I love the idea of closing the poem with it's title / reveal. The Romeo / Rose poem especially I found interesting to read through the end. Nice painting too!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

@alliyah - Thank you! I was inspired by a poetry novel I read before NaPo started to get some inspo on writing a poetry novel, if that makes sense ^^ I'm glad you like the romeo/rose poem, it's also one of my favourites until now XD Thank you for stopping by!

Shakespearean Sonnet

Image

text version
Spoiler
Shall i look at thee from another eye?
thou art so honest and thy heart so true
it shaketh me hard to say goodbye
i only look to thee, though i feel blue
thou stands taller than dimm’d greens
sadly my feet can only reach so high
the trail of thy kisses are thirteens
and wicked eyes do watch as thy walks by
how i wish, dear love, that thou wast mine,
we can dance through the night till our feet art sore
as i wait just to see thy face by the bus line
then close my heart to dream of thee once more
but what know i of sonnets or old rhyme?
i ain’t no Shakespeare – but i still write in time

Inspired by Sonnet 18

steal me

i don’t want this anymore
i’m tired of pretending
i’m done listening to my past

so please…
steal me away
i can’t take this anymore

i want to be loved
i want to mean something
to someone
to you

i want to believe in love

steal me
take me somewhere the world can’t touch us
i’ll go without looking back

but you stop
you look at me like i’m everything--
and say:

“i won’t steal you”
“i want to deserve you”

and somehow that hurts more
because it’s real
because you see me,
not as something to escape with
but as something worth staying for

you don’t run
you stay
you fight for love the way others run from it

and so i wait
not to be taken
but to be chosen
to be loved the way you love

slow. real. all in.

wait for me,
not because you have to
but because you want to
and when i come to you
we won’t be running
you won’t be stolen

because i will come
and when i do
i will take you away

i promise

love, yours

how can a father make his son choose,
between his lover or his daughter

how can a father disown his son,
only because he fell in love

how can a father make his son hurt
for someone that wasn’t his fault

how can a father, who's supposed to protect
pull the trigger

how can a father look away,
while his son cries alone

how can a father make his son feel
like love is a crime for which one must suffer

how can a father stand tall
while breaking the one thing he swore to keep safe

how can a father, who once held his son’s hand,
push the key in the lock and close the door

how can a father forget the child he once held in his arms, so easily,
that his son doesn’t even recognise the word “father”

how can a father, who once promised forever,
tear apart the only love his son ever knew

- how can a father love so much that he sacrificed it all without thinking twice (for his only daughter whom he barely knew)?

for context
Spoiler
the father in the title is the son, (who became a father to a daughter) and the father in the poem is the father to the son.

i’m the light of your life, you say,
but why do you reach for the lighter,
so quick,
i’m not even out of reach yet?
you see,
that’s where you’re wrong, baby

- i’m the smoke suffocating you

its in the blood

Check out this link for the visual poem - sorry for the long intro

() = deceased

family tree
Michelle + Larkin = (Harper)
(Skyla) + Robert = (Theo) & Luna
(Harper) + (Theo) = Scarlett

- - - - -

Larkin + (Skyla)

Once there were two lovers,
he was the laidback popular guy who everyone adored,
she was the shy daughter of their high school principal,
it was just meant to be
but then a terrible incident, led to divorce
and then the only thing they wished for was;
“if only we had spoken up”

Michelle + Larkin

he married the woman who served him alcohol to drown his sorrows, to forget her.

(Skyla) + Robert

she married the man who tried to be there for her, while she was only thinking of him.

Michelle + Larkin = (Harper)

he was blessed with a daughter who had his nature and looked everything like him,
this reminded him of everything he was to
her,
he decided to give his daughter the name they were going to give their daughter, if they would ever be blessed with one

(Skyla) + Robert = (Theo) & Luna

she was blessed with a son who had her nature and looked nothing like
him,
this reminded her of everything he was to her,
she decided to give her son the name they were going to give their son, if they would ever be blessed with one, little did she know, she would not live long enough to see him live up to his name.

(Harper) + (Theo)

Once more there were two lovers,
she was the fierce popular girl,
he was the shy guy and read books under trees,
it was just meant to be
but then a terrible incident, led to their end.
and then the only thing they wished for was;
“if only we had stayed silent”

(Harper) + (Theo) = Scarlett

Once again there was a girl,
daughter of a fierce girl and a shy guy,
granddaughter of a popular guy and a shy girl,
she wanted nothing to do with her history of unfortunate lovers.

Scarlett

and thus she is incomplete, and so is her story...

he leans on my desk,
third time this week
same look,
same grin,
same question:

“can i take you out?”
he asks, again
like today’s the day
i’ll say yes
and screw all my rules

i don’t look up
i never do

“no,” i say,
no drama, no sigh
just… no
and then i realised
what i’d just done

he freezes
then laughs

“you said no,” he says,
eyes wide like i sang it
“usually i get silence
maybe a sigh if i’m lucky”

i shrug,
but he’s already talking to the ceiling
like we’re in a romcom

“she speaks,” he says
“my life is complete”

then he winks
and whispers
close to my ear,
a little too close:

“next time, maybe a maybe

i roll my eyes
but i’m smiling,
and of course,
he sees

as he leaves the room,
“at least i got you to smile,
some would say that’s progress”
(some being him)

i pretend not to watch him go
pretend too hard

- damn, what has this boy done to me?

why can’t you write nice things?
you always go on and on about tragedies
and how life gets in the way of
what you really desire and wish to do,
why can’t you just rhyme and dream?

- yeah, that’s not how poetry works

i know Luna hates going to your place,
i know she’s never going to forgive you,
even if that’s what she wants deep in her heart

but i need to know,
i need to know if you really stopped loving her,
1) her as in my mother
2) her as in Harper
3) her as in your daughter

i need to know,
if she stopped loving you in that last minute,
the minute where you became the monster she had to run from

i need to know,
if you hate me
if you hate her
if you hate my father

i need to know
if you’re sorry for being the reason
that you had to outlive your daughter
if you’re wishing you can turn back time
1) to do it all over again
2) to do it differently

if you ever stopped thinking about your first love?
(not my mother’s mother, but the one you wished was her mother)

- a letter for Larkin, my mother’s father

PS: i can’t call you grandpa just yet,
i need to know first.

Woah love the experiments with the visual poems! I really enjoy making poems + videos on canva, so loved seeing your work with that, and the progressive counting / clock made that poem feel more filled with anticipation to me as the details circled around, perfect poem to be represented with a visual element like that.

Your poem "in the blood" was also SUPER creative! What a great blend of story / character / poetry! Keep this awesome creativity going, I love it!

only because i’m tired
doesn’t mean that i gave up

^^ I feel that one!! Simple but, YES!
you should know i am a time traveler &

but i have promised to return

Alliyah - I was actually inspired by you to make visual poems XD So I'm very honoured that you like them.

The clock: Yes, I had a lot of fun making this one!
in the blood: I really loved writing this one ^^
I'm glad you liked the two-liner too!

Thank you so much for dropping by!
