"But I'm not sure I trust Dill. I mean, I know he's an asshole, but I didn't expect this..."

I nod. "I didn't know he could be so bossy. Everyone at home was always so nice."

There was silence for a few seconds while I tried to contain what I knew was coming. I knew I'd made a mistake, I shouldn't have come. I missed my parents and my friends and now the only way out was to start killing.

I stiffened, "Did you just hear that? It sounded like someone yelling."

"Yeah, I thought I just heard something." Said Micah, standing up.

I followed her lead and stood, then listened again. Another shout.

"it sounds like it's coming from the campfire," I said. "Should we go take a look?"

"Yeah." Micah started running towards where the campfire was.

Well, even though I'd seemed to take over guard duty I guessed I should go too. Who knew what was happening?

I ran through the few trees that separated me from the campfire then stopped. There was a huge boar attacking Lire and the boy who seemed to follow her. Her boyfriend, or something, I guess. Everybody else in the camp was waking up from all the noise. I hoped the boy on the leash, Ten, didn't do anything...

Dill Rivanni - (Okay, I just had to do this! Don't be mad at me about the bag...)

I walked away from Lire and Mavrick with a small goodbye and went to where I knew Ten was. He was sleeping next to the campfire and I wanted so bad to join him, I too was sleepy, but I had to bury this bag first.

I don't know how John managed to convince Alfr to let me have this, but he came through for me. I walk around aimlessly on the beach for a few minutes before finding a secluded enough spot and digging a small hole where I could stash the bag. I didn't want anyone finding out, not until it was absolutely imperative that I use what was in the bag. Hopefully I would never have to take it out but you never know, things happen.

After burying the bag and making the sand look fairly normal again I run off back towards camp and slip in quietly next to Ten, already half asleep before my head hits the ground.

* * *

The sound of yelling and screaming wakes me up and, to be honest, I'm not all too happy about. I look over lazily and notice that Ten is still asleep, which is good, he needs his rest. I sit up groggily and frown when I realize it's still dark out. The kids are still screaming and it doesn't register that we might be getting attacked until a long five seconds later when the sleep clears from my head. Quickly I jump out and pull my gun from a holster on my side. I run out to the front, looking around frantically for the guy I need to shoot, when I notice the boar. I can't help but to laugh.

I shoot the boar cleanly in the head and continue to laugh. The kids turn and give me puzzling looks.

"If you all can't kill something as simple as a boar then, to be frank, you're fucking screwed." I'm laughing again and can barely make out someone saying that Mavrick was hurt. Okay, so that wasn't so funny. I stop laughing instantly and frown, walking up to where Mavrick was kneeling on the ground, blood covering his calf.

"It got you?"

"I wasn't looking," he replied quickly. I scoff and get up to take a bow out of the calf's dead body and use the end of it to rip a strip off my shirt. I kneel back down beside Mavrick and wrap his calf tightly with the strip.

"You should always be looking. That's no excuse." I finish tying off the makeshift bandage and dust my hands off on my jeans. "There, it's not too bad, nothing fatal. Can you stand?" I stand up and hold out my hand for him. He takes it and seems to be standing fine. "Now, can you walk?" He does, but has a slight limp. I smile at him and nod. "Good. At least you're not a whiner." I turn away from Mavrick, who seemed to be getting along fine with his injury. I was impressed, actually, at least I know we have one fighter. Next item to deal with, the boar.

"We should probably get this thing skinned and cooked. Don't want good meat going to waste. Since I'm already awake I can do it myself. Anyone have a knife?"

I woke up to the sound of faint screaming. To think people can have respect for people sleeping. Apparently they don't know that a person can be very... cranky. I sood up and scratched my head and began walking back to camp. I saw Marvick on the ground with a blood covered leg.

"Anyone have a knife?" I heard Dill ask. I pulled out my dagger and tossed it to him. He caught the handle and gave me a stern glare.

"Be careful!" he instructed. I rolled my eyes.

"What the fuck happened?" I asked groggily. "Something attack? Already?"

"A boar," Marvick simply answered. I crossed my arms and tried my best to stay awake.

Nadia

I sat up quickly and looked around, many others were sitting up and I was grumpy. Some loud noise had woken me up and I wasn't in the mood to be awake just yet. How much sleep had I gotten? Two hours? I stood slowly trying to ignore the kink already forming in my back.

"Can any one tell me what is happening?" I snapped. The scream came again and there was a kind of... growl that came with it. A fight some where but I didn't think it was with a human. Was some one getting food or had an animal just attacked us. I bent down and pulled one of the daggers out of my boot, looking at how small it was. I would have to hit some thing square between the eyes or in the back of the head to do much damage. And it wouldn't be much use against an animal.

But what ever, I still gripped it tighter but stayed in the group. I would help if some one asked, I would help if some one called for it from the woods. But why get myself killed by some animal on the first night?

The sound of a shot rang through the air and I jumped. Running towards the sound, holding the knife tightly. In the woods was Dill, Mavrick and a boar, lying dead on the ground.

"If you all can't kill something as simple as a boar then, to be frank, you're fucking screwed." He said laughing, laughing at us. I boiled over. I was tired and I was small and some people wanted to keep themselves alive and were not fortunate enough to get a gun as out weapon.

"You talk to us like we are kids. I assure you I have had plenty of time to grow up." I growled stalking up towards the men standing over the dead animal. I felt my face growing almost as red as my hair as I clenched my fist, I was pretty sure my nails and punctured my skin a little but it was letting out my anger in another way besides smacking this..Dill. So powerful and mighty.

Micah,

The boar is dead, shot by Dill. I gotta hand it to the guy, he's a good shot. But that's not what I'm thinking about. I'm thinking about the mysterious bag he got from John and the condescension with which he his treating all of us. What, does he expect to all be, like, super-trained, boar-slaughtering killers? Well, maybe. And some of us do have pretty shady pasts. But that's not the point. We're all in this together, and he's acting like it's all about him. I notice Nadia standing not to far off. She's fuming, glaring at Dill. I walk over to her.

"I know how you feel," I say in a low voice, "He's a fucking asshole. And more than that, he's hiding something."

Nadia nods, still red in the face. She angrily blows a wisp of hair out of her eyes, "I can't stand him. He's always acting like he knows better than us, that he can do whatever he wants. Well, I've had it," She narrows her eyes.

I nod as well, "It's only a matter of time before we all turn on each other, if he keeps this up."

Lire Else

After Dill wrapped Mavrick's ankle I quickly ran up to him and helped him back to the shelter so he could sit down.

"You okay?" He stuck out his injured leg and my hands hovered over the bandages, worried but afraid to touch. He chuckled lowly and I whipped my head up to glare at him. "Right, because you getting hurt is hilarious." I fold my arms and sit back against the stone wall. He chuckles again and nudges my arm to get attention.

"No, not laughing at the injury. I'm laughing at you."

"Me? Why?"

"You're so worried. It's fine. I'm fine." I scoff and turn away and saw Dill talking to Nadia. Nadia actually looked a bit angry. "Everyone's so mad at that Dill guy. I feel sorry for him."

Mavrick scoffs at my comment and I turn back to him.

"Trust me, that guy can take care of himself. He obviously knows something we don't know. And that bag..."

"I wonder what's in it." Mavrick shrugs and tries to stand but it only amounts in him wincing and sitting back down.

"Hey, are you okay? What's wrong? Is it hurt?" He laughs again but this time I blush and stand up. I turn my head away and hold out my hand. He takes it and pulls himself up.

"Thanks."

"You're welcome." We stand their awkwardly for three seconds too long so I start forward slowly.

"So, later?" He waves goodbye and I turn to go inside.

I lean back towards Micah and nod angrily. Nibbling on my bottom lip I try and keep another nasty comment from slipping out. He could probably crush me if he wanted to. Dill that is.

"I wonder if he would be mad if I just...took a leap onto his back or something. Like a little spider monkey. It would be amusing to see how he got me off." I said quietly to Micah. The man fighting the boar had done well, I thought. For only having a knife and not wanting to take any stupid chances. I sighed again heavily. Patting my hair absently. It was probably filled with dirt.

"How's my hair? Filthy right?" I asked smiling. It wouldn't take long before we were all fighting each other, but even sooner we would all start to look like island natives. I wondered how bad of a sunburn my fair, almost white skin would acquire. I hardly ever tanned and it would be even more fun fighting when every move hurt. But I was here for the money. And I would fight. Even if the big boss man Dill continued to ignore me, or simply forget my presence.

Micah,

Nadia's preoccupation with her hair is so funny when juxtaposed with our current situation, that I almost snort.

Instead, I laugh, "No filthier than mine!"

She smiles, "I guess we gingers have to stick together, right?"

I grin, "Totally"

I become sober again, thinking business, "The way things are going, it looks like we're not only going to be fighting these other people, where ever they are, but others in this group as well," I take a deep breath, "What do you say we make a pact, an agreement to stick together and protect each other. In case it comes down to that."

I stick out my hand for her to shake.

I looked at his hand and then took it in my own, squeezing it and then giving it a firm shake.

"Sounds like a plan." I said smiling a little. After a moment, a moment to long probably. I drop his hand and straighten up next to him. "You're pretty good with your knives, and I think I'm fairly talented at....close up work. We will make quite a team sir." I said, trying to keep my voice down, I didn't want too many people hearing.

I already liked him. And I hoped he already liked me. I would have no problem protecting him and I prayed he would soon feel the same. I suddenly felt safer, just having one person, a friend of sorts would calm my nerves. Help me.

I absently pulled a leaf off Micah's head, flicking it away. "You been sleeping in the bushes?" I asked smirking.

The island air was cool. It was still early in the morning and it occurred to me that today was not the day I would be getting much sleep. The filthy boar had woken us up and duty and defense would keep us up. I yawned widely and put up a small hand to try and conceal it.

Micah,

Inwardly, I let out a sigh of relief. Not only because I kind of like Nadia, but also because I need to know that I can depend on someone. I give a quick look around; no one seems to have noticed our exchange.
Nadia reaches up and flicks a leave out of my long red hair, and I give an involuntary shiver. She touched me!

"You been sleeping in the bushes?" Nadia asks, smirking. I grin, as she yawns.

"You tired?" I ask, with a little concern, "I have feeling that today's gonna be busy, you know, with the whole "staying alive" crap. Maybe you should get some more sleep."

She shakes her head, "No, I'm good. We need to start preparing for whatever it is we're gonna do today, and I for one am not going to let Dill decide that."

I smile grimly, "No, me neither,"

Unconsciously, I give her hand a quick squeeze.

My face reddened a little as Micah squeezed my hand. But I returned it with out much thought. We would have to be ready for today and I couldn't be napping while everyone else was helping the productivity of this camp. I had sudden vision of a boar attacking me while I slept. I shuddered.

Putting my knife back in my boot carefully I placed a hand on each hip and cocked my head to one side. "Speaking of doing things today I'd love to know what I can do to help out around here." I sighed. Now walking up towards the dead boar, bullet in it's head, and already drying blood around it. I nudged it with my boot.

"Can you...eat one of these?" I asked. Stupid question, we probably could. I just didn't want to have to be the one to clean it. Then a thought came to me. I looked back to Micah.

"Where did you learn to use a knife like that?" I asked walking away again from the carcass. It would benefit me to learn how to throw like he did. Maybe he could...teach me.

Micah,

I blush, "That throwing I did back in the house was mostly chance, really...I haven't practiced much. I'm better with swords,"

Nadia puts her hands on her hips, "Really, Micah, I don't believe that for a second. You were excellent back there. Now, show me, please."

She widens her eyes, attempting to look pleading and innocent. I burst out laughing, "Okay, fine, I'll show you."

I turn back towards the woods at the edge of the beach, with Nadia following close behind. I pull my knife out of its boot sheath, choose a tree, gauge the distance, and throw the knife. It spins through the air, glinting in the early morning sun, hitting, surprisingly, the exact place I was intending, the middle of a forking branch. I stare at it.

"As God is my witness, I honestly have no idea how I did that," I say weakly.

Nadia laughs, "Bullshit, Micah."

I watched as the dagger flew through the air and I heard the satisfying thunk as it embedded it's self in the wood of the tree. I looked at him smiling. Where the hell did he learn accuracy like that?

"As God is my witness, I honestly have no idea how I did that." He says weakly.

"Bullshit, Micah." I say starting to laugh.

"Honest." He mumbles and I look at him through slightly squinted eyes.

I walked up to him closely and put my hand around the back of his head, lifting my leg slightly and pulling the dagger out. I spun it in my fingers and then gripped it in my hand. I had to look up to him a little. Being small had it's disadvantages. But people also tended to underestimate you.

"I could hit three different spots that would kill you right now with this little thing. I can get at it quickly and without most people noticing. But some one taught me that. My cousin actually. Now you have to be able to teach me something. Just try?" I said quietly, releasing his head. I skipped over to the forked branch and pulled his knife out. Walking back across the beach I dropped it in his hand.

"Try it again!" I said stepping back from him a little. Watching closely.

Ten Sauna

The sun wakes me up. I know because it's mostly quiet other than the sound of a few people mumbling a conversation. Dill is sleep on the ground beside me still asleep, along with a few other people who should be waking up in a few minutes.

I stand up and stretch, my back popping and cracking. I rub the sleep away from my eyes and yawn. The smell of meat cooking fills my nose and it instantly wakes me up fully. Meat? I'm suddenly so hungry. I follow the smell to the front of the shelter and see the two people who must have been talking, Micah and Nadia, but they stop and look at me. I smile at them and inch closer towards a fire that has meat roasting over it. I sit down next to the fire and look back towards Nadia and Micah.

"Is that meat? Can we eat it? Can I have some?" The girl Nadia clears her throat.

"Yeah, it's meat, but it's not done cooking yet. It'll be done soon though."

"Ah..." I look back at the meat and then back up at her.

"But I kind of want some now... I'm going to get some now."

"It's raw!"

I shrug and scrape a piece of meat off with another stick.

"Don't eat that, Ten..." I turn back towards them with a frown.

"You can't tell me what to do," I snap. I cough slightly and turn back to the meat. It is a little pink, but that's fine. "I like it this way," I mumble. I take a bite out of the meat and smile before getting up and walking over to where the others are standing. I smile at them and nod towards the meat.

"This is good. Who killed it?"

"Dill," the boy replies. I smile even wider.

"Dill? That's good. Where is everyone? Is everyone awake? Why are you two up?" I pause and tilt my head in confusion. "Why are you two up? What are you doing?"

"Nothing," Nadia replies, "talking."

For some reason the feeling that they're uncomfortable washes over me. I frown and finish eating my meat. They don't say anything else. I sigh and turn away, walking back towards the fire. I could wait here until everyone else woke.

Micah,

Okay, so that's interesting. Nadia can use a dagger in close-combat. Hmmm. I smile inwardly. I whirl around to face her.

"There are three things you need to throw daggers: balance, precision, and above all, relaxation."

I grin when Nadia snorts, "Really? That's the best you can come up with?"

I laugh, "Just watch. Balance, of course, depends a lot on the make of the knife or dagger in question. Yours, for example, is well-made for both close-combat and throwing, as the weight of the blade is a perfect counterbalance for the handle. Precision is more complicated," I cock my knife back, ready to throw, "You have to be able to exactly gauge the distance you are about to through and know how much force to put behind the throw. Lastly, none of that will make any difference if you're all tensed up." So saying, I shake my body to show that it's loose, look at the tree again, and throw. The knife hits at almost the exact same spot as last time.

"Now you try," I say to Nadia, retrieving my knife.

As we're practicing, Ten comes up, sniffing at the cooking meat, and tries to talk to us. I personally don't have anything against the guy, but it's a little awkward, especially when he starts eating the only half-cooked boar meat. Eventually, he wanders off again. I turn to Nadia.

"Show me your throw,"
