The luggage bags under my eyes

The sky stretches in panoramic view
grey clouds slowly inching their way through the air
letting the rain off their shoulders
before they evaporate.
Like the scene of an indie movie,
where I list off my internal monologue
that becomes external dialogue because the words are on my lips now.
The words are in the air now.
The words are gone now and I have nothing left.

I worry what will kill me,
when worry will kill me.
The unidentifiable dull stabbing pains in my chest
that feels like a blade with soft edges and rust gathering over it
being slid in between my ribcage.
I will use metaphors for things
I haven't felt,
and I will check WebMD three times a day to make sure I'm not dying.
I list the symptoms, the letters spill out onto the keyboard frantically
A page detailing cardiac arrest pops up
but apprehension wasn't one of the symptoms.

I catch a smile on my lips
when I think of old memories
while walking down the sidewalk.
Bony and slender hands outreach towards them and for a moment
I touch them.
My memories are like clay that hasn't been fired,
morphing and forming into something completely different
I leave fresh fingerprints behind on the small sculptures
and I'm the culprit again.

I pour the Pepto-Bismol onto my chest
and hope that the burning goes away.
The pink liquid eats away at the forest fires
that the blotched skin represents on my body.

We took telescopes to the sun,
eyes melt out of their sockets so that they are hollow.
Irises mix in a puddle of white on the pavement,
the color seeping into the gaps where stone has been eroded.
A pupil wavers in the mix
like the yoke of an egg;
scatter the eggshells
that compose the outer layer of my bones.

Eyes red
like in old family pictures.
The small white bar of space to label the date
is scribbled out with sharpie marker.

I lay down in the backseat
my body sprawled across the seats,
shoulders touching the cold metal seat-belts.

I close my eyes, the sun projects itself over my eyelids,
and everything becomes red and pink like flesh.
The car freshener that dangles by the rear-view mirror
is starting to fade away
like the streets do and like the scenery does.
It becomes a blur in my mind like a
badly taken picture.
My fingertips touch the ceiling of the car
and I imagine it's the sky.
A beige sky that is closing in on me,
and when they say they want to touch the sky
I tell them they'd regret it.

I'll be carrying the bags under my eyes around
for awhile.
And I'll count the rings around them
as if they are trees,
and see if the numbers add up,
when my years are slowly running out.

Hey, Ats! I was scrolling through the green room and decided I'd get this out of here for you!

Anyway, wow. This was an interesting piece,I'll give you that. But I did have a few things that bugged me.
The first thing was in the third line-

letting the rain off their shoulders

Now, from what I understand about clouds, when rain falls it falls from under the clouds. Like from the bottom. This would need to be corrected to be accurate, but I understand from imagery it doesn't have to be accurate imagery. This is where you're better than me.

The next thing I noticed was this-
Bony and slender hands outreach towards them and for a moment

This is just a grammar nit-pick and I may be wrong- but considering the tense shouldn't this be-
"Bony and slender hands outreach toward them and for a moment."
Or you could change,"outreach," to,"outreached." This would fix the problem. I only say this because reading this in my head and out loud this sounded odd to me.

My memories are like clay that hasn't been fired,

I'm not seeing how,"fired," pertains to the rest of the line, or the stanza for that matter. Clay isn't fired, and this feels like you were stretching for imagery.

Another thing that bugs me is the title. "Luggage bags."How does this pertain to the poem? I notice you say you'll carry these bags under your eyes, but I'm not seeing how luggage pertains to this poem.

Now, another thing(and I've nit-picked this before!) is your switching in imagery. It's as if you're constantly changing ideas in the middle, then repeating an older idea later on in the poem. This may or may not be intentional, and if it is, then I guess I don't understand it. What I mean by this is that you use,"pictures," in a few of the stanzas, then change the imagery in the same stanza, and THEN use it again. The same with the rain and the sky, and fire imagery.

Anyway, I guess that's all I have to say for now. I hope this helped, at least a bit!

Keep on doing what you're doing, and keep on keeping on!

Your friend, Matthew Casanova Aaron.

Thanks for the review!

Hey there!

So I'm reading this poem at a kind of difficult time in my life and I feel every single emotion expressed here. Just the title alone seems to reflect the feeling I have sometimes of the bags under my eyes weighing me down and I think that just speaks for how impactful this poem is! I also have a weakness for poems that don't rhyme, so brownie points to you for that ;)

I'm excited to read more of your writing and I hope that you plan to continue to write! Also, please remember to try and take care of yourself! I know I forget sometimes and that can lead me to some really dark places, so if you ever need anyone to talk to anyone I'm right here! I hope your having a great day/night, bye!
