Down! Down, deep, deep down,
In the whispering weltering water,
Safe under a stone I cannot falter.
But you just stare down and frown.
~~~
Silly bird! Haven't you heard?
Everyone has. All but you.
You haven't got a clue.
You're such a nerd.
~~~
No! What you do is dangerous, distracting!
It's buried under filth so steep!
I am safe. I will not take that leap.
Down, deep, deep down, you cannot sting.
~~~
You live under a rock.
You're dumb.
You have no fun.
You're a traditional shock.
~~~
Swim off, you shark!
I'm not here for you to mock.
I like it here under this rock.
It's cozy and dark.
~~~
Down, deep, deep down,
The current cannot stalk
A soul safe under a rock,
Down, deep, deep down.
There is a little dude hangin' out under that rock, by the way...Zoom in on the cover page.
Good day! Came here to review your work and deliver your order of one alpaca magnet set! I apologize for the delay and I hope you are satisfied with your order. On to the review!
First Impression
I got a bit confused at first when I first read this poem until I got to the middle part. I believe this is supposed to be a conversation between a shark and bird, which is quite interesting. Judging from your picture, the bird is living under a rock near a river or a creek. It is safe to assume that the shark may be somewhere inside that creek. One of the things that threw me off was that this was patterned as a conversation, but I had to reread the poem to make sure that I was associating the correct stanzas with the correct characters. Perhaps it will be nice to add something like "BIRD: etc etc" so that people won't get too confused and first-time readers would wonder who on earth Bird and Shark are hahahah
Actual Review
So the actual review will just tackle my overall take on the poem. In the first stanza, I see it's the bird who's talking, saying how it is safe under the rock. I find it peculiar how it addresses the shark as "But you just stare down and frown." If the bird is somewhere safe, shouldn't it be above the shark? If it is below the shark and not dead yet, it means it's in a semi-closed rock underwater which may mean it could drown. If we're going to refer to the picture in the cover, I would go with my first take on it. Maybe it would be nice to change it to "But you just sit down and frown." It would be much more comical, but also a way to tell the readers that this poem is light-hearted. In the next few stanzas, we see the shark mocking the poor bird for not getting out of his comfort zone, unlike the others. The bird protests, saying that he is safe in the rock. At first, people may think that the bird is staying inside because of the shark, but the last few stanzas confirm that its simply just the bird's comfort space more than anything else, which is why it is staying there.
Reflection on Themes and Elements
If you haven't noticed with my other reviews, I tend to overanalyze so please forgive me if I go overboard HAHAHA
The most prominent element you use here is the titular phrase, "Down, deep, deep down". This means two things in my opinion. It can have a positive meaning. It could show that one is comfort with the beliefs they have down, deep, deep down. Just like how some Christians have faith that seems so deep, they are firm in their convictions and cannot be moved because their foundation is built deep deep down. However, it can mean something negative. One can be deep down in their faith or deep down in their sins or vices. Perhaps the shark is actually a friend. The bird just doesn't want to get out because it is his safe space and anyone that coerces him to get out is like an enemy. The shark persuades him to get out, because his other friends have escaped, but the bird sees it in a negative light and dismisses it.
For me, some prominent themes include the boundary between safety and going out of your comfort zone. It also involve themes of standing firm to your beliefs. Whether it's out of stubbornness or out of conviction, perhaps we will never know. One can only assume.
What the Work Reminds Me Of
Your work is similar to a children's story, especially those fables that teach lessons. The only difference is that the lesson here is not explicit. It is quite ambiguous and one can draw their own conclusion from it. People can use it to teach children to abstain from getting deep down into bad things or encourage their children to explore their beliefs and faith deep down. It can work both ways.
Summary
Overall, this is an interesting and wonderful poem! I'm glad to see you posting some pieces of poetry, a nice change to your posting of "I Know" hahahah (although I Know is great as well). Hope to see more poems from you!
Alpaca Magnet Set delivered! This is alpacaboss, signing off.
Hi, alpaca! Thanks for dropping by!
I do have another (maybe better) humorous poem, Never Ask a Writer This if you are interested, but no need to read if you don't want to.
Hmmm...For some reason I was not notified about this review. *Worried*
Anyway, hmmm...So, it is as I expected: the theme is too hard to find and some of the insults that go back and forth throw the reader off...
What this is suppose to be is a conversation between a highschool Christian and a bullying crowd who are making fun of the Christian for not participating in the stuff they do.
I suspect that my use of insults like "bird" and "shark" threw off the idea, but starting from stanza one, the bullied kid is speaking followed by the next stanza where the bullying kids respond.
Anyway, it's totally not your fault if you didn't get that. Only my mom has gotten the theme of this poem so far of everyone who has read it.
And haha, I'm getting to the last chapters on that and the writing's getting harder.
Again, thanks for the review. I'll try to make the themes of my poetry a little more obvious in the future.
Ahh I can see how that works. I would get it more if you capitalized words like %u201CRock%u201D because that would make me think of Jesus who is our Rock, our solid ground. And that may lead me to the conclusion you%u2019re going for
Have a nice day!
Ooohh..I didnt even think of that!! Thanks for the suggestion!
you are most welcome!
Hey Kaia,
its been a long time since I left a review for you. But no worries here I am again.
Who knew the dark mystery writer down, deep, deep, down had a soft spot for poetry, I am impressed by this poem.
~~~
First of all, I think you absolutely nailed the description of nature. The title also says a lot on its own already and I love your use of Down, Deep, Deep, Down in there. You once again did a great job!
Secondly, Girl, I love the attitude towards Mr. Sharky!
<< Hope you dont mind me callin him that >>
Your little rhyme over there is nice. From Mock to Rock.
Lastly, IS the little guy from the cover talking in this poem. I have a feeling he is, because you said >>Its cosy and dark.
~~~
Overall, I think this was a nice little poem getting so off grid. I think the cover was a brilliant choice, taking you got the inspiration from your cover. Absolutely wowsome. You are a great writer! Keep writing!
I kept it short, see ya friend!
Amazingly yours,
Rinisha
Hey, girl! Been a while!
Yeah. That little salamander is probably the guy talking to that ole sharky. Yep. *Nods in agreement*
Haha! I probably did get some inspiration from the little guy we found on vacay. I had to take a picture of him and walah! Now he appears on the cover. What a little celebrity!
Thanks for the review! Appreciated as always!!
