like father like daughter
once my favorite phrase
the sea floats in our eyes
unsure and unmoving
as we try to navigate.
they see what we surface,
do not understand
what we cannot.
our wills are anchored
cutting the surface floor
too heavy to raise.
never still, never calm
never fully at peace
never sure of what to do.
the storm is too strong,
currents fighting for direction
find a way to escape.
wishing we understood
like father like daughter.

Great poem. I can completely relate. The 2nd verse was exceptional, "once my favorite phrase". I loved how you used it. It was almost like a sucker punch, because in the beginning of the poem, I thought it was going to be another "lovey-dovey" poem about how much you love your dad. But instead, you hit me with a surprise.
I liked the way you used "the sea floats in our eyes, unsure and unmoving, as we try to navigate." These lines give the poem imagery. I instantly imagined an ocean, completely stilled by a shared opinion. And in a way, this shows how your dad has an impact on the way you see things. Almost as if, since you two have been living together so long, you share one another's perspectives.
I can kind of relate to this poem. Because I have a step-father who is amazing. He is always telling me what's best for my sake. He's more of a father than my real dad ever was. And when you say how you take up your father's way of perceiving life, it reminds me of how my step-father effects me. I see things through his opinion, and not my own.
Great imagery throughout your entire poem. Especially when you use the storm. It makes me think of how strong our parents' opinions are and how we can't always say our opinion. Because our opinion is not always unique. After all, isn't an opinion the way we see things? And if so, why do most of us see things through eyes that are not our own?
This poem is an inspiration to me. It gives me a great out look on how I look at things. It makes me question if I'm really looking at things the way I see them, or how my step-dad sees them?
AWESOME job!
Thank you so much for all the nice words! I'm so glad you could relate, and that you got so much from it. I'm also glad you appreciated the imagery- it's always something I'm trying to work on.
Oh yeah. No problem. It's great to hear from someone who shares the same point of view. Great poem!
Hi!
I loved your poem!!! It flowed flawlessly, you didn't need a rhyme scheme and the lines just melted together - it was great. I think it also helped that you didn't have separate verses.
I liked how the first 2 and last 2 lines are more "realistic" and the rest of the poem in between is more metaphorical with the sea, the anchor and the storm. This imagery was great, as it was all from the "sea" kind of theme and combined with the metaphorical sense, it made a really deep poem.
I'm not sure how many people can actually fully relate to this - however I definitely agree to an extent, and I can relate to it well.
I loved how you repeated "like father like daughter". That was so powerful and really drove in the point you were trying to make.
One thing though - I noticed that you didn't use any capitalisation? Was this for a reason? I think that it would maybe be better dramatically if you maybe started the poem with a capital or something.
Overall great poem - You did a great job!!!
I would love to read some more of your works...
Tick tock
Wow, thank you! My first critic, and it's so nice, you've really made my day. I didn't use capitalization because it's just what I've always really done, although I'm always looking for further dramatization so I'll definitely need to try that next time!
No problem! You deserved it - great work.
