Weird.

In 2017 Poetry

late at night
when the blinds are closed
but headlights still filter through,
illuminating my room
I wonder,
is there a higher being?
does life matter, and what will I feel when I'm dead?
why was I born to my parents, not to someone else?

then I wake up,
and get dressed,
these thoughts repeat, along with others.
while I eat breakfast, I think
why are there certain foods
that I eat for breakfast
when I prefer other things?
and while my cereal grows soggy and gross
I wonder if dogs have souls
and if my life is a story
within a story
                                 within a story
               within a story
                                                                              within a story.

while I check my makeup in the bathroom
in between plates of fancy food that get served
at some fancy restaurant
my friend likes
I find my mind
w          a   n       d  e   r  i    n        g
to thoughts
that have an answer,
but the answer pains me.
why do we hate people with different skin colours,
or why can't we be who we want to be?
why are animals dying
when humans are living,
living but ruining
when the animals were the ones
who kept the world running before we came along.

the answer haunts me
a ghost that stays
only because its troubles have yet to be resolved.
that because of us, and our problems
we force upon others
the world is such a disaster.
and people like me
just sit there watching,
spectators in Rome.
we make no effort to stop the gladiators
that kill each other, one by one.

Author's note: is this too long? I was trying to fit everything I wanted to say in, but if it gets boring than it's no use. And the capitalization is stylistic, so you don't need to add that to your review.

Just popping here to say that this felt very real and I loved how you played with the words 'wandering' and 'within a story'. Their effect could be visualized perfectly. Overall it's a really great work ;)

Hey, there! I finally made it for a review. This is probably gonna be pretty short though cause, like I said, I don't know all that much about poetry. Any reviews I do over poetry are more what I think on a personal level instead of the actual writing of it because of that.

So all in all I thought it was aight. I didn't really hate it or love it, just kind of in between. I think it was because I don't really relate to these questions, they kind of feel like questions one asks whenever they're quite young. I just don't wonder about stuff like that as most of the questions in the story don't really have answers. Personally, I wasn't really a fan of the formatting for the "wandering" and "within a story" parts.

I liked the last paragraph though, specifically the spectators in Rome part.

On the third line of the second stanza, I would take out the "along with others" part, as that seems clear without saying it, but that's me.

And I don't think it's too long at all. I've read poems WAY longer than this before.

I think I would've liked the story more if I could relate to the questions being asked in it more, but I don't think it's necessarily bad now. I do get the idea of feeling a bit separated from others, like a spectator looking in. I'm not the main character, I am more of a cameraman, a narrator, someone who listens and watches.

The last thing I want to say is that I'd change the title of the poem if it were mine, but that's up to you. I get the *idea* with the title, but I think there are other words that would fit better.

But yeah, that's all I really have to say. I don't know if this helps much, but if you have any questions or anything just let me know. I'll check out some more of your poems later if you still want.

Thanks for the review :) It was helpful

Hi! Thought I'd drop in for a quick review.

I don't know if its weird or something, but most of these questions haunt me as well. Your poem is detailed, beautiful and totally honest. I loved it!

I did not notice any grammatical errors as such. The "within a story" and "wandering" part were very unique and quaint. The same goes for the capitalization (I know you wrote a note about it, but, its just that I love the style and have to write about it). The words were written well and punctuated properly.

Now coming to the actual content of the poem. I think it was AMAZING. The title of the poem "Weird" was, well, kind of weird and it made me attracted to the poem. It is just the perfect title for such a literary work which explores unanswered questions which "normal" people may consider strange or taboo.I actually and literally have no words to describe the beautiful and relevant quality of this amazing poem of yours. The words seemed to flow out naturally and seamlessly and make the reader fascinated and want more. In short, this is what perfection looks like. Keep up the incredible work! You actually are as bright and worthy as a pearl.

Thanks you so much! I'm glad you liked my poem :)

You are welcome.

Hey there
Myjaspercat here to review your poem

Line-by-Line/Nit-Picks

late at night
when the blinds are closed
but the headlights still filter through,
illuminating my room
I wonder I would add a comma here.
is there a higher being?
does life matter, and [what] will I feel when I'm dead?
why was I born to my parents, not [to] some one else? Just so you know, "someone" is one word.

then I wake up
and get dressed I would add a comma.
and these thoughts repeat, along with others. Since you already started the previous line with and, I would just leave this one off.
while I eat breakfast, I think
why are there breakfast [certain] foods
that I eat for breakfast
when I prefer [those for] lunch foods? Two quick things: one I changed the second breakfast because having it written down three lines in a row just becomes super repetitive. Two, I took out the second "foods" for the same reason.
and while my cereal grows soggy and cold Isn't cereal always cold?
I wonder if dogs have souls
and if my life is a story
within a story
within a story
within a story
within a story.
I would actually add hyphens after the middle two "within a story(s)" if I were you.

while I check my makeup in the bathroom I would add a comma here.
in between plates of fancy food that get served
at some fancy restaurant
my friend likes I would place a period here.
I find my mind
w a n d e r i n g I love the fact that you spaced out this word, and I understand what you're trying to get across however, I would have preferred it if the spacing was just a tad bit more uniformed.
to thoughts
that should have an answer -
that do,
but the answer(s) pains <-remove the 's' if you add one to answer me. You should make answer plural because you made thought plural --unless there is only one answer to the multiple thoughts. Also you got a little redundant here. You say "that should have an answer" and then "that do," do you mean to have said "that shouldn't have an answer" or what?
why do we forbid a girl [from] marrying another girl?
why do we hate people with different skin colour(s)?
why can't we be born a boy, in a girl's body? I would add the word "or" to the beginning of this line and take away the question mark from the line before.
why are animals dying
their families dying This line feels out of place. I'm a little confused by it.
when humans are living,
living but ruining I would place some form of punctuation here.
when the animals were the ones who kept the world running before we came along. This is an interesting way of thinking. I like it.

the answer haunts me I would add a comma here
a ghost that stays
only because its troubles have yet to be resolved.
that because of us, I would replace the comma with an "and" our problems
that we force upon others
the world is such a disaster.
and people like me
just sit there watching. I would change period to a comma
spectators in Rome
making [who make] no effort to stop the gladiators
who [that] kill each other, one by one.

Final Thoughts
So, for the most part, I really like this poem. I also really enjoyed the formatting. Normally I don't like weird formatting, but here I think it really helps your story. Regarding your question, no I don't think this story is too long. It doesn't get boring either. Other then that, I think everything else is in the line-by-line. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Good luck and continue writing.

Thank you so much for the review!

This poem is a little long, but very interesting.
I love the descriptions you include though it did become very confusing at times.
You shouldn't forget to capitalize the beginning of sentences/lines, for you can look unprofessional if you forget. This poem gets deep and I love how you chased and questioned some very difficult issues we face in our world today. You used dying in two lines in a row, "why are animals dying, their families dying," which is a simple word that you don't want to overuse or use repetitively. Instead, you can use alternative words such as "passing."
Overall I liked this poem. Good job!

I'm glad it's not too long. Like I said, I used the style I preferred for this poem and though I get it isn't your thing, I already specified not to include that in your review :)
Thanks for the review!
