Chapter 4: Sinister Reading

I’m aware that I shouldn’t be making deals or bargains with entities. But, when you’re sixteen, and your brother is the only friend you had, are you just supposed to let them die? In my case, I couldn’t let that happen. Also, I remember feeling enchanted by Hecate’s presence, not scared. Like she was someone to trust, so why wouldn’t I agree to that bargain? But now that Keenan and I don’t talk anymore, it seems like a waste of magic.

I watch as Rosalie starts lighting the candles on the table, one by one, as she takes out her tarot cards. She stacks them on the side of the table and then spreads them out in one smooth motion. No wonder she gets a lot of clients, she seems to know exactly what she’s doing. Then again, she’s a real witch, and around here, it’s hard to not find a fake. You have to do some research or have connections to the magic realm.

Rosalie looks over at me, “So let me get this straight, are you the one that did the spell, or Hecate herself?”

I study her, “I did the spell to summon Hecate, but she brought back my brother herself.”

“I see,” She hums, closing her eyes and moving her hand above the cards.

I’ve always been fascinated by tarot cards, but I never learned or understood how to use them. I suppose I should’ve, given the circumstances. I find comfort in knowing you can tell someone’s future, or your own, and what path they need to take to avoid or get there. It’s somewhat of a life hack. Today, though, we’re using them to give us some idea of where Keenan is.

“Pick three cards,” Rosalie opens her eyes, “And only flip over one.”

I gently pick up three random cards from the spread and lay one of them down face-up on the table in front of me. It’s a picture of a hand holding a lantern, with the star in the middle.

“Ah, The Hermit,” She keens, caressing the side of the table, almost seductively. There’s something about this woman that’s angelic and calming, similar to Hecate, “Self-reflection, caution, vigilance… It seems your brother is… well, hiding.”

“Hiding?” I questioned.

“Yes, young one… hiding. He is afraid of himself, in some way…” She purrs once again, closing her eyes and breathing in loudly, “Maybe even afraid of you, but it’s hard to tell. Flip over a second card, please, darling.”

I hesitate but flip over the second card.

This time I’m looking at something that appears to be right out of a law textbook.

“Justice,” Rosalie starts, “Virtue, honor, balance. He craves balance. He may be in town.”

In town. That means he’s most likely staying at a hotel. He doesn’t talk to anyone here anymore. I wonder if he’s hiding here. For what reason though? Hiding from what?

I flip over the last card without Rosalie telling me to. It’s a picture of two people intertwined.

“The Lovers,” She coos once more, “Trust, optimism, bonding… not necessarily always a romantic card. In this case, I suppose, he’s looking for you.”

I stand up and all the candles suddenly go out. It’s now completely black in the room except for the twinkling light from the fireplace in the other room.

“Unfortunately, my dear, you may be too late,” Rosalie starts laughing, almost hysterically, as if her body is no longer her own. Nina runs out from the other room and grabs her mother from the chair, dragging her upstairs by her arms.

“You’re too late, you’re too late, you’re too late,” She sang as she got dragged, still laughing in between words. My heart, at this point, is beating at almost one hundred miles per hour. Edris bursts out of his chair and takes my arm, pulling me through the door. I can still hear her even as I go outside, Rosalie singing the chime.

As we get in the car, I let out a deep breath, and a tear runs down my cheek.

“Don’t listen to her,” Edris starts pulling out of the driveway, “She’s always been bonkers.”

I look in front of me as he drives back home. It’s now 3am. We’ve been at this for almost three hours. My eyes are now droopy, red, swollen, and my skin dry; all I want to do is sleep. I need sleep. I need to clear my brain and start looking for Keenan tomorrow. It’s not too late, I can still feel my son’s soul. It’s light, but it’s still there. We have time.

When we pull into the driveway, I notice Sybil’s car is now in the driveway. She must’ve gotten in a fight with her friend and came back early.

Still shaken up, Edris and I walk inside to see our daughter sitting at the dinner table, her arms crossed and a smug expression on her face. Her blonde hair is tied back in a tight ponytail and she’s still wearing the clothes she went out in.

“I know everything already, don’t worry,” she says.

Edris and I both pause. She stands, “I felt Malachi’s energy fade from this city, and I knew it wasn’t either of you with him. So, I traced it. Through the sibling witchy bond or whatever. And I found him.”

“You found him?!” I burst out.

“But he’s not here, mom. That’s the thing. And when I say here, I mean in this realm. I can’t sense his physical body, only his vibrations, energy… things like that.”

I know exactly where Malachi is.

Woohoo I'm all caught up!

I liked hearing more about Minerva's past, and how she got to today. It definitely makes her character more understandable. The reflection about her brother kind of seems to mirror her feelings about Malachi, and I'm always a fan of plots that are founded by history repeating itself, or things coming full circle so I'm definitely on board with this.

The first part of this though, I'd like to see more of Minerva's feelings. Up to now she's been (quite rightly) very concerned and hyper aware of her son, but she now seems distracted by her brother and Malachi temporarily forgotten which I'm not too sure is completely realistic.

Also going to agree with Mess below that the whole scene felt a little too quick given the time parameters we've been given here. I'd like a bit more of a build up too. The jump scare of her laughing is great, but the tension build isn't really there.

I love that we get to meet Sybil in this chapter. She's a very calm and collected and a nice contrast to Minerva. I don't really get how she knows everything, seeing as lots happened to Minerva before Sybil was even around, but I guess we'll find out in the next chapter or so!

Feel free to tag me if and when you post the next chapter of this :)

Hello Leya! I hope you're having a good day/night. As I have started writing this, this is still in the green room, so let's do something about that :)

Minerva has some valid points here, and I don't really blame her for falling for Hecate's tricks. This paragraph also did something pretty cool in my opinion; it hinted at Minerva's childhood not being very good without straight up saying, "Yeah, it sucked." She didn't say anything directly about her parents, but the readers were able to draw that conclusion. Her suggesting that bringing Keenan back was a waste because they don't talk anymore is kind of selfish coming from her. If she loved her brother that much, shouldn't she be happy that he's back to begin with without expecting anything in return from him?

However, it doesn't feel super in place with this chapter. It feels like a very sudden start, and I think some rewording could have it fit better as an ending for the previous chapter. Then, the next paragraph with Rosalie setting everything up could be the new starter.

I'm super stoked we got to meet Sybil this chapter! Great on her for being able to lead the investigation in the right direction, however, I am a little confused. She seems way too calm in this scenario. I know some teenagers try too hard to act cool or tough, but come on Sybil, this is your brother for crying out loud. Her being described as smug makes me think that she may not have the best relationship with her parents, like she's proud that she knows something that they don't. Again though, it would make more sense for her to act more worried or panicked. I've noticed that this bunch of characters doesn't act in the "typical" way all that often, so I imagine this was done intentionally.

Once again, the ending has done a wonderful job at getting me excited for the next chapter. Minerva's confidence in where Malichi is hints at some much of her backstory being revealed, at least to me, and she is definitely a character I'd love to know more about. Happy writing!

Thank you for the review! I really appreciate it, @Wors6ip!

Alright. Let's do this ooone laaast tiiime

1. Valid thoughts by Minerva in the beginning. You haven't stated it but it seems that her upbringing was not only rough, but perhaps void of any real mentors or parent figures to follow, so allowing Hecate in makes sense. Sort of a Palpatine/Anakin thing.

2. I wish the tarot card bit was longer. For one thing, when they leave they says it's 3AM but they were eating dinner when this all started and they lefts before the cops were barely off the premise. Seems a bit rushed, but that is a bit nitpicky so take it with a grain of salt.

3. So Keenan is hiding, and Rosalie starts to go a little crazy. I was wondering why Nina wasn't back with the tea already. I also thought they might wait foe her to come bqck down to talk to her, but I guess they're in a rush.

4. I also thought that the climax of the tarot card scene was very rushed. We see he's hiding and then BOOM we're out the door with Rosalie upstairs. I would expect more of a reaction. Minerva maybe asking what she means by that. Edris acting confused and unsure but what's happening. And I'm also not sure why Rosalie went so strange all of a sudden. She's a psychic, so it's not like she doesn't see stuff all the time. Why does them being too late for Keenan set her off like that?

5. Yay, we get to meet Sybil. I was hoping we would get a little more from her. I thought Minerva may show some affection as well, at the sight of one of her children being safe. Also, how does she k own everything? Maybe she can feel that he's not here, but she doesn't know about Hecate, surely? Minerva didn't even think of it right away. Shouldn't she be confused and scared and worried about why he's feeling this way? And don't they have cell phones? Shouldn't someone have called Keenan, or Sybil have called him?

I just have a lot of questions. I hope this isn't coming on as overbearing!
