Kaleb crossed his arms and stood there not saying a thing trying to keep from snapping again. What had happened to the quite Kaleb? Syb, that's what happened. He almost smiled at the thought. He looked at the lady and tried to make his eyes as nice as possible, a hard thing to do when your a huge guy that can be intimidating.
I nodded proudly, staring my mom down like that was something I'd never do usually. So it didn't surprise me when her hand came across my face. I wasn't surprised, but it still knocked me down onto my ass.
Kaleb's arms came down and pulled me to my feet. I held onto him so he wouldn't lose his temper.
I freed myself from Kaleb and stared my mother down, I wasn't leaving until she understood.
"You chose a guy over your family?!" she screeched.
"I chose love over obligation," I retorted.
She looked like she was about to slap me again, that's when Kaleb stepped next to me and towered over her.
"Do you know what her father used to do to her?"
I tried to calm Kaleb down, but it wasn't working so much.
"He used to hit me," I said before my mom could guess and make Kaleb even angrier. My mom's reaction probably didn't help, she continued to argue that family was the most important thing in the world, more important than love. Finally Kaleb just wrapped his arms around me and towed me to the exit.
"I can't believe her," he grumbled as we climbed in the truck, "that's your mother?"
"You're family is right," I said proudly, "we are scum."
We spent a day in the trailer park trying to figure out what to do. The next day we tried our best seeing if we could make a living gambling but with no luck, we needed to learn how to play poker.
Asides from that we began to search for jobs, he got one as a security guard and me as a blackjack dealer in the same casino with the same hours.
It hadn't been hard for Kaleb to get the job. He was HUGE, they were going to pay both him and Syb 'under the table' because they were both so young, but they weren't about to pass up either of them.
"Where you from, kid?" The other security guard that walked around with Kaleb asked.
"Everywhere." Kaleb responded. The other got quite. Kaleb wasn't about to give up where his parents were because he wasn't about to go back.
"That girl of yours is mighty purty, this is the worst place to bring her."
"Why?" Kaleb asked not wanting Syb in any trouble.
"Pretty, innocent, girls aren't easy to come by. And that girl's got innocent written all over her in my book. Course I grew up with a whore as a mother so I can spot it a bit easier. Be careful who you befriend."
