Introduction
Talia Thorne always felt like there was something odd about her, but that day in December at the doctor’s office confirmed it.
It was the day she smiled at a mirror and found herself to have sharp, pointy teeth of a monster, teeth that couldn’t be explained medically.
It was the day Talia learned that she was a demon in the skin of a girl.
Chapter One
“Talia Thorne?” Nurse Amy asked.
Talia turned her head towards the nurse, returning her expression back to normal. She couldn’t let Amy see her real teeth, she couldn’t let anyone see it.
Her Mom sighed and said:
“I think that we have to go now.”
“What? What do you mean?” Amy asked, her eyebrows furrowing.
Talia too didn’t know what her Mom meant, but nevertheless, she followed her out of the doctor’s office.
Chapter Two
Mom was driving Talia back home. They didn’t talk, they didn’t bring up what happened. But they couldn’t be quiet forever.
“Why are you taking back home? Why do I have sharp teeth?” Talia asked.
“I never intended for this to happen right now and so soon, but it’s happened. You’re a demon, just like me.” Mom said.
Chapter Three
Mom grinned, showing off her full set of sharp teeth, just like Talia’s.
“How did I not notice this before?!” Talia asked. In all the years of growing up, she had never seen her Mom have pearly whites such as those.
“I’ve gotten good at hiding it, as will you.” Mom said.
Chapter Four
“If you eat meat early in the morning, it should stay away.” Mom said.
“So what now?” Talia asked.
“We’re going to go home, that’s what. Just wait patiently.” Mom said.
From a doctor’s daily checkup to going home, it had all changed that day.
Chapter Five
BACK HOME
Talia ate a ham sandwich when she got home and sure enough, her teeth began to shrink away.
But how? And why? What made her mother a demon? What made her a demon?
Would she ever know?
Chapter Six
A thing began to flicker in front of Talia. It was a blue light, but it flickered, flickered, flickered…
Then it exploded right in front of her in thunder fireworks.
Chapter Seven
Talia was in a midnight garden that sparkled with luminescent lilacs and foxgloves. It was midnight from the dark sky and the pale moon.
The blue light she had seen before was nothing more than a young girl her age, grinning with the ethereal quality of an angel.
Only, her teeth were far too sharp for one…
Chapter Eight
“Tis I, Bijou. The very first to have walked the path to demonhood.” Bijou said.
She stuck out a small hand for Talia to take.
“If thee wishes to learn more, then thou hath take my hand.” Bijou said, eyes sparkling brightly with excitement.
Chapter Nine
Considering the fact that Talia grew sharp teeth in the doctor’s waiting room instantaneously, she was in no position to question Bijou’s motives, or even if Bijou was real.
Talia took Bijou’s hand as the world tilted to a time that could tell Talia the truth of who she really was.
Chapter Ten
After the world had righted itself, Talia found herself in the backyard of a cabin, the night sky speckled with stars.
Bijou flew towards it, Talia followed suit.
Chapter Eleven
When they had made it in the cabin, Talia had found a young girl sitting in her bedroom all alone, strangely, she looked just like Bijou.
“Is that you?” Talia asked, just to be sure.
Chapter Twelve
“What do you think? This was me, long ago.” Bijou said, pointing to the young girl.
Bijou was a human? Bijou once was just like Talia?
But then, whatever made her a demon?
Chapter Thirteen
“See how nothing is happening? See how I’m just looking out the window, dreaming on as I gazed at the stars?” Bijou said, pointing to herself.
Talia nodded.
“That was the problem. I dreamed too much.” Bijou said sadly.
Chapter Fourteen
“I wanted more. I wanted a life that was a fantasy, a life that would last me forever.” Bijou said.
Talia felt the air grow warmer, but it wasn’t benevolent. It was a cold, gripping feeling that tugged at the edges of her skin.
Chapter Fifteen
A clap of light exploded in front of the past version of Bijou, as though a star had erupted.
“Inside, I wished to be more. I wished to be a magical being that played at night and slept in the day.” Bijou said.
The room was alight with sparkles akin to fireworks, yet Talia felt the sorrow within them.
Chapter Sixteen
After all had cleared, she saw the human version of Bijou standing next to her.
Except, when past Bijou opened her mouth, there were rows upon rows of sharp, ravenous teeth.
There was a feral quality to Bijou’s eyes, too.
Chapter Seventeen
The both of them watched as past Bijou bolted out of her room and around the house in a frenzied, maddening dash, to the upstairs.
Talia didn’t ask, but she had a feeling that things would get bloody.
Chapter Eighteen
Once they made it to the top floor, Bijou hesitated, but followed right after Talia.
The sight of a man and a woman, lying in bed, drowning in their own blood, sheets pulled aside, was a gruesome sight to behold, but…
The scent of blood was oh so rich.
Chapter Nineteen
Past Bijou flickered in and out, as though she was panting heavily. Talia reached out to her, even though her hand went straight through.
“I too wish that I could change the past. I wanted to change, but nothing happened. My curse…it only got worse.” Bijou said.
All Bijou did was make a wish, and she got a lifetime of murder.
Why did the universe have to be so cruel?
Chapter Twenty
“I’m sorry for making that wish. I had no idea that the forces of the universe would come back to bite, that it would curse the future generations.” Bijou said.
“Your children were cursed too?” Talia asked. She didn’t think that Bijou had any children, but it would make sense for the curse to pass on.
Bijou shook her head.
“No, my curse passed on to who was closest to me, who happened to be my cousin, Christabel. She had children. I cursed those I loved all because of a wish…”
“It wasn’t your fault. You had no idea that this would happen.” Talia said in an attempt to comfort her.
Would it work? She wasn’t sure. But, Bijou deserved some kind words.
Chapter Twenty-One
There was no time to linger. Talia took Bijou’s small hand delicately in hers, and the world tilted and tumbled.
She had to go home and face her fate, whatever it may be.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Talia blinked her eyes. She was back in her room, Bijou was gone. Downstairs, she heard voices. Too many voices. It wasn’t just her parents talking, it was a whole crowd of people.
Was there a party? A gathering? What was going on? Who were all of the people?
Talia wasn’t sure if she wanted to find out.
Chapter Twenty-Three
Talia walked downstairs, curious to see what was going on. Perhaps her parents had already started the Christmas party. It didn’t seem that long that she was away, but time must have gone on.
After a while, Talia reached the bottom staircase and peeked behind the wall.
There they were, having an entire party, and Talia was on the outside, looking in.
Chapter Twenty-Four
Within every single person that she saw only during the holidays was pools of blood, veins of blood, connections of blood, all strung up in a present of flesh.
Every single one of them, unsuspecting. Every single one of them, smiling and laughing, never once glancing in Talia’s direction.
Chapter Twenty-Five
Behind her, Talia heard the gurgling and gargling of someone struggling to speak.
Talia turned around.
Standing next to the wall was a woman in a long, cotton nightgown colored pale pink, brown hair completely covered her face. She was hunched over, pale white claws twitching slightly.
“Don’t do it.” The woman rasped.
Chapter Twenty-Six
“Don’t do what?” Talia asked.
Who was the woman, and what was she going on about?
“You know what you want to do. Don’t do it. I’ve done it long ago, and it’s turned me into this.” The woman said.
Deep down in her heart, Talia sensed that the woman was Christabel, and her price was acting on her urges.
But then, if they wanted to live, weren’t they allowed to kill?
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Talia ran out of her hiding place, the words of Christabel forgotten. The scent of blood was oh so strong, her claws were sharpened, her teeth were bared.
The taste of flesh graced her mouth, the metallic blood flowing through her veins. Everything was a blur, but the noise was a distant buzz.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Everything was starting to become clear to Talia. She could hear her own panting, like that of a dog out of breath, and smelled the dank, mildew scent of blood in her mouth.
Below her was the body of her Aunt Louise, eyes gouged out, teeth mismatched, a gory mass of meat on the ground.
Aunt Louise, who used to give Talia cookies when her parents weren’t looking…
A sick, heavy feeling settled itself in the pit of Talia’s stomach.
Was she responsible for the broken state Aunt Louise was in?
Chapter Twenty-Nine
“Talia…no one can ever know about this. Ever.” Mom said, tears stinging her eyes.
She didn’t look up from the dead body, but she couldn’t hear the words of an entire crowd, she only saw the shoes of her Mom and Dad, a sign that they were there, a sign that they cared.
Talia choked back the sobs and stroked Aunt Louise’s bloodied hair.
“But we have to bury her. We have to…give her a proper resting place…” Talia tried to speak, but her words were lost in her own sadness.
The worst part of it all? Her parents didn’t seem upset. Instead, they appeared to pity her.
She didn’t deserve it. Not a single ounce.
Chapter Thirty
Mom and Dad walked up to Talia, each putting a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“We’ll tell the police that we didn’t see who came in. It was a tragic accident. Okay?” Dad said.
“How are they going to believe us?” Talia asked. She didn’t see how the police would buy it, it didn’t seem plausible enough.
“I’ll make them believe us.” Mom said, her eyes briefly a complete pale white.
Talia didn’t ask any further questions. She found out enough that night.
Epilogue
It appeared that Mom had a hypnotic side to her, a side that got the police to believe the story of an unseen murderer at the party.
Talia must have had it, too, but she didn’t dare tap into it. That night, after the Christmas party, she vowed to never start a family, so the curse would not be spread.
She only hoped that she hadn’t passed the curse to any close cousins…

Hi there Vamp! You just keep pumping these out. And might I add that having your stuff so organized with all the art is so cool and inspiring to see. It's like your own little Fandom and world.
Could Talia fly before? Because that feels like a very big development for her otherwise, and we just kinda glossed over it in half a sentence. O.o
Well, the rest of that escalated quickly o.o I would have liked to see Talia struggle with her urges a bit more? Assuming she's been a vampire it seems like going 0 to Dracula that fast is a bit surprising. Alas, Aunt Loise is down for the count (dracula).
Im not sure if get the point of the chapters either? This piece goes by really quickly thanks to your minimalistic style (which is like for this by the way) but I just didn't really get a grasp on why there was a new chapter every 3 lines or so.

I%u2019m glad you enjoyed this!
Talia just followed after her while walking, but I get how I should have made that more clear.
She%u2019s not a vampire, she%u2019s a demon.

Hey there, Wolfi here on this lovely Review Day!
Let's jump right in!
LOVE this first sentence. I like that right off the bat you name the character, the time, and the location, and even hint at the character's conflict. That's not easy to do with so few words! It's super grounding for a reader jumping into the story blind, so - kudos!
Hah, interesting!
Where does this occur? At the dining table when she's eating her ham sandwich, or in the midnight garden that we read about in the next chapter? I'm guessing it's the latter, and if so, Chapter Six reads more like a prologue/teaser to Chapter Seven. It's a little confusing, so I would consider placing the entirety of Chapter Six after the first paragraph in Chapter Seven.
Lovely description here! I'm confused about the phrasing of "it was midnight from" though - is this essentially saying "she could tell it was midnight from..."?
Haha, true enough! I like this "check-in" with Talia's thoughts.
How is it both warm and cold at the same time?
Creeepy!
Hmm, I bet Christabel is Talia's grandmother, or some other ancestor who passed her curse on to Talia's mother.
I like the detached way this is written, like there's a clear differentiation between the little girl part of Talia and the demon part.
Oh, so she only killed one person? I was imagining a murderous rampage! That's good, at least??
According to Bijou, she would!
Excellent short story, as always! I'm always impressed by how much character depth and plot you manage to pack into a relatively short word count.
The chapter breaks, though, felt particularly jarring here. I found myself doing my best to ignore them as I got caught up in the story. I honestly don't think that a single chapter break is necessary - you could just post the whole story on its own!
Keep up the great work!
So glad you enjoyed! The cold feeling is not literal coldness, it%u2019s figurative.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this read, but I'm pleased with the story. It's short and sweet but has all the irony. I would read again.
