I'd advice against the 'everyone does it' stance. Why? Because it's like an inventor saying everything's been invented. You think it's right to steal other people's ideas, then get famous/infamous over it and have the cheek to call it original?

Yeah I know Brom dies, but Brom and Obi-wan were not that similar, Eragon is NOTHING LIKE LUKE (my personal oppinion)

Handsome farm boy who doesn't know who is parents are and lives with his uncle who is killed while talking to Obi-Wan/Brom.

They are identical.

That is one of the basic fantasy story lines... It isn't the acctual basic story line that take in those many readers.. It is the story that is inbetween the lines that come after the basic story line...

It only became 'basic' when Tolkien created a wannabe franchise, every writer on the block thinking they can create original fantasy. It exists. May I direct you to my earlier comment on inventors?

I know that the father of Eragon was evil, but he IS dead, He stayed evil till the end and it was Brom not Eragon who killed him, plus Eragon has a brother, and I can't acctually find anyway to match Eragons brother to han-solo or Eragons cousin. Neither can I really connect Eragons girlfriend to Leia.

So you're saying that just because Eragon has a brother it's completely original?

I guess not. Some people are just jealous and other people just don't like others getting famous for copying another work or something like that.

And yes if you check my post you would see that i have not directly insulted him, or so i think. He is if you look in my profile one of my favorite authors too. So i am cutting him some slack in a way. I just hate to see him criticized if it is true i kinda go along it.

Yeah I know. I'm sorry if I sounded somehow angry.. I'm not, I just like a good debate, and I also like Paolini's books.

But I was tryingto point out the differences that all of these books have.

And I truly have read many books that start whith a handsome boy (not necessarily a farmer): Bertelli (farmer), King arthur (not farmer, servant.. well you get the point) and some many classical VERY old stories (before Tolkien) Where the hero was a farmer in the start or something similar and then becvame a hero..
To copy reality is good... But to create reality is much, much better.

Yes i know i agree when you say that farmer, servant etc becomes hero. It is a basic plot in fantasy. And i understand. I like a good debate too.

Fantasy these days reminds me of Glam/Hair metal scene back in the '80s. People copying licks, themes, progressions, etc.

Just let the whole thing blow over. In the mean time, write a witty parody or two of it. Instead of just letting readers wallow in their frustration that the other side doesn't see it like they do, make everyone laugh at how ridiculous some fantasy these days is! (no direct reference to Eragon intended)

Though it is a good thing that writers here share both bad and good feelings towards the Inheritance series books. we really should host an online debate for this one day.

Firstly, I have only read Eragon, and half of Eldest. I got bored and it is in my locker still, so I cant comment on whether the last one is better or not.
I found, as others have said, the plot rather bland, the characters a bit tacky, and the writing wasn't brilliant enough to pull it off.
Now Paloni isn't the only one to do a 'cliche' fantasy, a lot of fantasy has similar plotlines, but I find it is the characters and the quality of the writing that means I keep reading.
For instance, Raymond E Fiest (one of my fav authors) uses the young orphan boy who turns the most powerful mage in the history of his planet, after studying with a doddering old wizard and saving a princess and a lot of other stuff. It was what he did to give the character real depth that pulled that character off. (admittedly, the rest of the plot was pretty out there in places, but it had the basic boy-loses-family-turns-into-hero plotline)
Granted, Paloni started when he was fifteen. Cut the kid some slack. In ten years, maybe he will have learned and will have written a book we can all agree on :p
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.

Sure he mostly could do it. I'm fourteen and i cant even dream to write like him. So yeah your right. But then a gain he could think that copying others work is so easy he might just copy everyone else's work and publish it and gain world fame. After that he might start considering about world domination.

Right. Lots of cliche fantasy is out there, but it all has some good aspect that allows the author to pull it off. Cliche plot can be overlooked often when the characters are spiced up. The thing with Eragon is thay every single aspect of it is just...ok. Nothing is exceptional, it's all just ok.

And Paolini is a bestseller, which gets us REALLY mad.

I'm probably going to get his future books from the library(Because I refuse to actually PAY to read his stuff). Mostly to see what he decides to copt next. I'd really like him to copy me when I get published. Then I can sue him and get rich. It's perfect!

If they were identicle, Eragon would be a character with some depth and liked by many critics as well as fans. And not hated so glaringly by so many.

I hate Inheritance too, but when I mull it over in my mind, Paolini should be cut some slack. I mean, he was led to believe that he was a terrific writer by having Eragon become a bestseller when really he just marketed the s**t out of it. And rather than help him to improve, his parents seem to have just wrung the franchise for all its worth. (resulting in a series of terrible books and an even worse movie.)

Ye I agree.

A friend today suggested (well, yelled) to me that the only reason I hate him is, well, out of jealousy. He doesn't deserve my 'jealousy'. Although, to be honest, he wouldn't listen to what I was trying to say so hey!

I had a conversation with a friend, "Jack", who likes Eragon. I converted him.

***

Me: What is it that you like about Eragon?

Jack: Maybe the reason you don't like him is because he uses big words.

Hmm...well, that is a fault of his. But I'd better play it safe.

Me: It's the plot. It's exactly the same as "Star Wars". 4th episode.

*Delves into plot summary that fits both*

Jack: Woah...I never noticed that. You're right.

***

I'm in a good mood.

I just read Brisingr and I have to say it was much better than the first and second ones. Eragon is also less of a jerk.
Admiration: Our polite recognition of another's resemblance to ourselves.

Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

Confidence: the feeling a person has before he fully understands the situation.

Shin: A device for finding furniture in the dark.
