If, however, you have like an urgent message or something, depending on the teacher you can just ask to quickly answer it - or, better yet, warn the teacher beforehand that an urgent message might come up at some point during the class and you'll have to answer.

Ah, some teachers will hate it if you eat gum in class though, especially if you're not discreet about it.
