“Tawsif.”
The voice sends a chilling, electric wave course beneath my skin. I know whose voice it is, but then I again I’m not perfectly sure. I can’t be.
I turn around in the slowest possible way. It’s Nidhi.
“Um, yes.”
“You look awful in that hairstyle, you know that?”
If anybody else in the world had said that, no matter a boy or a girl, I would’ve yelled without even trying to listen. But Nidhi’s remark penetrates my mind with solid power. It isn’t mockery, or coarseness, or the effect Nidhi usually has on me that induces the power; it’s the tone of her voice. She’s actually scolding me, like a friend.
A part of me wonders if the hairstyle really looks odd. It did take a long time to turn my hair—which has never before agreed to take on anything other than the plainly combed good-boy style—spiky. So I try to protest: “Really? I don’t think so.”
“I’m pretty sure,” Nidhi says, still scolding. “You better change that.”
She strolls past me and out of the class. I try to say something, maybe another weak protest, but end up floundering.
Come on, Tawsif! says the inner voice. It’s okay you like her. But that definitely doesn’t mean she can tell you whatever she wants. After all, you did make a lot of effort to get this hairstyle done. Plus, you checked in the mirror at least ten times. You looked handsome, for god’s sake! And now she calls it awful and you just agree?
I didn’t agree, okay? I fight with the voice. I did complain.
BULLSHIT! That was nothing! You should’ve been a MAN!
Okay, okay! You’re right. I didn’t act like a man. But, maybe……
Maybe what?
Maybe she’s right. I wasn’t so convinced when I looked in the mirror today. I looked… clumsy.
What? It was supposed to be the hottest hairstyle you’ve ever made.
I know. But it didn’t come out the way I wanted it to.
The silent conversation would go on and on. But all of a sudden I realize I’ve totally forgotten about the morning assembly. Possibly the assembly has already begun.
Before sprinting off, I declare my final decision on the hairstyle to the inner voice: It wasn’t hot, okay!
That night, sprawled on my bed, I keep on thinking about the hairstyle. It’s not like the thought is weighing on me; it’s rather an embarrassment. I’m not sure why I feel embarrassed. Is it because the hairstyle I anticipated so badly turned into an absolute flop? Or because Nidhi was the one to first notice I looked crazy in the hairstyle? —I don’t know. I’m totally in a muddle.
Suddenly, it hits me like a thunder.
Holy fuck! the inner voice shouts. She talked to you! For the first time in your life, she talked to you!
I fling myself up on the bed. The entire action is so abrupt that the wooden legs of the bed creak in protest. Even a moment ago I was all embarrassed, and now my entire body has turned on.
I had tried to talk with Nidhi earlier. A number of times. But I didn’t know what to say, or how to say. You can’t just bump into a girl and say, “Hey, girl! What’s up?”; not when every single boy in your class has a strict aversion towards talking to opposite gender. Though I’m usually comfortable with girls unlike my peers, that comfort would always dissolve with Nidhi. In those quagmires, I’d think of the Bollywood movies where boys of my age talk freely with girls. I wished such freedom had been possible in my country. But Bangladesh isn’t America after all.
Nevertheless, there were times when I overcame all my shyness, after a long, tormenting wrestle with the inner voice, and stood in front of Nidhi. But the moment she’d look me in the eye, the enigmatic sensation, the mixture of strength and weakness, would capture me, and I’d just look the other way and dash past her, as if I didn’t see her at all.
And today, she talked to me. Willingly!
Surges of ecstasy keep assaulting me. I find myself giggling relentlessly, almost like a hysteria patient.
As time goes by and the wild excitement diminishes, I begin to see the light more and more clearly.
Nidhi must be against the avoid-opposite-gender rule like me. Otherwise she wouldn’t come and talk to me on her own. Besides, she remarked about my hair, a completely trivial issue. It wasn’t like she talked because it was absolutely necessary.
Nidhi and I were the only ones left in the class at that moment. Was it possible that she’d waited for everybody to leave for the assembly so she could talk in private? Could be, no matter how fanciful it sounds, that she’d been looking for the chance to talk to me?
But it didn’t look like she had this all planned. There was no sign of pretense in her eyes, her voice, or the gestures. She was being natural, a friend scolding another friend.
Right, says the inner voice. No need to be excited. She isn’t falling all over you.
It’s alright, I reply. She talked to me, and that’s what matters most.

Heyo!
)
So, yeah, I got to see some interaction in this chapter, so I'm super pumped!
What I Liked
I talked about not getting to see much of Nidhi's personality in the previous chapters, but now I feel like we're getting there - slowly, but surely, I feel like I can make her out. What I know now - she is assertive, and she's got strong opinions on hairstyles. Also, she's come a long way in my mind from the shy girl she used to be. And in just two chapters! (That's a lot of development, by the way
Also, Twasif is head over his heels, fumbling and a heart-eyed crushy-lovely mess, and I am here for it. This is so sweet, and sends nice, mushy feelings straight to my heart.
We also see more awareness on region and its specific mindset, how bangladesh and america are different in terms of freedom and religious outlook, which is a positive step towards broadening your audience.
Also, I didn't review your last chapter but I loved how Tawsif sat down to let Nidhi have her turn at telling a story. It was a small thing, but it made me smile, and I just wanted to let you know. Like, how you wrote it:
It says so much, like how MC knows that Nidhi would lose her nerve if she saw Tawsif getting up too, and how much Tawsif would like for her to speak in class. It shows that Tawsif really cares about her, even understands her, and it sends my heart to absolute mush.
What I think could've been more polished
Aight, so, I feel like the internal conversation MC has with himself could've been more sophisticated? It feels conflicted and has some sexism mixed into it, which maybe is supposed to be natural but I just think it could've been better executed.
It's the same with ch. 5 and Nidhi's story. It doesn't flow as well as the rest of the story, and it would be a good idea if you went back and edited some bits of it. Its supernatural and dark setting clashes badly with the lighter theme of the story, in my opinion - and it doesn't seem very important in terms of plot. Like, if your story was finished and going through an editor, this would be one of the scenes that got deleted.
Also, Nidhi's dialogue seems a bit blunt - when she said,
I feel like something simpler, like, "I don't like your hairstyle today" would work better, because 'awful' seems rather strong, and it gives out a very strong sense of disapproval, clashing with the 'friendly scolding' that it's supposed to be. It gives a hostile feeling, and I think that's not what you were aiming for?
Anyway, so yeah, this review is going to be shorter cuz i said most of what i wanted to in the previous one - i still stand by my opinion of needing to have stronger side characters and increasing their number. More descriptions, also would love more of the mushy-ness you showed in this chapter and ch.5.
Great work so far!
Thanks. You have mentioned exactly what I thought about Nidhi's story. I think I will edit it soon.
And my request still stays!!!!
Hello! Happy Review Day! c:
Oh man, I remember those days of have UNBEARABLE crushes on people and just not being able to think of anything but them constantly!
This made me giggle a little. I feel like slowest possible way might be a tad too slow? It puts an image in my mind of someone deliberately moving and at record-breaking slow speeds all in the name of comedy. But maybe that's just me!
I feel like this sentence could be a little more simply. "Penetrates my mind with solid power" seems a bit almost excessive given the context! Maybe something more simply like "Nidhi's remark freezes my spine" (or something, I've having trouble of thinking of something simple for some reason!).
I have mixed feelings about the inner voice. On the one hand, it is kinda a cute way to display the MC's thought processes and inner conflicts, but on the other had it kinda might come off as a little tacky at times? I think you managed to have a pretty good balance with it where it was mostly good, but I think it's going to be tough to pull-off for an entire novel, if that makes sense!
I just have to disagree with the inner voice and the MC! I don't think speaking up would have made him any more of a man, than being quiet or not saying anything to disagree with her. Standing up for yourself is a good thing to do definitely at times, but it doesn't make a person more "manly".
I think you did a pretty good job on this chapter! I found myself relating to the MC's crush feelings, as I've definitely been in those situations on NUMEROUS occasions, and I wanted to tell him that everything would be okay, even if she didn't end up liking him in the end!
Keep it up!

Thanks.
Hey there! I'm currently experience writer's block for my own story so took a break to come read yours
I get what you're trying to say here, but it would clarify it just a little if you said "I'm fairly certain I know whose voice it is, but then again I can't be perfectly sure."
There should really by a question mark ? after yes.
Okay, I LOVED this part. It was funny, yet also gave a really good insight into the MC's mind and his thought process. It made the story much more personal, which I like.
This chapter was so sweet, I'm glad they finally got to talk! I would have loved for the MC to maybe give a detailed description of how Nidhi looked, but apart from that this was a really good chapter. I can't wait for the next!
Keep writing!
Thanks for the review, mate.
This is pretty good! This is the first chapter I’ve read, so I’m hoping to find parts 1-5 so I can catch up. Well-rounded characters, deep thoughts, wow, I love this. Great job! Happy writing!
