Gregory-

I looked down at the leaves in my hand with distaste. If I had been any less tired I might have been tempted to just drop them and go off into the woods to look for berries and roots. But we had been going at a quick pace all day with only a couple of stops, so right now all I could think about was getting some nutrients into my body. Before I knew it I had wolfed down my portion of leaves, leaving myself slightly dizzy.

"By the way, when you said it would take a week to get to the temple, did you mean an Eniyeth week, or an Earth week?" I asked Jaden.

"I meant an Eniyeth week, but that's only if they've finished it," she replied.

I didn't bother asking what she meant by "it", if she didn't say what "it" was the first time, I didn't think she'd tell us at all.

Jaden-

It was a tiring day and everyone fell asleep faster than I expected. All except Dusty.

“What’s wrong?”

“Are we going to go back home once this is all over?”

“I can’t answer that yet. And when Sam and I do, we need to tell all of you.”

“Why do I somehow take that as a no.”

“We will tell you… later. Now rest, you need your sleep.”

I didn’t know if Dusty fell asleep, but I closed my eyes and drifted to a dream without realizing that I had done so.

Dusty laid next to where Caleb was and she sighed. closed her eyes. She wasn't happy. She wasn't sure she wanted to stay here at all.

Erica-

I sat suddenly sat up, breathing hard. Someone else did the same, staring at me with wide eyes.

Nightmares. I hadn't had one like this in the longest time. I lookd at the girl, Dusty, who was staring curiously at me. I took in a breath, steadying it, and smiled weakly.

"Sorry, did I wake you?"

"No, I couldn't sleep." she said, shrugging. I was feeling claustrophobic. I stood up and Dusty had a questioning look in her eyes.

"I need to run."

Jaden-

Dawn came and woke most everyone up. Everyone with the exception of Lillith. As we ate the meal leaves, Sam nudged me and pointed her out, still snoring away.

“Lillith! Do you want to join us?” I called out loudly. She shot up and rubbed her eyes before glaring and staggering (still tired) over to where we all sat.

“Are we almost to the town yet?” she whined.

“Almost Lillith,” said Sam.

“What happens when we get there?” Haven asked.

“We wait, and if everything goes right we will only spend two days in the town and then leave.”

“And if it goes wrong?” Dusty asked.

“I can’t quite answer that. I’m still trying to stay optimistic about the situation.”

The rest of the breakfast was eaten in silence.

Gack! So So Sorry! :(

Haven
~~~~~
Once breakfast was eaten, we all got started trekking again. Erica fell into step beside me. Caleb and Dusty were in the back, laughing and poking each other. Gregory (grr) and the rest of them (I still couldn't remember their names half the time) inbetween us and the lauging siblings. Apparently Kneph and Sam were having some sort of 'bonding moment' because Sam was smiling and pointing out different types of leaves and stuff to Kneph, and Kneph looked interested. Lilith was floating around on the outskirts of our little band, looking like a zombie.
"So how long do you think it'll be before we get to the town?" I asked Erica.
She shrugged. "They said 'soon', whatever that means."
I nodded. "Yeah. Whatever that means."
We walked in slightly awkward silence for a little while.
"Ummm....where did you go last night?" I asked her, hoping to strike up a conversation.
She turned to look at me quickly. "What?" she said.
"Where did you go? I saw you get up..." I said, suddenly feeling like I shouldn't have asked.
~~~~

There. Short. Pointless. Just trying to get back in. Again, guys I'm so Sorry.

Gregory-

Finally our hike was taking us up into the foothills of the mountains. I used to live in Colorado before I moved to New York City. And the thought of being in the mountains again made me forget momentarily that Erica was walking with Haven and not with me.

Running quickly up to Jaden I asked, "How much longer till we reach the town?"

"Just a little longer," she replied calmly.

"Okay, I think I can reach it in just a little shorter," I said running ahead of the group.

A few seconds later though Sam caught up to me.

"Am I invited on this thrilling run up the mountainside," he said with a smile.

"If you can keep up," I said smiling back.

{{Erica}}

"I...uhh..." I watched Gregory run up ahead and almost smiled as I remembered last night...oh jeez, Haven...his question-last night. I glanced at his face and saw that he was a bit embarrassed. I tried a reassuring smile but was afraid it didn't work out.

"I was running." I said finally, looking at the ground and trying to match his long strides. Stupid band camp poisening my mind. It always forced me to stay in step with everyone and walk in a straight line.

"Running?" He asked.

"I..." Suddenly I felt as if I were giving away a secret none should know. Only my brother, younger sister, and my...my dad knew of this. "I get claustrophobic every once in a while. There's only two things I can do to get rid of it. Run and play music."

I didn't tell him the whole story, of how I run until I almost pass out and I play my guitar until my fingers bleed. He shouldn't know that- heck, I don't tell anyone that. Never have, never will.

A memory popped into my head and I was about to ask Haven what he didn't want to return to when Lillith fell to the ground.

It should be a crime to wake me up before 4 in the afternoon just to go to on a stupid hike. I heard Twili laugh and the others murmuring with worried expressions on their faces.

"That was deliberate." I groaned and Twili laughed harder. Why does he find it halarious for me to quote a nonexistant dwarf? Or does he exist...stupid stalker teachers...

Speaking of stalking teachers, Jaden came to pick me up. She looked at the front of my white dress/pants thing and saw that mud had completly covered it. That's what you get for making me wear a dress and go for a hike.

"Next time you wake me up to go on a hike to a village that never seems to appear, DON'T."

*Ha, I get the yummy chocolate chip cookies.*

Gregory-

Sam and I had been running for around ten minutes when we both stepped out of the forest.

"Well, here we are," said Sam.

Below us in a valley was the village. It wasn't very impressive, but it had a charm to it, almost like it had come out of a fairy tale. But that's not very surprising, I thought to myself, since you are pretty much in a fairy tale right now.

"We'd better wait here for the other's to catch up," Sam said, "I don't think Jaden would be very happy if we went into the village without her."

Sorry I haven't been on. The network at my school has been down for the past week so I haven't been able to get on.

Jaden-

We eventually caught up to Sam and Gregory who looked down onto the village that lay below.

“There it is,” I said and even heard a tone of relief. Hiking was not my favorite part of being an elemental or an elemental mentor, but it must be done. No point in arguing with the inevitable.

“It’s not that impressive,” said Twili.

“No, but it is inhabitable and it has beds. I should think after spending the last few nights in the woods, you would want beds.”

“As long as I can sleep,” Lillith huffed. I saw Gregory turn and look at oddly.

“What happened to you?”

“The inevitable fate of hiking. Seriously, don’t they have trains or something… horses?”

“Not right now. Don’t expect to see a horse in this town, nor happy villagers.”

After what seemed like hours Jaden finally convinced the village guard that we were non-threatening and he let us through the village gates.

"Boy," I whispered to Erica, "Jaden wasn't kidding when she talked about unhappy villagers."

She nodded in agreement. A cloud of fear, sadness, and anger seemed to cover the whole village. There were not many villagers in sight, but the ones that were seemed like they never had a happy day in their lives.

Sorry. Major school project and bunches of tests kept me from posting. Hope this works...

Sam-

We entered the village and I stared around, dismayed by the change I sensed in Jaden and my only months of absence. There seemed an almost visible gloom clinging to the town, like a faint fog. The buildings seemed grayer, the people moved around hunched into their clothes, looking nowhere but their own plodding feet. I frowned.

Jaden edged her way over to me as the kids stared around.

"Something has changed," she whispered, her eyes following one villager as he hurried around us. He didn't even bother to glance up at the group of strangers standing before him.

"You don't say," I muttered sacrastically, watching the man as well. "Hey, wasn't that...Tristen? The man who used to own that hat shop?"

"Maybe. I wonder what's happened to everyone."

I shrugged. "Beats me. It's not like I've been here any more recently than you have."

The teenagers were shuffling there feet as we stood there in the middle of the street. Some were looking at Jaden and me expectantly, waiting for us to give them direction. Others were beginning to wander off.

"We should probably find somewhere to eat," I ventured, looking around again.

Jaden-

I nodded silently and Sam and I showed the teenagers over to a known pub. It was a bit too quiet as we walked inside and I made sure that I still had a knife in my boot. I missed my old weapon and the time when no one would ever bother me often when I had it stretched across the table.

“Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to come to this town,” Sam muttered. I nodded sadly.

“I didn’t expect Sarnom’s hold to be this awful yet. He has done something wrong and I fear that the rules have been flipped against us.”

“Of course they have, the question is what are we going to do about it?”

“May I help you?” a female voice droned from behind the counter. Jaden turned and laid a pile of coins on the counter.

“A meal and could you tell us where we may find a room for the night?”

“This town doesn’t like strangers.”

“We are only staying for one night and we will be off in the morning. A meal please,” said Sam.

The woman nodded and walked to the back room of the shop with the money in her spider-like hands.

“Sam, do you recognize who that was?”

“No, who?”

“That was Beth,” I whispered in horror.

"Who is Beth?" I asked.

Jaden spun around, apparently not aware that I was listening.

"Oh, it doesn't really matter," she said nonchalantly, recovering fast from her surprise.

But I had a feeling that it did matter somehow. I walked back to the table where the other elementals were sitting and told them what I had heard.

"So you've figured out that they've been keeping secrets, good job!" Haven said sarcastically.

I ignored him, "Am I the only one here who thinks that we should get some answers?"

"And where would we get them, from Sam or Jaden," Twili said gesturing to their figures at the counter. "I don't think so!"

"I think Sam would tell us," Lillith said suddenly.

"And why would that be?" asked Twili.

"Because," she replied, "Sam talks in his sleep."

Do not! :P

No, just kidding, feel free to use that if you think it'll help the plot. Just leave it open for me. :D

Sam-

Gregory turned and left, and I let my eyes lock onto Beth's disappearing form. Was it really her? No, it couldn't be. Surely she would've recognized us. Or me, at least. No, it must've been someone else...a look-alike, perhaps...?

"That can't be Beth," i stated firmly, looking at Jaden once again. But I couldn't even convince myself, even as the words spilled out of my mouth.

Jaden shook her head. "Sam, I'd know Beth just as well as you would when I'd see her. And that was definitely Beth."

I frowned and let it go, not wanting to think about it anymore. "So where are we going to spend the night?"

She shrugged. "We'll find a nearby inn. Perhaps the Sword and Staff is still open. We'll try there. Maybe Calin still owns the place and we can get a discount...if she even remembers who we are."

"If."

When we are children we seldom think of the future. This innocence leaves us free to enjoy ourselves as few adults can. The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind.
