I pull into the house and find Nic in their bedroom, a suitcase on his bed. He's sitting on the floor beneath the window, holding his head in his hands.
"Nic... what are you doing?" I ask, crouching beside him, "Your little boy is here. Come see him."
"She doesn't - "
"They asked me to come for you," I interrupt, "Worry about everything later."
I'm never what I like I'm double sided And I just can't hide I kind of like it When I make you cry 'Cause I'm twisted up, twisted up Inside
Nic looks at Jackie, trying to suppress his worry, and swallows before looking back at Renn. He walks back towards her and sets his son in her arms, backing up to bolt again.
"I...When you're better," he says, "I-I'll be back then."
I let him go, for once understanding. He doesn't want to stress her anymore.
I'm never what I like I'm double sided And I just can't hide I kind of like it When I make you cry 'Cause I'm twisted up, twisted up Inside
'They are afraid of nothing,' I grumbled, watching their approach through the window. 'Together, they would brave Satan and all his legions.' — Emily Bronte, Wuthering Heights
