Timothy- Strength, speed, flexibility

Timothy turned around at the sound of Ali's voice.

"It's called a tree," she said with a laugh. "That one's a pine tree, probably about 80 years old."

He couldn't believe his ears. "80? How could something be so old?"

Ali pointed. "That one over there is about 250 years old."

250! That is a very large number, Timothy thought. He turned to look at Ali, and she made a gesture. He started to walk towards her, then realized she was probably beckoning to Seth. Timothy stopped in mid-step, and then, trying to hide his mistake (and his embarrassment), he went to where she was sitting and sat beside her anyway. He sat in silence for a moment, trying to sort out what he wanted to say. After several seconds, he said:

"If that tree is 80 years old," he pointed to the pine tree, "and that one is 250," he pointed to the oak, "then how old am I?"

*akh!*

Ali

I chuckled, gently placing Kitty's hand in mine.

"It's nothing silly. Just the needle from the tree. No medicine involved my dear."

Kitty looked at her finger suspiciously.

"Trust me Kitty." I said, sticking my tongue out at her.

I turned to Timmy, "I'm guessing no less then 15." I smiled. "Let me remember what I saw on your folder."

Ali tried to think back, she'd seen all their folders several times back at the lab.

"You're 14 Timmy." I smiled, suddenly remembering his file.

"When will I be as old as the tree?" he asked.

"A long. long time Tim. Very long." I laughed, leaning on the porch railing.

Ever (Sorry I haven't posted in awhile)

When Ever woke up, she was the last person in the room. She looked around and raised a hand to her eyes to shield them from the bright light streaming through the windows. She stretched and got all of the kinks out of her back and neck. Then she got up and walked outside to join the others.

She noticed that Tim and Ali were talking to each other and that Christina and Lyanna were holding a brightly colored thing and talking rapidly. Then she noticed Kitty and Seth. She laughed, when she realized that he had fallen just a few seconds before. She stepped down and started to walk towards the water that she saw standing a few yards to the side of the "house" as Ali called it.

She sat down on the edge of the water, not getting her feet wet, but allowing her to play with the water and look out over the surface of it. This is so familiar to me, but I don't know where from. She sighed. She turned when she heard someone coming up behind her.

Christina

After having her fill of looking at the flower, Christina looked around the yard. She saw Ever sitting by a huge puddle of water and went over to her.

"Hi!" she said happily.

Ever turned and smiled. "Hi."

"Isn't this all just great?!" Christina asked. She sat down next to Ever and dipped her hand in the water. It was cool and wet. She smiled, everything was just wonderful.

Seth

Dusting himself off, Seth stood and left the porch. The stupid bench on a rope wasn't something he wanted to mess with again. He saw Ali, Kitty, and Timmy sitting under a big brown thing.

He couldn't help but smile at the amazement of the younger kids. They were fascinated by everything, questioning nothing, never worrying. And Ali was so good with them, even if she was worried she couldn't handle teaching them all about the real world. Seth felt a pang of guilt from reading Ali's mind so often. He couldn't help it though, she fascinated him.

He stood in the middle of the green covering on the ground and watched the trio under the tree. He listened in on their conversation through Timmy's mind. Ali was telling them how old they were. Suddenly, Seth desperately wanted to know how old he was.

Perhaps, though, it was just an excuse to speak to Ali again... Seth blushed and shook his head, removing the thought. No, he was truly interested in the sake of knowing exactly who he was.

"Ali," he said as he walked closer. "How old are Christina and I?"

Robert, scientist

Clomp, clomp, clomp. The prisoner had taken to pacing his tiny room as he became increasingly more agitated. He'd been awake for about four hours now. He'd seen no one, been nowhere, and the ticking of his own watch was about to drive him crazy.

Every now and then he heard voices in the hall and saw shadows filtering by the crack beneath the floor. The test subjects usually paused and started talking in whispers when they passed his room; no one had said anything to him yet.

"Aagh," Robert said in frustration as he collapsed back on his bed. He was getting hungry and thirsty, and his bladder was getting very full. If Ali didn't want him to designate a corner of the room as a toilet, she had better check on him soon.

Kitty

I was sitting, talking with Ali and Timmy when Seth walked up to us. "Ali," he asked. "How old are Christina and I?" I looked at her expectantly. I wanted to know how old I was, too. "How old am I Ali?" I asked, letting myself stretch out over her lap. I smiled, happy at the warm sunlight on my back and my friends surrounding me. Now we were all looking at her, waiting. She looked between the three of us, a thoughtful expression on her face.

*gulp* Kamas is a little busy, so I'll be taking over Ali for the moment... I think we'll skip ahead to the evening? Otherwise, it will take way to long to gather everyone up. Sound good?

Ali

I gathered my thoughts as the kids watched me expectantly. We were all sitting in the living room, some on the couch and chairs, others settled on the floor. I stood in the doorway, thinking it would be the best place to address them from. Outside, the moon was rising slowly and shining a silver light through the windows.

"So," I started awkwardly. "Now that we're all clean and fed--"

"Most of us," Timmy interrupted. He had a grouchy look on his face, and his arms were crossed sullenly.

"Most of us, yes, but I promise we'll get more food tomorrow, okay?" I thought that might settle him.

He made a show of considering it, and then nodded. "Fine."

"Okay. As I was saying, now that most of us are clean and fed, there are a couple things I want to run by you guys."

"What kind of things?" asked Robert. This was the first time he had spoken to any of us since I had let him out of his room several hours ago, under close surveillance, of course. He had sat in moody silence throughout dinner, until now.

I gave him a look. "I was getting to that, Robert. Now be quiet."

Taking a breath, annoyed from all the interruptions, I continued. "First off, I think you all need to know how old you are, and when you were born. I'm sure Robert here will help us out with that. Won't you Robert?"

He looked dubious. His mouth opened, no doubt to utter some snide comment, but several of the boys shifted, and he paled slightly. All that escaped his lips was a timid, "Yes."

"Excellent. Secondly, you need rooms to stay in. Now, since there isn't enough for all of you to have your own, some will have to share."

Christina said, "Me and Kitty!" at the same time that Kitty said, "Me and Christina!"

I laughed at their enthusiasm. "Okay, well that's settled. Now, I think Java, you and Timmy should share a room."

Both of them spluttered at that.

"What?!" Java exclaimed.

"You can't do that!" said Timmy.

"We don't--"

"--even like each other!"

They stopped in embarrassment at the coincidence.

"Sorry, Java, Tim, but it's the way it's going to be. And besides, you could use a role model, Tim!"

Timmy scoffed and sat back, shaking his head. I wondered if he even knew what a role model was.

"As for the rest of you, well I think you can sort that out yourselves, right?"

They all nodded, and I smiled. "Good. And thirdly, none of you know anything about the outside world; If we're going to live like this, that needs to change. So, from now on, every day, me and Robert will educate you on the basics: reading, writing, colors, nature, math, history, that kind of thing. And once you're ready, we'll talk about school. Sound good?"

They all looked at each other curiously. I realized yet again that they just couldn't know what certain things meant. "I'll explain everything tomorrow. For now, you guys need to change into the pajamas I bought you, and meet your new roommates!"

I turned and walked into the hallway, waving over my shoulder. "Good night!"
