I look in the mirror
And what do I see
Different parts
Different me’s
I try so hard
Just to fit in
It’s like being different
Is such a sin
Who am I
Behind the mask
Who am I
Why do you ask
I wear my hair up
I wear my hair down
Always a smile
Never a frown
Who am I
When I’m alone
Who am I
When I’m not a clone
I’m tired of being normal
I’m tired of being sane
I want to be different
I want my own name
No more conforming
No more lies
No more adapting
No more disguise
Who am I
What do you see
I’m perfectly unique
And I’m happy being me

HEY! chitz here for a review.
The topic about ones true self never gets old and boring . Its always a pleasure to read the thoughts of different people about what they think about portraying your true self and how one is dominated and ruled by the society and their different opinions. Your poetry nicely depicts the feelings and emotions that gets through ones mind about his or her true self. That how society sees them, how they can be more appealing to the outside people and be the one who attracts everyone. And in this race of impressing the society, we transform into something that we never thought of. Every time , we step out, we take cover under our so called famous being and hide our true self. We totally become someone else. Your piece presents this situation perfectly.
Now, when we realize that it was not that important to impress the society, its often too late. Our whole life gets indulged in impressing others. But some realize this thing earlier and hence they lead a happy life. It is more important to be true to yourself then to enchant others. The one who remains true to himself and is happy with what he or she is gifted by God are the ones who become successful and happy in life. And that is why the ending of your piece touched my heart. At the end of the day, one comes to know his or her importance.
Your set was simple and limited with words but still really beautiful. You are blessed with a great talent to express your points in short but amazing way. Sorry for being such an elaborater but i really loved it and could not stop myself and my hands from expressing my thoughts. You have written such a mesmerizing piece. I loved it.
hope to read more of you.
stay awaken, keep writing.
Thanks for sharing this poem about how we must assume different identities in society in order to fit in. The question that the poem raises is which one of those persons represents the real us.
Are we the student who behaves like a student at school in order to fit in? Are we the son or daughter who behaves in a son-like or daughter-like way in order to abide by those requirements. Are we the friend who interacts with other friends in social gatherings? Are we the patient who behaves like a patient in a hospital. Are we the father, the husband, the employee, the grocery store clerk?
All these are identities we assume temporarily in order to fit in with the situations that demand we behave in different ways. But as the poem points out, strip all these away and who are we? If indeed we are the roles that we assume, then what remains when there is no role to be assumed.
The truth of the matter is that no matter where we are, we are always assuming some role in society that provides us with some identity. Even while we gaze into the mirror we are doing it in some capacity. For example, we look in the mirror as either a man or a woman. As either heterosexual or gay. As a member of some ethnic group or race. These are categories that at re with us as we gaze in the mirror and provide us with a certain identity regardless of circumstances. In short, society and socialization has provided us with an identities which we assume temporarily without becoming inauthentic in the process. All of these identities are us but under different situations.
The poem seems to assume that conforming to society deprives us of uniqueness. Yet, what does it really mean to disregard society? If indeed we were to disregard society when we would become uncivilized. Is being uncivilized being unique. Well, not really because usually the uncivilized are criminals who wind up in prison because they pose a danger to the rest of society due to their reluctance to conform.
Was Einstein unique? Did conforming to societal expectations deprive him of uniqueness. Of course not. So the trick is to be unique with the framework of civilization.
Thanks for posting this very thought provoking poem!
Suggestions
The use of question marks would be good as well as not strting each new line with a capital letter.
Example
Who am I
behind the mask?
Who am I?
Why do you ask?
This is awesome! I love how you transition from how we try to make other see us, to just being yourself. This is so powerful, and the message is so important. I felt your rhymes weren't forced, they had a nice, natural flow to them. It can be tricky thing to find the right words, with a strong enough meaning, especially within such little brackets. Overall I thought the prom was wonderful! Keep up the great work and continue posting these awesome pieces of literature!
