her response.
Ugh, here comes that feeling again...
