Luke 12:27-31 ESV
Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

01. bulb (He provided presence)

a child doesn’t know what it means to be
unsafe, just afraid—afraid when the dogs
bark, when the siren rings, when the television
cuts to black, when mom won’t wake after
the third shake. yet, even in the somber solitude
—the pockets of time in which only I and
the earth existed—He was ever present & listening

02. grow (He provided comfort)

as I try to reach for the sun, sometimes
all I feel is burn. I scream at the rain and
curse my birth and question my pitiful existence
those quiet nights in my bedroom, I couldn't scream
but simmer in the silence and speak a prayer
and Someone heard, because the towering waves
would calm, and I rested in the comfort of something divine

03. bud (He provided truth)

overwhelming. this world has become
overwhelming, I have been overfed yet underloved
lied to by the ones who claim they will save
my soul. echo chambers. echo chambers—my voice
gets lost to the wind. everything leads me there;
His word, sweet as honey, creates constellations
in my mind that I, at last, understand to be truth—whole.

Hey cher, love how beautifully you use this series of poetry to portray what all faith can do.
The first one is definitely my favorite, since the imagery is so vivid and no one ever being truly along is such a soothing thought. The second poem talks about the sun and burning, coincidentally similiar to my poem today, it's kinda insane! I love the subtle repetition in poem three as a play at echo itself. I found the overfed but underloved line most fascinating. Honey and constellations are also some of my favorite elements to use, so they really called out to me here. Much love, keep up the coherency <3

04. bloom (He provided love)

serenade me and I might just love you back
but this love is made of sand, and the waves are
ruthless when they come. I questioned love—
mine and others—pacing, picking petals off of flowers
til I dug my own grave. then, I became reminded
of the empty one, the complete sacrifice, the perfect
display of love; humble & pure—He washes it over me.

ohhhh the first three lines of this last one..

serenade me and I might just love you back
but this love is made of sand, and the waves are
ruthless when they come

the speaker feels kinda like a wave giving / taking, wanting to be all in, and then questioning. I love where you break the lines in this poem and the complexity of the speaker's love.

You know it's good when we pick out the exact same part to mention. I think, as someone who does not claim religion, the consideration of love was most familiar to me of all the topics, but that opening imagery of waves, sand, and water mixed with love was really honest. Made me feel like we were peering back into high-school, middle school love. And now we know more, with help of someone or without.

05. wilt (He provided hope)

I’ve died a hundred times; I’ve sunk in the anticyclonic
storm of Jupiter; I’ve bowed my head; I’ve exposed the gashes
on my back; I feel nothing; I feel everything. The moon—
the moon rises and looks at me; the sun, I cannot see
but I know by looking at the moon that it has kept its word
and as the moon sets to the west, I know the sun will rise
again; like Adonai, hope dwells in the coming of every morning.

06. rest (He provided promise)

I look for signs everywhere I go—the red cardinal that
reminds me of my grandma, the early melody it sings
even the direction in which the wind blows, I discern it
I wonder what use there is, looking for these things, my
wandering eyes, tired and clouded—I look to the rainbows
and the seas, the water waning on the shore, and the doves
that fly by His will. Lord, my Lord, remind me of your promises.

07. perennial (He provided eternity)

There is something beyond this life, this universe, beyond
me and you. this life is a breath’s length of time, a single hour
on the grandfather clock, a rainstorm and then it’s all gone
time feels as though it could, as though it will, swallow me
up whole, and dust is all I will be. yet I know that even as
I lay in the ground, my soul will be rooted with Him evermore—
consider the lilies, and how He blooms them year after year.

Thank you, Lord. My precious rock and my salvation. May these words be for Your glory, and not my own.

More than anything she wanted the world to be uncomplicated, for right and wrong to be as easily divided as the black and white sections of an Oreo. But the world was not a cookie.
