Lire Else

I gathered around the impossibly tall man without hesitation. I didn't care if my life was on the line, as long as there was a way that I could get money for Roman I'd do anything.

"Well, who's ready?" I look up at the man who spoke and give him a small smirk. A girl answers his question steadily and I feel a sense of will in her, strong will. I immediately like her.

"Ready? To almost die?" I say this with a certain type of sarcasm. "Of course, I'm so excited." He laughs airily and I nod. It's then that I catch sight of a leash in his hand and I curiously follow it to see it's attached to a collar on another man's neck I sputter and stumble back, a hard frown on my face.

"Now that's just wrong," I hiss lowly. "Why the hell is that man on a leash?" The man that spoke first just laughs louder and settles a hand on the leashed man's head.

"For your safety and the safety of others."

"London isn't even awake right now, Dill," the leashed man mumbles.

"You know anything can set him off, Ten," Dill replies. The leashed boy, Ten, just huffs and looks at the ground.

"Well," the tall man states, "if everyone's ready, please follow me into the back."

I followed him down a hall and into a dark study silently. No one else was talking either, it was eerily quiet. We all stood in front of what seemed to be a desk and waited.

"Thank you, John," calls a voice from the darkness. The man, John, mutters a soft reply and leaves us alone in the room with the strange voice. Silence.

"Enough with the dramatics, Alfr," that man, Dill, speaks. "And turn up the lights, would you. Ten's getting antsy."

The voice laughs heartily and claps twice, turning the lights on.

"What a pleasure," Alfr laughs, "I didn't think you would respond." Dill rolls his eyes and leans against the wall.

"I didn't want to," he sighs, "but Ten insisted."

"I want to play," Ten said happily. The others in the room shifted awkwardly.

"What's going on," one girl demanded. Another girl was perched at her side. I assume her to be a sister of some sort. The others in the room mumbled agreements.

"In due time," Alfr started, "but first..." He pulls out a small bag and hands us all a piece of paper. I opened mine and read the words 'Bow and Arrow'. Well, what?

"You will be transported to a disclosed location and forced to fight for your life against another team," Alfr finally explains. "Along with the opposite team trying to kill you, there will also be wildlife at this location. If you die, oh well, and if you don't, you will be rewarded. All members of the opposite team must be killed before any members of your team can be rewarded. Goodbye, and good luck."

I open my mouth to ask a question but John comes back and ushers us all out and back to the living area, which is now emptied.

"Please wait here until transportation arrives. Help yourself to anything you'd like." He leaves with a small bow, and I stare after him.

"Well, this should be interesting," I speak up, breaking the silence. "Well, umm, I'm Lire. Figured you should know as much as my name if we're going to be fighting for out lives together." I give a warm smile to try and break the tension in the room.

Effy Culpepper

We all followed Alfr into another room, and he handed us these piece of paper. I opened mine up, and it said daggers. I stashed the piece of paper in my jacket pocket and crossed my arms.

"You will be transported to a disclosed location and forced to fight for your life against another team," Alfr explained. "Along with the opposite team trying to kill you, there will also be wildlife at this location. If you die, oh well, and if you don't, you will be rewarded. All members of the opposite team must be killed before any members of your team can be rewarded. Goodbye, and good luck."

My eyebrow shot up when I heard this. If you die, oh well? That's a nice comment. John came back and directed us back into the living room, and he instructed us to wait for some sort of transportation. I sat down on a couch and crossed my legs.

"Well, this should be interesting," a woman said. "Well, umm, I'm Lire. Figured you should know as much as my name if we're going to be fighting for our lives together." She smiled at us, and I rolled my eyes.

I lit up my cigarette and walked up to Lire. I brought the cigarette to my lips and let out a puff of smoke, right in front of her. She coughed and fanned the smoke away.

"Effy," I simply said. I brought the cigarette back to my lips and let out another puff of smoke and sat back down in my original spot.

"Nadia." I said simply. Looking around again, wary and curious. The two girls had already introduced themselves, Lire and Effy. The Effy-girl got up, blowing a puff of smoke into the face of the other girl.

"Is that you master plan? Give us all Lung cancer then you win by default when everyone is rotting away in a hospital somewhere?" I asked tilting my head quaintly and raising my eyebrows. I flashed her a quick and cool smile and then turned back to the rest of the group. The man on the leash frightened me a little but I was interested. Very much so. I let my eyes remain on him for a moment before turning away.

I stuck out my hand for anyone to shake. Calculated movements. I wanted them to like me. I wanted them to want to protect me but I wanted them to know of my confidence. We would all be competing against each other after all. I let my hand rotate around the group. Waiting for some one to take it. I let out a small laugh at my own actions.

*Mason & Seph*

"Invitations." The man at the door growled, holding out a ghastly white hand. Mason slapped their invitations in his hand and sneered at him, resting her right hand on her sword.

"May we go in?" Seph asked, every so polite. The man grunted and opened the door.

"Thanks." Mason said sarcasticaly. She took Seph's arm and yanked her close, eyeing the rest of the people warily.

"You're late." A tall man scoffed at them, wagging a long finger.

"You're abnormally tall." Mason retorted, strolling over to the group, ignoring the stares.

"Sorry!" Seph had bumped into a guy with a collar. He smiled slightly. "It's cool. I'm Ten, and this is Dill."

"Hello." Seph smiled at Dill. He nodded curtly.

"I'm Persephone, and this is Mason." Mason raised her eyebrows in greeting.

"Mason. What a nusual name for a female." Dill noted, a mischeiveous smirk displayed on his face.

"It's better than Dill." Mason snapped.

"Touche." Dill nodded slightly.

Seph had moved closer to Ten, and there were laughing and chatting like the best of buds. Mason watched her sister cautiously, her hand restig on her sword still. She'd kill them both before she let them harm Seph.

I coolly looked around the room, not meeting anyone's eyes and not letting anyone meet mine. I wanted them to think of me as innocent; I bent my head down lower.

A man came and took each of us out of the room, one by one. I was one of the first.

"You now know about how this will work. You will be brought to a different location and you will eventually find your team. With your team you will fight for your life. As you also know that there is wildlife that can kill you. Good luck."

Nice guy. I thought, smirking, as he walked out of the room.

Since he'd let me keep my belongings I was happy and content to stay where I was. He probably didn't want me going anywhere anyways since he'd locked me in. I surveyed 'my' room.
It was small but clean and mostly a pale cream color with dark brown trimmings and such. There was a small, twin bed and a door that I found led to a bathroom with a toilet, sink, mirror, and shower. In my room there was another mirror above a dark brown wood dresser.

I wondered what would happen next.

Effy Culpepper

My eyebrow shot up as I listened to the red-head. I crossed my legs and let out another puff of smoke. She was interesting, and confident. She stuck out her hand, and began rotating it, welcoming people to shake it. She went on like this for a few minutes, and I rolled my eyes and stood up to shake her hand.

"For God's sake," I muttered. I shook her hand, and sat back down.

I crushed the end of my cigarette against my combat boots, and stashed the cigarette in my bag. I looked away and ran a hand through my hair. A man came and escorted me outside and directed me towards my room. I stepped inside, listening to the clicks of my boots.

"You now know about how this will work. You will be brought to a different location and you will eventually find your team. With your team you will fight for your life. As you also know that there is wildlife that can kill you. Good luck," he said before leaving. I threw my bag on the bed and sat down.

What if I do die? I thought. Then what? I wouldn't have the pride I wanted, and Wen would be crushed. Shit.

I exhaled and crossed my legs. I stretched my arms out and looked into the mirror. I blinked at my reflection, looking at how I looked. What is with me and dark eyes? I combed my hair with my fingers and sighed. No. I'm not going to die. I'm going to win.

Mavrick Lock

Mavrick shrugged self consious in his suit. Glancing around the room he appraised the people around him. Judging by the majority of their appearance he was fairly sure most of them were here for the money. Also most of them had at least some sort of pack or bag and Mavrick wished he'd had time to pick up a few things before coming here.

Though only a few words had been spoken, most of the contestants had been throwing looks at each other. Mavrick watch most of these exchanges with amusement.

The time to leave or stay had come and gone and now everyone was going to receive their slip of paper. As Mavrick when up to get his, he caught glimsp of the writing on one of the girls small piece of paper.

Twin pistols.

Ahh, Mavrick thought understanding dawning. They're asigning us to weapons. With eager anticipation he stepped forward and took his slip, he unfolded it and his excitement was promptly snuffed out. A morning star? He barly knew what that was, let alone how to use it. Perhaps now was the time to speak up.

"Not to be rude or anything," Mavrick's tone was sarcastic as he addressed Alfr, and he could feel the eyes of the others on him. "but don't you think these weapons are a little unevenly matched? I'm mean she gets two guns," He gestured to the girl who's note he'd seen. "and I end up with some crappy spiked club." Several other contestants were nodding. "It like putting a cave man against Calamity Jane. One bullet and old cave boy is dead. And all I'm wondering is, whats the logic behind it?"

Everyones gaze fell on Alfr, waiting for his answer.

Micah Tallow,

After being admitted into the large house and listening to the man called Alfr's short speech about fighting to the death, fame, fortune, etc., etc., I look down at the piece of paper I was given:

Twin Long Swords

I grin. Two step ahead of you, buddy, I think. I look up and observe the rest of what I suppose is now my team. Battling my intense desire to socialize, I sit back and observe the actions of the others. Most are fairly young. Two sisters, the guy called Dill with the other guy on the leash, and several other young men and women who I don't know anything about yet. I sigh and blow my hair out of my eyes. None of us look like killers. I lean down and pull my knife from my boot sheath, pull a bit of wood from my trench coat, and start whittling. I'm almost done with the mouthpiece of the flute that I'm carving when a man, I think his name is Maverick or something, speaks up, complaining about the distinct advantage a pistoleer has over a knife-thrower. I roll my eyes, cock my knife, and throw it at the guy. The knife swishes past, within an inch from his face, and lodges in the wall behind him. Everyone looks at me.

"Knives are just as deadly as bullets," I say, somewhat awkwardly, "You just have to use them right..."

No one says anything. I go red, "Ummm, sorry. Didn't mean to almost cut your nose off. Kind of surprising that I didn't, though...I've never been much good at throwing knives."

So saying, I walk over and pull my knife out of the wall and begin to whittle again.
And remember...A portkey can be any sort of harmless object...A football...or a dolphin.

Ten Sauna

I yelped excitedly as the knife flew across the room and followed it intently with my eyes, silently hoping it would hit. But it just lodged into a wall and I instantly loss interest. With a heavy sigh I turned back to the girl in front of me and smiled widely at her. She said her name was Persephone. I liked Persephone, she actually talked to me. She was actually in the middle of talking right now, I don't know about what exactly because, honestly, I wasn't really listening.

I took a step closer to her and sniffed the air by her idly. She didn't notice, and neither did Dill since he was talking it up with some girls - I think one of them was that Lire girl from earlier and the other was Seph's sister. I took another small step forward and Seph just smiled at me.

I've never tasted a nice person before.

I know, London. I know you haven't. I engulfed her in a hug. She was surprised by my actions, even I was surprised, but it made sense that London would want to be closer to her. London nuzzled her neck and the girl was trying to get away, I could feel her pushing against him. I yelled out for London to stop, I actually didn't want to hurt Seph, I actually liked her, but it was too late and London bit down. She screamed.

He didn't bite really hard, barely even broke skin, but the girl started wailing at the top of her lungs.

"London," Dill screamed with a hard tug on the leash. "Sit! Sit!" London retreated and left me sitting on the floor to take the blame all by myself.

"What the hell is your problem," Seph's sister yelled, advancing on me with a sword. I covered my face and moved so that I was kneeling beside Dill. He ran a hand through my hair and I whimpered. The girl, Mason I think, was still yelling.

"I'm sorry, Dill," I mumbled. He shushed me and held a hand up to keep Mason from killing me.

"Stop," Dill ordered. "It's not his fault!"

"Not his fault?!"

"I'm sorry," I spoke up, talking mostly to Seph, who was cowering behind Mason and holding her neck. "London is tricky sometimes and I didn't mean to let him on you..."

"What the heck are you talking about," Mason yelled. She advanced on me again and Dill pushed her back gently.

"Stop," he barked. "It's not Ten's fault! And Ten," he looked down at me and I had to look him back in the eye, his eyes actually made me scared then, "please try not to eat your teammates."

I sighed and nodded. Mason was still glaring down at me and Seph wouldn't even look my way.

"The car has arrived." Everyone looked up towards John, who seemed to come from nowhere. Dill quickly ushered me outside and we got into the car - which was actually a limousine. Everyone else filled in after us and I cleared my throat and licked away Seph's blood from the corner of my mouth.

"I'm sorry," I mumbled.

Lire Else

I starred wide eyed in horror at the backs of Dill and Ten as they walked outside.

"Oh my God," I muttered. "So that's what the leash is for... It makes sense now..." The rest of the group were mumbling things along the line of "what the hell is wrong with that man" and "holy shit". I walked over to Seph, where people were crowding around her. She had tears leaking out the corner of her eyes. I hugged her softly and stood back, looking her in the eye to catch her attention.

"In Ten's defense," I started. Mason cut me off with a hard shove.

"His defense?!"

"He did apologize," I snapped back. "And he looked sorry."

"He bit her," that Effy girl stated with a scoff.

"Yeah, that was a bit, umm..." Micah didn't finish his sentence and just shook his head. That Maverick guy Nadia were shaking their heads also.

"There's obviously something wrong with him," I shot back. "Yeah, he did bite her but maybe he doesn't have control over things like that. It's obvious he's not right in the head!"

"Then why is he here," Mason challenged. I shrugged and turned to walk out the door.

"Because he wants to play too," I called over my shoulder. "And being mean to him probably won't ensure your safety, Mason." I ran a hand through my hair and walked outside and into the back of the limo. Dill and Ten were sitting in the corner, Dill was patting the top of Ten's head in a soothing manner. It was actually a sweet scene, if you ignored the leash and collar.

"Hey," I whispered softly, "how are you?"

"He's fine," Dill answered for him, a hard frown still on his face. "Just a bit ruffled." I smiled nicely and sat back as everyone else entered.

"I'm sorry," Ten said lowly.

"Oh, it's fine, honey," I replied. Mason scoffed loudly and threw a glare at Ten. I rolled my eyes at her and sat back in my seat. This was sure to be a ride.

*Mason & Seph*

Mason wrapped her arms tightly around Seph. "Are you okay?"

"Yes." Seph whispered.

"You have your daggers for a reason! Why didn't you kill him?" Mason growled staring sternly at her sister.

Seph glanced at Ten, who seemed to be licking his lips. She shuddered. "He has a... 'problem', that's what Dill said."

"I don't give a flying fuck what Dill said!" She sneered his name. "You stay away from them!"

Before Seph could answer, a man handed them both a piece of paper. Mason's:Twin Daggers, Seph's:Sword.

Mason and Seph quickly traded papers, laughing quietly.

"Your limo is here." A man announced to the room. The girls walked outside and got in the car. Seph broke free of Mason and sat across from Ten.

"Persephone!" Mason hissed, having no choice but to sit by her.

"Who is London?" She asked Dill.

Micah,

"Your limousine is here," the tall man says, and we all troupe out to find seats in the sleek, posh vehicle. Everyone seems to be pretty much ignoring me, and I sit next to the girl who's name I think is Effy. I offer my hand to shake.

"Hi, I'm Micah," I say congenially, "You're Effy, right?"

She gives a small smile, "Yeah, that's my name." She has a slight British accent.

I pull out my half finished flute and continue carving, "So why exactly are you risking your life?"

She looks a little affronted, so I say hastily, "You don't have to answer that, sorry. I'm just curious, but it's not important...In case you're wondering, though I'm sure you're not, I'm in for the fame. Maybe then whoever my next foster family is will give me a little respect rather than treating me like shit," I finish bitterly.
