Self-Portrait Poem

In Poetry

When friends charge to the streets,
I am the one who is grasped by walls.
As my hair slowly darkens at the roots.

I forfeit my eyes to the metal sedative on my desk.
It sneers at me as I stare back emptily.
I crush it with my fingers every day.

However, in my room
I am never solitary
I fight with Stabler, comfort others with Benson,
Sing of societies fiascos with Lupe,
and preach with the King.

My mind is just a sprightly child,
Yet my body is well water.
And this always made peculiar daydreams.

Hi there, reowine.

I like many of the images you use here. They're very vivid. You've got a knack for that.

There are a few things that confuse me, and that should be cleared up. It's okay for the reader not to understand every little thing, but most of the of them should be understood.

I fight with Stabler, comfort others with Benson,

I have no idea who these people are. I googled Stabler, and it came up with some guy from some crime TV show. I think it would serve you better to find a more famous representation to "fight with." And Benson is such a common name that google didn't find anything. I understand the other references to people (you sneaked in that third one very slyly), but these two aren't doing it for me.

I forfeit my eyes to the metal sedative on my desk.

I like how this line reads. I like it very much, actually. But I don't understand it. "metal sedative" throws me for a loop.

Don't put a period after the second line in the first stanza. It'll flow better.

It sneers at me as I stare back emptily.
I crush it with my fingers every day.

I don't like "emptily" or "every day" (though I do appreciate you leaving "every day" as two words, which is grammatically correct. Yay grammar). I think it would serve you better to say "It sneers at me as I stare back, empty." I also think that the poem would be better served if you could not crush it with your fingers. "I try to crush it, but my fingers fail." It adds a deeper sense of futility.

Put a period or a colon after the second line of the third stanza.

My mind is just a sprightly child,
Yet my body is well water.
And this always made peculiar daydreams.

I like this ending, though I think you could make it stronger. Try it this way:
My mind is a sprightly child;
my body is stagnant as well water.
This always made peculiar daydreams.

It scans a little better.

Altogether, I really like the way you use images in your piece. Nice job. I hope that this review was helpful. Happy poeting!

yay thank you! Oh by the way, stabler and benson are from law and order svu, its my favorite show and this was a poem for english. Soooo, I wanted to incorporate something meaningful to myself in, it even if others don't understand. Thank you for the review though I really appreciate it!

I don't know what to say, I didn't get the meaning of the poem.
The starting led me to believe it was about that you are alone in your house while your friends plays outside.
The most confusing is the last stanza which is really bleak in its meaning or it is to me.
Still I don't know what to say of your ability cause I'm still not clear about the poem.
Yet, keep up the good work.
