The Final Farewell

***If I make mistakes, let me know. I am not in my right mind at this particular moment, and am merely writing what I feel as I feel it. As you read, you should understand why.***
_
Your feeble hands, so white and cracked,
will never pull a brush through my hair.
Your nails, like an eagle's talons,
will never shine with that fresh coat of pink.
Your tender eyes, clear and pure like a summer sky,
will never look upon my face and twinkle.
Your smile, perfect and white as untouched snow,
will never flash when I enter the room.
Your voice, soft as a celtic lullaby,
will never utter a comforting word.
Your ears, though weak as they are,
will never hear my physical cries.
_
The golds and silvers of ages past
will never adorn your pearlescent skin.
The gems and flowers that surround you
will never be more than bittersweet reminders.
The great canopy bed, covered with your mother's things,
will be empty and bland forevermore.
The rocking chair, blue and soft,
will never rock me to sleep, to and fro.
The pictures that hang upon your walls
will be empty echoes of your life.
The bells, all one hundred sixty,
will never ring beneath your fingers.
_
All these things are around me now,
but even I know the truth.
No worldy thing, near or far,
will ever amount to the real you.
And life will go on, as it always does,
even though you are no longer here,
and I will live, as you would have begged,
as if you still existed.
It will be hard, as I know it will be,
but I can live in peace,
knowing you loved me.
Though you are gone, forevermore,
I know you will be with me in my heart.
_
And so, farewell, until we meet again.
Do not wait for me before the Pearly Gates.
Enter ahead of me, oh dearest one,
and meet your father, mother, and brother,
as I know you have longed to do.
I will be here, thinking of you,
and clinging to the happy memories,
reminding myself of all the good times,
forgetting all the bad ones.
But I will not forget when I held your hand,
as you lay comatose, shattered and broken,
and you gave my hand a squeeze.
This is not goodbye - not in a million years.
This is only farewell, my dearest grandmother.

Thank you, everyone. I appreciate all the comments and consolations; they really mean a lot to me. I'm fairly over it now, but you know I'll never fully recover; I'll always miss her. I haven't even been to the grave site yet, because of how much I miss her. I cry anytime someone mentions their grandmother, nursing homes, funeral homes, or death... It doesn't help that my grandfather has now been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and prostate cancer...

Thanks again, for all your support. I truly means a lot.

I was reading through this and I kept on telling myself I wouldn't cry, however it was these lines that broke me,

But I will not forget when I held your hand,
as you lay comatose, shattered and broken,
and you gave my hand a squeeze.

Completely and utterly. :( This is sort of a revelation. I'm going to have to appreciate things more. This moment is sure to come one day to us all . . .

Beautiful, and emotional. Expressive, but not angsty. This is a very perfect farewell.

Hope you feel better soon,
Azrael.

Beautiful poem, you conveyed your emotions really well, and even got me tearing up (and that's a big deal.) I got a feel for who she was, and I could get a picture of a person. You really did a great job, this is a wonderful tribute. Now let me tell you, if you need to talk, please, please, feel free to PM me. If you need someone to talk to I'll listen, okay?

A fantastic job-- this poem aroused in me a sort of fear, as this hasn't occurred just yet but, inevitably, it will. :(
Not to turn this into a cry fest or anything, but I was too wrapped up in your poem to critique it. er... sorry? It was beautiful, in a melancholy, hopeful way. Not overtly depressing.
In other words, fantastic. Great job.
loved it,
empress

Thank you. It's just so hard, as you know, that you have to find some way to vent. I guess poems are my way... At least she's in a better place now, no longer suffering.

Beautiful. To be honest, because I could relate, it made me cry at the end. I most enjoyed the in depth descriptions, particularly the lines "Your voice, soft as a celtic lullaby" and "your great canopy bed, covered in your mother's things". Very touching, and I am truly sorry for your loss.

"its been a hot minute" no it hasn't minutes aren't hot
