He sits me on his lap and breaks the kiss, my eyes still closed. He assures me that nothing will ever change and sets his head on my shoulder. As if on cue, the side of my face presses against his head.
"I know," I say, and I did now.
I'm never what I like I'm double sided And I just can't hide I kind of like it When I make you cry 'Cause I'm twisted up, twisted up Inside
I laid down on my back and stroked his own as I held him, letting him rest on top of me. I kiss his cheek and felt at ease, falling asleep. I didn't mind having a little catnap, as long as there wasn't anyone at the door. What kept me lulled to sleep was the steady beating of Allan's heart, hearing it beat in a steady pace that sounded much like a soft and slow lullaby. I couldn't help but listen to his heart, letting it put me to sleep like I was an infant hearing a lullaby sung by his mother.

He lays down and strokes my back, kissing my cheek before closing his eyes. He falls asleep and I soon follow suit, not wanting to leave his presence. My stomach cramps up and I wake, realizing I hadn't eaten yet. Knowing he wouldn't want me to just shrug it off, I slip out of his grip without waking him and silently make myself something to eat. After the snack, I slip back in his arms and close my eyes, content.

I continued to listen to the lullaby that was his heart beating as I took a nap. Just hearing his heart made me sleepy. I couldn't help but listen. It was a heartbeat I once had during my life as a mortal, a heart rate that tells all one was living. While listening, I began to dream. Just like the dream before the prison incident. Him and myself, alone in a country home. I held him lovingly and kindly, finding comfort in his presence and sanctuary in his arms.

For how long were we asleep, I wasn't sure. When I woke up from my nap, I heard someone knocking on the door. Allan was still napping himself, so I set him on the couch and put a blanket over him to let him sleep. I answered the door. It was Silver. "Now what?" Silver stood tall in front of me. "Allan's father's back. I get the feeling he wants a word with you alone." I didn't move from my spot. "I'm not leaving Allan here. If his father wants to talk with me, Allan comes with me." Silver planted something inside my vest. "That's so Allan can listen in on the conversation." She snuck to Allan and planted a small object in his ear. "That way he can listen without being there." She pushed me out the door and towards that of her apartment. "I know your place is sacred ground, so Allan's father's in my apartment. I'm not getting involved." She left me in the hallway. I went in Silver's apartment and sat opposite of Allan's father at the table. "I heard you wanted a word with me."

I decided to confess first. "As you know, I'm a vampire. However, it wasn't my choice to be like this. It wasn't. It was forced onto me when I was just the same age as Allan. The one who made me like this killed my sisters after abducting me. After making me a vampire, the one who did it to me committed suicide after instructing me to kill my parents. I couldn't kill my parents. Even though they and I weren't at the best of terms, I still loved them. I was hunted down like an animal after my parents saw me as a vampire. I had to fake my own death to stop the guards from killing me. After that, I served my parents as a talented potter until they were at their sickbed. It was then I told them I was alive and forgave them for what they did."

I listen as he tells my father the same story he told me, looking down. I wait, anxiously, for a response. When there isn't one, I don't know what to do.

I continued with my age-old story. "I have made another of my kind, but he died the same way my maker had. For centuries since I left Egypt, I've been employed by the higher class of society to create pottery. Most of the time, I was paid in gold, but other times my payment was jewels. Nonetheless, I slowly made a rather large fortune out of an honest living as a potter. During those times, I was alone and had no one else to care for. After that, I was beginning to starve and needed someone to sustain me. "It was two centuries and four decades ago when I was found by a set of twins all vampires call the Bloodlust Twins. They took me in so I could recover, but the twin called Sheila wanted me to stay. She offered Celeste as a last attempt to woo me into staying, but I knew better. Sheila and her twin Carlos kept themselves going by feeding and killing infants. That was a fate I didn't want Celeste's baby to suffer. Knowing that Celeste was with child, I had to free her against Carlos' wishes so her child would live. Carlos and Sheila kicked me out of their house and vowed revenge on me for my act of humanity. I've been back on the road ever since. "I was starving again the night I found Allan. He and two other boys were in a garden that night. I was starving so much, I had to feed from the other boys. I spared Allan because I was sane enough to claim him as my bloodslave. He and I have been together for almost five months now. I myself don't feel like releasing him because I'd starve without him and know that he's grown to trust me. I'd never hurt him. I'm not as heartless as Carlos was. I still have my mortal emotions, which means I could love or feel other emotions like a mortal could."

I didn't bother lying about it. I knew Allan was listening, so it was time he knew. "Some, but not all of them. I trust him to keep my existance a secret from other mortals and I've grown to love him as he is. During his first two months in my care, I've often watched him sleep every night while I was awake. I always let him eat and drink what was good for his health. I cared for him like a father would his child. I loved him, cared for him, and did my hardest to protect him from other vampires who were bent on stealing him from me. "Carlos and Sheila wanted to take Allan from me after they heard about the prison incident and took the case to the vampire Queen. If I were found guilty by the Queen and the Council, I would've lost Allan to Sheila. Their revenge was to take Allan from me for freeing Celeste long ago. When the Council found me not guilty, the Bloodlust Twins were still bent on taking their revenge. The night you and your wife came was the night I fought against the Bloodlust Twins and killed them. You saw me when I came back minutes after I left. Those claw marks were from Sheila's fingernails. The end of the Bloodlust Twins was my way of avenging all those infants they've killed all their immortal lifetimes."

I shrugged. "The Bloodlust Twins were quite notorious for feeding off and killing infants. Killing infants was against the Queen's most strictest law. Like myself, the Queen values the lives of mortals. Infants are the peak of innocence and the Queen made killing innocent mortals a highly forbidden act. She's only two centuries older than I am, but as Queen her laws are to be obeyed. Killing an innocent mortal, such as a newborn infant, results in death. Because I killed the Bloodlust Twins, the infants of the earth are safe. "Before you think I kill infants, let me tell you what blood I feed on. I only feed on the blood of men. I never feed on women or children. My diet forbids the blood of women and children. I keep myself within the range of the Queen's laws. I feed on those who do wrong to others. Allan is an exception to the matter. Although he's as innocent as an infant, I feed on him because his blood keeps me going. I can't kill your wife because of my diet and I can't kill you either because you remind me of Celeste."
