Under the Lemon Tree

In Fiction: Stories

It was there under the lemon tree,

that the boy soon learned

of the fate and frustration,

that the sun seem to throw.

It didn't take long for the boy to grow

but what he worried about now

was if his mind had shown.

There wasn't much he could say,

that would cause him dismay

But the simple words from others,

told him to hide away.

It was there under the lemon tree,

that the boy soon learned

of the cruelty of others,

that the sun seem to throw.

Long before he saw the world,

with it's shadow lies

and winters that fly,

reality stuck in his mind

like a dead mine and now

he could only thank the tree for

lost of time.

It was under that lemon tree,

where his world was blind

by the hopes of a future,

in the lost freedom mind.

His eyes were gone

and there he laid

under a tree,

that forgot his name.

Hey! Sahib the Scribe here and I just wanted to give you some feedback to append what Alice here said. I too am missing the point a little bit. It seems to me that you have a message in mind, but I don't know if you are communicating it in the best way possible.

It was there under the lemon tree,
that the boy soon learned
of the fate and frustration,
that the sun seem to throw.

Maybe you could clarify here what exactly you mean about the sun's frustration because that analogy seems to be kind of vague.

Besides that, the message is really quite beautiful and the poem itself has a good flow to it. I agree with Alice however that you could use stanzas because poems like this with such abstract comparisons benefit from a more concrete structure. All in all, you are most definitely a good writer and the poem has merits of its own and stands as a testament to your skill. Keep crafting!

Thanks. Yeah I tried to place them into stanzas but this is how it keeps turning out. You think I should put like this %u27A1"~" in between them or would that just look messy.

Hey I'm here to review your poem!

It was there under the lemon tree,
    that the boy soon learned
    of the fate and frustration
that the sun seem to throw.

I feel like your poem needs stanzas. I think this is a good place to end the first stanza. Also I don't see any rhyme at first but then you start rhyming all of the sudden. The rhyme pattern isn't very clear. I mean later it is but at first, it's not.

It didn't take long for the boy to grow
but what he worried about now,
was if his mind had shown.
There wasn't much he could say,
    that would cause him dismay.
But the simple words from others,
    told him to hide away.

I've noticed that your punctuation is a little weird. I'm glad that you have some but I feel like you have to much. Try reading your poem as if it's a paragraph and has sentences. I feel like you have way to many awkward commas.

But it was there under the lemon tree,
    that the boy soon learned
    of the cruelty of others,
that the sun seem to throw.
Long before he saw the world,
    With it's shadow lies
    and winters that flies,

"winters that flies" doesn't make sense. It also seems like the rhyme is too easy and feels forced.

    reality stuck in his mind,
like a dead mine and now,
he could only thank the tree for
    lost of time.

"dead mine"? "lost of time"?

It was under that lemon tree,
    where his world was blind
by the hopes of a future
    in the lost freedom mind.

"lost freedom mind"? Also I feel like you are trying to hard to be poetic and I don't really get the message of the poem. It feels like you are just writing out things that sounds good instead of make sense.

    His eyes were gone,
    but there he laid
    under a tree,
    that forgot his name.

I don't really get the last line but maybe it's just me not getting your poem.

My biggest recommendation for you is to read your poem out loud and to pause every time you put a comma. Make sure it sound normal xD

Anyway I hope my review was helpful,
Alice
