"Me too." Phil sighed pulling her close. "Colt would die then."
"He really would wouldn't he?"
"He is only built for one girl." Phil shrugged. "Annie's it."
Colt:
"Hang in there." Colt said for the millionth time as Annie driffted into sleep.
"We need to do surgery, we have a little blood and hopefully your friend will get here and be a good candidate for blood donation." The doctor said tightly.
I felt the color drain from my face. "What else can we do?"
"As soon as we operate we'll be able to tell if she's got better chances."
"When can you operate?" I asked desperatly. Her breathing was shallow and her face was pale. She was both suffocatting and bleeding to death at the same time, and I was powerless to stop it. Hopelessness invaded me.
"We can operate whenever."
A sharp pang of anger hit me, "then why aren't you?"
"I came to ask you to leave so we could."
I didn't like leaving her but I knew if I was there I would be putting her in further danger, I stood up and nodded. I gave the man my cell number instructing him to call me the second she was stitched up, I needed fresh air and a walk but I would be within a stones throw away. As soon as I was out the hospital doors I called Phil to check on the update on their trip.
"We're just about to take off, I have to go they're closing the doors, I will call you the instant we land. Do you have a car?"
I nodded before the fact that he couldn't see me registered so I said, "yeah, I'll be there to pick you up as soon as you land. Call me before you even exit the plane."
Suddenly it was Senra on the line, "Don't bother with that we're going to call a rental company and have them deliver us a car while we're on the plane."
"On that note I let you go back to that."
I felt guity about asking Senra to do this, she had just had a baby, but she wouldnt do it if she honestly cared about Annie. The woman was now one of my favorite people in the world. With any luck, she would be the thing that would keep the reason for my existance alive. I would never forget how much I owed her if this worked.
Senra woke up when Phil shook her shoulders. "We're there and Cale's ready to eat. I couldn't find the bottles." Phil smiled. She yawned and nodded getting up and following him off the plane pulling a bottle from her bag and feeding it to Cale as they foudn their car and took off.
"What if this doesn't work?" Senra asked.
"It will, it has to." He replied softly. "I mean, come on, it has to work." He smiled and shrugged.
"How do you know?"
"I dont, but then again I do. Call it a gut feeling."
Senra shrugged, "Maybe your gut is bias." She smiled.
"Maybe, here we are." He parked and they ran in. She was then ushered to a room where they stuck needle after needle in her drawing blood.
"I think that is enough." She said her head feeling light.
"One more, hon." The nurse looked like she hadn't been a nurse long. She started drawing more blood and Senra fought against the darkness that threatened her. She heard the doctor come in.
"Please tell me you aren't getting all this blood at....." His voice stopped. "Quite drawing blood, you'll kill her!" Senra gave into the darkness.
THe nurse still didn't seem phased, she simply removed the needle and taped up the thing. "Nothing to worry about."
"WHat?!" I bellowed, "You took three bags!"
"You what?" An elderly nurse asked in astonishment. She walked over to me and took a survey of Senra. "She's not lost enough blood to die," she said. "At least not if we do something now."
"Sense she has O-negative blood we can give her any blood and her body will accept it. So we are going to use some B-positive, that way the other girl can still get the O-negative and she'll be fine too." The nurse smiled.
"She'll be ok, right?" He demanded glaring at the other nurse.
"Yes, typically we don't allow more then a bag and a half taken out at a time, usually there is a thirty minute break between them too." The nurse said glaring at the younger nurse. Phil frowned.
"Why'd you take so much?" He demanded the other nurse.
"She's fine, it's been proven that four bags can be safely removed." The nurse said.
"No it hasn't!" The older nurse growled. "You had no right, leave, I'll take care of her now. You could've just messed up us getting any more blood from her for her friend. I doubt she'll wnat to after this."
"Even if she wants to, I don't know if I"ll let her, she has a son to take care of." Phil replied.
"If she allows any more to be drawn I will be doing it and no one else. All rules and regulations will be followed to the dot." The nurse said trying to reassure him.
The blood transfer was simple enough, fill a sirenge and shove it into her veins. I didn't like having to poke her so many times but slowly the color returned to her face. I relaxed a bit.
Her eyes fluttered open, "what happened?"
I kissed her forehead, "you fainted."
"I'm not afraid of-"
"The nurse was foolish and took too much, you're fine now though," the elderly nurse said, "I don't think that other nurse will be keeping her job much longer, I'm going to have a look at her papers."
"She will, but you can't give any more until you get some rest and some fluids into you." The nurse said. "Come on, I'll get you to a more comfortable room."
"I'll carry her." Phil said scooping her up setting Cale in her arms. She didn't argue as she laid her head on his shoulder and sighed. "You ok?"
"Ya, just tired. I didn't know that sitting aroudn could be so exhausting." She smiled.
"They took a lot of blood, I'm not sure you should give more." He said softly.
They finally let me in to see Annie. She looked so helpless surrounded by the various tubes and machenary that they had hooked her up to. I didn't dare to to anything other than squeeze the hand that wasn't attached to the heart monitor.
"Why can't they take these out?" she complained.
"Because if you have another episode they'll know."
"If I have another epsoide I'll be in pain."
I kissed her hand. "Don't worry sweetie, Sen and Phil are here."
She blinked in surprise, "why?"
"You needed blood, she had some to spare."
Annie
I shot up as much as I could, "She did what?!"
"She donated blood."
"She's insane."
"She loves you."
"She damned well better, if she did that for anybody she didn't I'd have her hospitalized. I'd love to have her hospitalized now, she can't afford to give blood or risk herself in any way."
I snickered, "there's gratitude for ya."
"I'm grateful, but more annoyed that she would risk her life for mine."
"It wasn't that big of a risk in heinsight."
"See?"
Phil
I cuddled the still exausted Senra against my side in the waiting room. She should not be this tired. "I'm going to get you more orange juice okay?"
She made a face, "No more orange juice," she pleaded.
Senra waited until he brought her back a banana then he slowly started eating it cuddling closer to him again.
"I want to see Annie soon too." She smiled.
"Alright, I'll see waht I can do, btu I'm staying here until I know you are ok."
Colt:
"She's fine, just that stupid nurse."
"What happeneD?" Annie demanded.
"The nurse took to much blood and she passed out. She's fine now and ready to give more. Phil and the other nurses won't let her until she is all the way better. I agree. She wants to help you Annie, she thinks she owes you for when you took her in." Colt smiled softly. "Don't feel bad because we all love you so much."
I sighed, a slur of unpleasent emotions coming forth at me. Guilt was a major one. Colt seemed to reconize the self critizing look on my face and kissed my hand, "stop that." he ordered.
Annie sighed and shut up. "This was Senra's idea, so don't you go and blame yourself for anything." He grinned.
Senra:
Senra smiled, "Let's go see Annie." Senra smiled standing up. She felt all the way better. Phil wrapped a protective arm around her holding Cale in his other hand. When they walked into Annie's room she smiled. Colt jumped up and let her sit down. "How you feeling?" She asked smiling at Annie.
"I don't hurt too bad." Annie said. "You didn't have to do this."
"Yes I did, your the only family I have other hten Cale and Phil, I'm not letting you slip away because of some blood loss when I could help." She grinned.
