Godtrust ~ Chp.4

Cian’s body twitched. It began in his fingers and spread like fire- up his arms, down his chest, into his legs- until he was violently dancing with full-blown convulsions. The force of the shaking sent Alice on to her back. She dragged Cian with her. She lost her grip on him mid-fall, and they were separated.

Alice sat up, rubbing her head. She could see the two pieces of Cian in front of her. They were mere inches apart,, and getting closer. Little strings were connecting part of his body. They were wound tight, like guitar strings. The two pieces moved closer and closer, like snails, until he was back together. He stopped moving, and Alice caught her breath.

She sat by his side, patiently. He wasn’t exactly breathing, and he didn’t really have a pulse, but his fingers twitched, almost like clockwork, and he kept scratching his hair.

He woke up a while later. He would have slept longer, but Alice had grown impatient, and decided to stop moving him away from the tide. His first sound was a gasp, the second was a sigh. He was lying on his back, and reached his arms out like wings, grabbed handfuls of grass in his hands, and let out a scream. Alice was expecting him to scream like a wild animal, but what she heard was pure victory.

Darkness came before nightfall. The Secret beach was completely surrounded, barr one side. The tall cliffs cast terrible shadows, and trees, by their nature, tried not to let any light get past them. Only a gloomy light let Alice tell one shape from another, but she could see Cian’s face. They were sitting across from each other. Cian had his legs stretched out in front of him, leaning back with only his arms to support him- like he was trying to occupy as much space as possible. Alice was much more contained. Her legs were crossed, and she leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees.

“What happened to you?” she asked, after pleasantries had been exchanged.

“I died. I think.” he said, louder than she’d expected. “I’m not quite sure.”

“Well did you go to heaven or hell or what?” she said, laughing. Cian felt a prickling at the prickling at the back of his neck. He couldn’t remember most of what had happened. All he could remember was Lucy. He thought Lucy was a boy at first, but thinking over it now, he didn’t know why he had mistaken. Lucy had the hair, big eyes, and full lips that marked her as a woman. Biologically, anyway. But her words kept ringing in his ears. I am neither. She had said. But he couldn’t think of anything, between male and female, so he just went with calling her a girl.

The encounter felt like a secret. He didn’t want to lie to Alice, but it felt like he would be betraying a friend, so he kept his mouth shut. “I went to neither.” He said. “It was just like sleepin’, to be honest. Like those ones where you don’t have a dream and it’s just black.”

“That’s depressing. Was there no white lights? Like, I doubt you’d go to hell. And you were killed, so that should be, like, a free pass or something,”

“I was killed?” his raised his eyebrows, and Alice could tell that he was more curious than mad.

“Yeah.” Alice looked down and started twiddling her thumbs. “I think it was my fault. I’m not sure.”

“How can’t you be sure.”

“Like, I think I did it. But i’ve been trying to make sure, but I can’t do it, so I’m not sure.”

“Can’t do what, exactly. What did you do anyway?” Alice pushed herself on to the ground, and ran her fingers through the grass.

“It’s something to do with the grass. And the plants. And the trees too, I think. But I’m not sure.” There was a pause. The flow of conversation died, and Alice took her opportunity. “Why aren't you mad, Cian.” Alice was happy for the dimming sky. It gave her something to look at, other than his face.

“It’s behind us.” he lied. In truth, he was happy he died. He had so many of his questions answered. He just thought of it as a dream, and left it at that. He lay back down, and looked up at the sky. “What’s happening to us?” he asked no one, and Alice replied, half-asleep:

“Something terrible, but we can sleep in off.”

*

The pursuer was a lovely person, admittedly. He was a short boy, who went by the name green. He had shoulder length brown hair, with no fringe, that made his face look square. His eyes seemed to be constantly half-closed, but he could see just fine.

Hannah was enjoying the warmth of green’s fire. Her jaw had nearly dropped open when he made fire out of sticks. He tried to show her how, but the sticks kept deteriorating in her hands. Poppy wasn’t able to grasp it either, which made her feel a bit better.

Poppy feel asleep after they exchanged ghost stories. Hannah had stopped smiling then. Poppy’s head rested on her lap, and she stroked her head with the back of her hand periodically. “Now you’re goin’ to tell me” Hannah said bitterly. “Just who the hell you are, and why you followed us here.”

“I thought we were having fun.” Green laughed. “Okay.” He said. Then he strongly declared, “I am Green J. Green. I live here in this forest.” he stared at her strongly. Hannah tried to say something back, but like a cue, he talked over her. “I followed you because I saw you were having trouble carrying the little girl, so I decided to help.” He calmed his voice, letting the comical sternness fade away. “I didn’t want to seem like a creep, though, so I was going to wait until you stopped to nonchalantly walk over and offer to assist. But you didn’t stop. Next thing I knew, I was falling out of a tree. D’you do that?”

“Yes.” Hannah replied. She had put down some of her walls, but couldn’t risk being friendly with him, for real, just yet. “My hands are acting weird. When I touch things, living things, I think, they just kind of rot away.” she couldn't stop looking at them. They didn’t seem any different. “Is anything weird happening to you?”

“Yeah yeah yeah.” he said excitedly. “Watch this!” He exclaimed. At first Hannah thought he was jumping, be he just kept going up and up. He was just floating in mid-air.

“You can fly?” Hannah was surprised, but not shocked. She’d seen a bit too much to experience true shock.

“No. Not really.” his voice broke. “I can’t move once I’m up here, just kind of float. I don’t go much higher than this either.” the boy was clearly sad. Hannah felt sorry for him. Not because he couldn’t fly, but because it made him sad. She always had pity for people who couldn’t love themselves for everything they were.

“I see.” she said quietly. “Do you know where we are?”

“What’s the last thing you remember doing before you woke up here?” he asked, abruptly changing the subject.

“Where are we?” Hannah answered, stressing each syllable. She was finding it hard to pt power in her voice, when she had to constantly check how loud she was being. Poppy was probably exhausted, and she didn’t have it in her to wake her.

Green didn’t answer her question. Instead, he locked his fingers together, and rested his chin on them. It was a direct insult, especially coming from a boy so much younger than her. But Hannah knew he knew something-she had to leave her pride behind on this one. “We made a wish at the Godtrust on the other side of the island and woke up here. Now, where are we?”

“How do you know you’re someplace different?” Green retorted. Hannah laughed.

“A cow went missing two months ago, and the whole village did a sweep of the island. There aren’t many places to hide here. If we were at home, we would have been found by now. Where are we?” Green snickered.

“Okay. But you’re not going to belie..”

“Try me.” Hannah interjected.

“Fine.” the boy ran his fingers through his hair. Hannah was throwing him off, and she loved it. “We’re in some sort of different world, Hannah. I don’t know all of what’s going on, i’m afraid. But I do know that there are no other people here, and no way to leave this island. We’ve tried.”

“We?”

“I came here with three friends. But they're all gone now “ he looked down at his hands, and started messing with this nails.

“What happened to them?” Hannah asked. She was trying to put some sympathy in her voice now, but she couldn’t get over her gut feeling that was saying ‘this boy is bad.’ Her words came out like ice.

“There are things on this island, Hannah. Horrible things.” the wind rustled the the trees that surrounded them for a moment. The sound sent shivers up her spine. A moment later ,Hannah’s face went red. Green smiled understandingly.

Hi HighTop!

Eeee, I am sorry I am late. But better late than never (is my excuse all the time xD) So! I always love reading your chapters because they keep getting better and better, and this story is so interesting to follow. I am listing what I know so far, just so I check I've got it all down. Green can float, to a limited height, Hannah has things deteriorate in her hands, Poppy disappears and appears, Alice controls plants (even though she doesn't quite know how it works yet) and Cian comes back from the dead? I think that may be it, right?

One question about that though: if things deteriorate in Hannah's hands, doesn't that mean she can't touch anything? Including Poppy? Or does it just not seem to work on humans? I think this may be something that needs a bit more explanation, because Hannah's power, so to speak, seems the haziest to me.

As always, your chapters have brilliant descriptions and imagery. I really don't know how you do it. But the moment Green was mentioned I could picture him perfectly, and the situations, and Cian piecing his body back together with strings. It's so easy to see in my mind, and I love that!

The force of the shaking sent Alice on to her back. She dragged Cian with her. She lost her grip on him mid-fall, and they were separated.

I got what you meant, but when you said that she dragged Cian with her I pictured her already on the ground[, the fall over. Maybe you should make them one sentence, like: The force of the shaking sent Alice on to her back, her hands pulling Cian after her. She lost her grip... etc.

He was lying on his back, and reached his arms out like wings, grabbed handfuls of grass in his hands, and let out a scream.

This seemed like a bit of a run on sentence with too many commas. Maybe split it up into two. Also, saying his arms reached out like wings made me think he was stretching them towards the sky, not on the earth grabbing bits of grass. So in the example I also changed the wording a bit. My example: He was lying on his back, his arms splayed out on the ground. He grabbed handfuls of grass and let out a scream.

tried not to let any light get past them. Only a gloomy light let Alice tell one shape from

Here it's simply the repetition of the word 'light' twice. I wouldn't completely know what to replace it with, so maybe synonyms could you help you out more than I could here :P I do have one possibility which could be change the second light to mist?

he didn’t know why he had mistaken.

I feel like this is missing one word. Maybe 'he didn't know why he had been mistaken.'

Also, when Cian first wakes up, it was weird seeing Alice using like and laughing so much. Maybe you should mention the word relief in there, or make it seem like she's acting out of a nervous relief because Cian being alive again means she hasn't really killed anyone. I feel like you used the laughing and 'like' using to show this, but it wasn't enough on it's own. I think it needs to be mentioned in the narrative as well.

“Can’t do what, exactly. What did you do anyway?”

“Why aren't you mad, Cian.”

"How can't you be sure."

Nitpicks! All these questions need their question marks!

But i've been trying
I don’t know all of what’s going on, i’m afraid.

Another nitpick xD Some of these I's need capitalizing.

He had so many of his questions answered.

It should be 'he'd had.'

who went by the name green.

Hannah was enjoying the warmth of green’s fire.

More nitpicks :D Because Green is his name, it needs capitalizing here.

Poppy feel asleep

Should be: Poppy fell asleep.

“Now you’re goin’ to tell me” Hannah said bitterly

But they're all gone now “ he looked down

Here are two cases where you need to add some punctuation to your dialogue.

Then he strongly declared, “I am Green J. Green. I live here in this forest.” he stared at her strongly.

You use strongly twice, so you change one of them. Personally, I would change both of them because strongly seems like the wrong word. I don't feel like you even need an adverb with declared, and staring strongly seems a bit weird. Maybe his stare pierced her? Or he stared unwaveringly at her?

Hannah tried to say something back, but like a cue, he talked over her

I suggest you cut the 'like a cure' and just make it Green talking over her. It doesn't make complete sense otherwise.

finding it hard to pt power in her voice, when she had to constantly check how loud she was being.

It should be put here, a small typo. I also think 'when' is the wrong word to use here. Maybe and instead?

“Okay. But you’re not going to belie..”

This could just be me, but it looks a bit weird. I would suggest you make Hannah interrupt him after he completes the word believe. Then it can just be a mid sentence thing.

Well that's all the feedback I can give! There are so many ways you can go with this, I can't wait to find out what will happen next. I am curious to know what exactly happened to Green's friends as well :P The pacing is perfect and the plot developing fantastically, only just at the beginning as well. Let me know when you post the next chapter, and hopefully I can get there faster as well!

Oops I did that weird quote in quote thingy again...

Thank you Deanie! ^_^ Just to clarify Hannah's power, you're completely right, but it's localized to the palms of her hands. She dragged Poppy by hugging on of he legs to her chefs; and was stroking her hair with the back of her hand. I hope that clears some stuff up! ^_^

Did she do that because she knew where it was localized to, or just by chance?

She figured it out. ;) There'll be a flashback soon. :D

Oh snap! This just keeps getting more and more interesting. Here's my chapter four, review for you! :D

*Stretches* *bites sandwich*

Okay, so, things I liked here. It's pretty much the same story as all of my other reviews of this novel so far. The characters, narrative voice, and descriptive language is still very good. There's still a few symbols here that are yet to be utilized, but that's a good thing. I think you've reached the point in the novel where the actual sequence of events and themes are more important than how many symbols you can bring in. Still, it's nice that you've given yourself that option should you need to use them to explain something later on.

What I noticed about this chapter that was different from all of the others was that it was a little bit less idea-centric and just more dialogue-based. The main thing I was looking for here was more development on the Poppy/Hannah side of things, so I was happy to see more quotation marks here and there. The dynamic between Cian and Alice is just about where it was in chapter three, but you've added an entire new dimension to that with the character of Lucy that I think will manifest itself more clearly later on. Speaking of Lucy, it's very cool how you've introduced Green to the story. His introduction not only offers the reader with someone to compare and contrast Lucy with, but also confirms your use of the two subgroups of the "nameless club" as foils for one another. It's going to be very interesting to continue to follow these to subgroups and observe what happens when they are reunited...if they are ever reunited. I also like that you've confirmed the existence of an alternative universe within which the four friends have somehow been trapped. It almost makes me wonder whether or not they're actually in the same place. What if Alice and Cian are in a completely different dimension than Hannah and Poppy and what if Lucy and Green are really the same being that's just messing with these mere mortals? Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see. Great job of continuing to immerse the reader within the text and to really allow them to actively engage with your characters and their experiences. The sheer entertainment value of these first four chapters bodes extremely well for you going forward.

*The same damn unicorn swoops in again, knocks all of the things off of my kitchen counter, takes a few bites out of my brand new sofa, looks me in the eye with a determined glint of spontaneity, and shouts* "CON STRUCT TIVE CRITICISMS! NOW, HOMIE!"

*Jerks back.* *speaks* "Okay, okay. I got it. *Begins*

Okay so, like I said in the last few reviews, go back and reread this really carefully to filter out any possible points of concern. I actually didn't find as many in this chapter, but it's still worth your while. Proofreading is a novelist's-no, any writer's best, best friend. You might even say Proofreading is a good enough friend that it'll try to put the pieces of our bodies back together when weird enchanted grass cuts us all up. -_- Maybe not, but you catch my drift.

The second thing that I will mention to you here is just what I said after the last chapter. I went into this looking for further explanation and development of the Hannah/Poppy subgroup's experience. After having read this chapter over twice, I found that I did in fact receive that, but not nearly in as much detail or with as much emphasis on Poppy's side of things as I would've liked. Still, this is a novel, so if you choose to leave that for later, it could still work very well. In this chapter, there was a little bit more information given about Hannah's personality, most notably her pridefulness and fiery disposition when under pressure. That was great, and it worked wonders towards your audience getting to know her character better. All of a sudden, they've got even more choices to play around with for which character they're following the most. I just think you should try to do the same thing with Poppy. Not that she's a stagnant character at this point, but after chapter one, we don't really get as much about her as we do about the other three. It doesn't really matter when you choose to do that, because you might have something awesome up your sleeve that you're saving for later on. Just try to do it before you...you know, kill her off. XD.

All else aside, this novel is cool as hell. You should be really proud of the work you've done with this so far. I look forward to continuing to see how the story unfolds in the chapters to come. I've gone totally #beastmode on reviewing today, so I hope all of this helps you going forward. :) Way to go! Thanks for sharing this amazing novel with me and for allowing me to be the first reviewer on your newest chapter! Great job, buddy and remember,

*unicorn flies back in* *bumps me away from laptop*
