Mercury: Lunch Hall

"So, tell me about yourself."

There was little to tell, but much of it I didn't feel safe in doing so. My life was unusual, to put it bluntly, and the way I was brought up was much too complex for even I to understand... at this time. I was sure that Emily would have a much better recollection of her own experiences, but I imagined that it was only fair to tell at least a bit of my own story. “Well, I was born in a large town in England, and I didn’t really have any parents, just grew up until I came here. Haven’t really had any friends, mostly because I hate feeling as if I have weaknesses, but I don’t trust people particularly easy.”

I scratched the back of my neck, unsure whether to continue or allow Emily to speak, however I think she interpreted the silence as a go ahead, which was understandable, and I quickly took a bite out of my battered haddock as she began to tell about herself.

He stops talking and goes into his head. I take it as he wants me to go ahead, so I do. "Well I was born in Wolverhampton, England. My father was one of those over protective fathers. He sent me to an all girls school so I would not be around the opposite gender." I say. "My mother passed away not to long ago. My dad has gone crazy trying to establish my career and give me the best life." I say/

"I'm sorry to hear that, your mother I mean" I said, but not fully comprehending the sense of bereavement that Emily may have felt; my path had never crossed that emotion, and it made sense to think that it would probably never have to either. "So your dad sent you here, hm? What kind of career are you interested in? I realise you have a particularly fond taste in music, but what kind of path are you thinking of- symphonies, rock bands... pop star?" I laughed.

"I do not know." I conclude. "No one has really asked me that before." I think for a second. "I really love to sing. I do not really know what style I would like to do."

"Really? Would you be able to give me an insight of your talent?" I smiled, eager to see what Emily was capable of.

She seemed to blush slightly, perhaps a bit of embarassment? I wasn't entirely sure, but yet this seemed to make her even more interesting; yet that may have been natural for a girl of that age- I didn't know much about the tendencies about the opposite gender, an obvious result of being concentrated into an predominantly male training facility.

"Well, are you gonna show me?" I smiled, trying to appear more comforting, again.

I can feel the blush on my face. No one has asked me that either. "I am." I say. I turn to face him and quickly think of a song.

"When will I see you again?
You left with no goodbye, not a single word was said
No final kiss to seal anything
I had no idea of the state we were in

I know I have a fickle heart and a bitterness
And a wandering eye and a heaviness in my head

But don't you remember? Don't you remember?
The reason you loved me before
Baby, please remember me once more" I sing. I end it there, because my mind is drawing a blank on what is next.

I was shocked at just how fantastic Emily's voice was. It was melodic, and impressive; something not many people could achieve in my mind. I cocked my head and huffed in humorous amazement. I blinked hard.

"You have the voice of an angel," I smiled, suddenly feeling as if I'd said something wrong. I felt the blood rush to my cheeks as they went red, but I turned my head to avoid Emily's gaze. Why did I feel like that? It wasn't normal for me to feel as if I'd said something wrong, it was always the other person taking it the wrong way. But it wasn't like that, I didn't think.

I was relieved when the bell rang, signalling the end of lunch and the start of another boring lesson. "S-sorry, I n-ne-need t-to go," I stuttered, my words racing each other across my lips. I shook my head in self-hatred; I was making myself look a fool.

I walked quickly away from the table, swing my bag over my shoulders and cursing myself. "You idiotic sack of turd: she's just a girl." But I think that was what had defeated me.

"You have the voice of an angle." He says. I smile and slightly blush. He turns away from me and we do not speak until the bell rings. "Sorry, I need to go." He says. He gets up and darts off. His words were all slurred together and it made me smile. I was a little bummed he left so quickly.

I spot Brianna and walk over to her. Alex and he are walking together and I love the smile on her face. "Well hello you two." I say.

"Hey." Brianna says.

"Hey." Alex says.

"Your going to science right?" I ask Brianna. She nods and so does Alex. "You are going to hate it. The teacher is old and grouchy." I say.

"Well the English class is okay." Brianna say.

"I do hope that class is not a bore." I say. "I will see you later." I say to them.

We say our goodbyes and depart. I walk to the English class and sit a row from the front. This is one of my honors class, so I hope it will be slightly interesting.

Mercury: Training Room

I launched in a swift right rook to the gelatine models cheek, following up with a more weighty left blow just below the sternum (which would seriously stumble a real person), and then finished off the combination with bringing my right arm in again, but entering with the elbow, knocking the target onto its side. It rolled comically onto its front.

I ran my fingers through my sweat drenched hair and sighed deeply; the feelings I had for Emily during break-time had subsided into confusion, which only led to the rage that conjured inside of me when there was something I could not comprehend about myself. Naturally I had retaliated on an inanimate object to make sure I didn't put myself into trouble, but also honing my hand-to-hand combat skills at the same time. Working in espionage was going to be a challenge, I was sure.

I picked the model back up and turned away, gazing into the mirror on the wall which held weights of all sizes. Brushed up on your technique with the elbow, but be sure not to underestimate the chance that your opponent may strike...

Was that love?

“Shut up. Just shut up.” I muttered to myself, trying to rid myself of the ridiculous thought. I’d known her for a day; I couldn't love her- the idea was stupid. Love was supposed to come after years of happy marriage... or was it? My completed segregated background had allowed me to become physically and mentally strong, yet there were many things that I didn't know, things considered to be common knowledge, yet I had no such thing.

I yelled a profanity and struck the model again: as hard as I could. The object shot backwards and rattled as the interior plastic frame vibrated, as the yellow gelatine shook and rippled. I grunted, exhausted, and decided to skip out on maths and go to my room. I thought that perhaps a book may distract me from the situation at hand.

I head to my room. I am so glad I have a free period. I plop down on a bed and go into my head. Mercury was great. He was not like most guys at all. He was different and I liked that. It felt weird feeling this way about someone I hardly knew. He probably does not feel the same was.

I lay my head back on my pillow and look at the ceiling. "What is there to like about me?" I say out loud. Not able to stay still, I get up and walk over to the mirror. I straighten my hair. I am not so glad I have free period, have nothing to do.

By no means were the beds here comfortable, but that may have just been my pedantism. It mattered me bit however; Stephen King had a habit of drawing me into his stories, and 'The Stand' was no different by any means. I had sunk my head into the novel like a bear in hibernation, not even lifting my gaze from the black, serif font when footsteps came suspiciously close to my door.

The laminated wood door squeaked open, and into the small room (that barely incorporated the need for personal space) stepped a tall, large man, with a narrow brow and a head of deep brown hair that was neatly combed over his scalp and onto his fringe.

"Mister Narkise, I presume?" He spoke with a loud voice that radiated authority.

"It says that on the door doesn't it?" I reply wittily, returning my gaze to my reading material after the few seconds I took to examine the man.

"You may have been sent here on special orders, young man, but I can assure you I shall not hesitate to punish any kind of disobedience or insolence demonstrated by any student. Do I make myself clear?"

"Sure," I replied complacently, dismissing the thought that this buffoon could even dare to challenge me.

Instead of taking offense, as I had intended, the man merely laughed and said "Then I'm glad we have an understanding."

His failure to be irritated by my arrogance annoyed me and it had seemed that he was merely trying to play the same game against me. This man truly had guts, because the headmaster was usually told everything about his students.

"I have a few questions for regarding this morning, Mercury, and as the Head I would like to invoke my right to here the entire truth- so think about what I might know before you answer; my punishment shall be swift."

I grunt, bored with everything. I have done everything that needs to be done. I have done homework, cleaned the room and practiced my music. I walk outside and notice how dark it have become. I walk around in the darkness with only the light of the moon and the light coming from the dorms.

In the mist of all of this, my mind some how lands on Mercury. I hate having a 'crush' on anyone. It makes me feel vunerable and weak. I cross my arms and sigh. Not knowing what is going on is killing me. I could go tell him right now. I could get it all off my chest, but I am too worried what he will think. I do not know why i care so much. It has never mattered to me what someone will say because people and I usually do not get along. I shake my head and keep on walking, trying to stop thinking so much.

I had told the headmaster what had happened with the kid that had attempted to assault me this morning, the flying table was briefly mentioned in the passing, but I honestly mentioned that I had no part in that. I had expected punishment for my actions undertaken to neutralise the assailant, but I received appraisal instead.
I certainly wasn't complaining, but it confused me greatly as to why it was considered acceptable to demonstrate harmful ability. I asked him to elaborate.

"This school isn't what you would call 'normal', we accept those with abilities not seen commonly in society, allowing those who possess them to learn how to control and use them efficiently and safely. You are already aware to your capabilities, you must simply hone them at work on your notorious attitude, Mr Narkise, I would hate for such talent to go to waste."

I studied him, still intrigued about his appraisal, but I suppose it made sense. I knew I didn't possess the kind of ability like the person who flipped the table earlier, but I had skills elsewhere.

The bell signalling the end of lesson time rang loud, making me jump from my train of thought, and the headmaster regarded me with stern eyes.
"I believe that is all we have to discuss Mercury. I have other matters to attend to."

"Of course." I watched him go out, biting my lip. I was truly amazed by just how my future in this place may turn out.

Speaking of which...

"Emily." I needed to apologise for my hasty and unexplained exit earlier in the lunch hall, I was sure I could find her room around the dorms somewhere.

Throwing my black jacket on and slotting my book back onto the bookshelf, I left my room and closed the door.

I opened my laptop and saw three new emails, all of them from my father. Emily I miss you very much. You better be good in school. Keep your grades up. Be nice to your teachers. My father and I had a very weird relationship. He does care for me very much, but he almost cares more about what I will do in life. I reply back to him and shut my laptop, sighing.

I get out one of the books we are reading in my english class and read ahead. I know that I should enjoy reading Charles Dickens, but I just do not. It is hard to keep my attention. I might as well get this over with. I begin to read, but thank God someone is knocking on my door. I jump off the bed and find Mercury behind the door. "Oh, hi." I say with a smile.
