Slade woke slowly to Kathy's groaning." It hurts, it hurt. IT HURTS!" she said, in the end coming to a yell. Jordan jumped and Marlene started to stir.

"How far are we from Canada." Slade almost yelled at Jordan.

"Umm....i dont know, a few hours?"

"Pull over... im going to drive." said Slade with a fierce look in his eye. Jordan followed orders obediantly.

"Now," said Slade in the drivers seat," lets see what you can do." he hit the pedal to the floor, and they were flying past the scenery at lighting speed.

Kathy jolted when the car abruptly sped up. Never in her life had she ever felt so vunerable, weak, and filled with pain. She didn't like it.

Marlene held onto her seatbelt for dear life. She looked back at Kathy, who looked like she was in a lot of pain.

"Where are we suppoesd to find this cure anyway?" She asked Slade, who was too busy paying attention to the road.

She closed her eyes as Slade took a corner too sharply.

Kathy felt her life slipping away, but she desperatly clung to it, if she became a zombie NOW she'd end up killing somebody. The only thing she could do was cling to life and hope she could hold on long enough.

Next time they stopped-whenever that may be-she would stop herself from hurting anyone except herself. If their next stop didn't involve having found the cure, Kathy would make her own cure, a bullet in her brain.

"Oh my God!" Jordan exclaimed, bolting upright.

"What?" Marlene asked, turning around.

"There's a science place in Canada, only an hour or so from the border at the speed we're going now. They probably have the cure."

"How do you know?" Slade asked.

"I read about it," Jordan lied. He had more ties to this place than he was willing to admit; eventually these ties would help with the cure, but for now he needed to keep it to himself.

Marlene looked at Jordan curiously. "Where did you read that at?"

He shrugged. He was avoiding looking her in the eyes, she noticed. What was he hiding. "I can't remember," he said, "Some newspaper, I think."

"Well, it's worth a try," Marlene said.

"Do you know where this place is?" Slade asked him, who nodded. Marlene just glanced at him again, her eyes narrowing. "Okay, that's where we're headed then."

Kathy bit back a cry of pain as it over took her. She curled into a tiny ball hoping to contain it, and then once again the familiar blackness consumed her, she welcomed it, knowing she would bring numbness.

When she resurfaced, she wasn't in the car anymore, she was being cradled by Slade's strong arms, and they weren't moving anymore. She opened her eyes, "where are we?" she croaked.

"A science lab in Canada, Marlene and Jordan are trying to convice them to give you the cure. By the looks of things its not going to well." Slade set her down on a chair, "I'll be right back, maybe i'll be able to persuade them."

As soon as Slade walked away Kathy was pulling her gun out of its hoilster, she slipped a single bullet into the slot. It clicked louder than she wanted it to and Slade turned to look at her.

She had been found out.

Marlene turned the corner. What she saw stopped her. She looked back and forth between Slade and Kathy, who's eyes were wide. She noticed a gun in her hand, and walked up cautiously, confused.

"Um, what's going on?"

Jordan didn't worry about what was going on at the truck; he was pretty sure that Slade and Marlene could handle it. He had heard the gun, and that was enough for him.

"Look, just take me to Dr. Cabot; he'll help me."

"Who should we tell him is calling?"

"His son."

****************************************
Dr. Cabot was in his office, at the front of the science center. Jordan walked into the room, not bothering to knock.

"Jordan, is that you?"

"Yeah Dad, it's me."

"My God you've grown."

"Yup." Jordan had never been fond of his father; especially not after The Incedent.

"Why are you here, boy? I haven't heard from you in ages!"

"Well...I need the cure."

"The cure? You can't just have that!"

"One of my friends has the disease though...you've made the cure, why can't I use it?"

"It's not been tested!" this was a lie.

"Consider this a test then! If you don't give it to her, she'll most likely commit suicide! I won't let her do that!"

"Kathy," Slades voice was panicked, yet calm, not trying to startle her, "Kathy give me the gun."

Kathy shook her head, "this is the only way Slade, you know they won't give me the cure, and I know I'm about to die and become one of them any second."

"Kathy, please, you made me stay."

"No I didn't I-"

"You made me realize how much we needed each other, please Kathy. Stay."

Tears clouded Kathy's vision, "but if I don't, I'll kill you, all of you." She blinked her tears away and looked at them determidedly, "I can't won't let myself do that."

She closed her eyes and pulled the trigger. The gun discharged and the bullet peirced her scalp. Her body shut down and she fell back. The bullet missed her brain.

Jordan heard the gun go off. "Dammit Dad, choose your place! Are you really going to condemn an innocent to death? Is she just going to become the next mom for you?" Dr. Cabot shuddered.

"Your mother...was an eye-opener."

"You could have saved her. You had the cure in your hands, and you could've saved her. But you didn't."

"I should have, I know. It was a mistake."

"A mistake that should not be remade." Dr. Cabot knew his son was right. He handed Jordan the cure.

Marlene screamed, running toward Kathy as her body hit the ground. Blood was everywhere at this point. Slade was cradling her head in his hands, checking the wound.

"Kathy," Marlene whispered, her nerves flazzled and panic overtaking her. "Is she okay?"

She knew that once she asked that it was a stupid question. But Kathy couldn't be dead. She just... couldn't. Marlene couldn't let that happen.

"We've got to get her to a hospital," she said, just as Jordan appeared around the corner, his eye wide at the sight.

"No, we don't," Jordan replied, kneeling next to Marlene. "My dad's a doctor here. He can fix her head, and give her the cure."

"Are you sure?"

"yes."

"Your dad?" Marlene asid, though her voice came out shaky.

Jordan nodded, opening his mouth to explain, but Slade cut him off.

"We'll talk about this later."

Marlene bent down as they surrounded her, picking her up slowly. Her head fell to the side and her arms hung down limply. Marlene quickly checked her pulse, which was slow and weak, but better than nothing at all.

"Follow me," Jordan said, and they made their way toward one of the rooms. "Lay her down gently."

They all bent down, laying her on the bed, the blood staining the sheets instantly. Marlene starting tearing up, still in shock from what had happened. She wasn't quite sure what to think. She felt like couldn't think at all really.

"I'll get my dad," Jordan said quickly and ran out of the room.

"Dad, you have to help her."

"You know I'm lousy at this."

"You have to try!"

"I can't. Ask John."

"Where's he?"

"In his office," Dr. Cabot looked like he honestly watned to help. Jorden knew he wasn't as good at surgery as most doctors. Instead, Jordan found John, his father's best friend.

"John, I need your help!"

"Jordan, is that you? My god, I haven't seen you in ages."

"Yeah, that's great, but this isn't the time for a reunion. I have a friend with a bullet through her head."

"And she's still alive?"

"Yes. You can help her, can't you?"

"I can try." John followed Jordan back to the room where the others were.
