Karana

I followed behind Kai, watching the clouds around us flash and rumble. This place was scary, dangerous, and unwelcoming. I wanted nothing more than to enter the shrine and get out of there.

Then that reminded me. "How much difficulty will we have getting in the shrine?"

"Not much," Kai said. "Despite the name, all it really is is a small stone structure with stairs. It doesn't have any walls, just a high base and a small roof over the dragon statue."

"Dragon statue?" Tyrant asked.

Kai nodded. "It's the shrine's seal. Each Power Shrine has a statue of the Earth Dragon that corresponds with its element."

"How do we break the seal?" Renian asked.

"One of the reasons why none of the Power Shrines have been robbed of their energies by people who would use it for their own gains is because of how the seal works," Kai explained. "The seals were created using a special type of Dragon Knight magic. The only thing the seals recognize is the energy patterns of the Tenjin. So, even if someone were to use magic to break the seals, the seals wouldn't recognize the magic they use and won't break. You see, the Tenjin acts like a key to its own power. That's why I have to bring it to each of the shrines, so it can break the seal and absorb its power."

Karana

I nodded. "It makes sense, and is pretty smart."

I turned my gaze ahead and stared at nothing in particular. This was great, but it felt wrong. Only two days ago, I had been screaming at my father and heading out to join Kai on the road. Yes, the journey had begun, but not the way I had wanted it. Not the way I had dreamed it would begin.

I remembered his face, contorted in rage and shock, and a tear fell from my eyes.

(By the way, it's been a week, not two days since they left Kuri City. If you remember my first post of the characters once they get out of the forest and Kai teaches them how to fly you'll see that I did a time skip.)

Kai saw Karana shake her head from the corner of her eye. When he turned his head to look at her a single tear rolled down her cheek. He stopped, and so did everyone else. "What's the matter, Karana?"

"This isn't how I pictured it," she said. "When you asked me to come with you and your mother I thought it would be like a normal journey on the road, not one big fight for survival." She shook her head. "Not only that, I still remember the fight my father and I had when I told him I was leaving, and it hurts every time I think about it."

"You miss your family, don't you?" Kai asked.

She nodded.

He sighed and put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "This isn't the way I thought it was going to be, either," he said. "I wanted nothing more than to have a peaceful life with you and my mother without all the hardship I had to endure in Kuri City. Now I have to save Horagothien from an upcoming disaster."

"How can you sleep at night knowing the next day may be your last?" Karana simply asked.

"I don't think about it," he said. "We could all die tomorrow, or the day after, or three weeks from now. It's part of doing this dangerous quest, and it's a big part of life. No one can predict the future, the only way you can keep it from getting to you is not to worry about it. You've got to roll with the punches.

"As for your father, do you think he's dead?"

"Yes, I mean... I don't know..."

"Do you really think he's dead?" Kai asked again.

Karana thought for a minute, then shook her head. "No, I don't."

"Then he's still alive, if not physically then in your heart. As long as you believe he's alive you'll see him again someday."

"I just wish I could have been there when the dragon attacked, then I would have known for sure if he survived or not," Karana said.

"You're lucky that you weren't there to see it, Karana," Kai said. "I know for sure that my mother didn't survive. I watched her die with my own eyes. She was a wonderful person who cared for me with all her heart, and her life was taken for it. You have no idea what it feels to have someone taken from you for a reason like that."

Karana

I nodded, hugged him briefly, and wiped the tears away. He was right, and I knew it to begin with. It just...hurt.

I looked ahead. We were nearing the base of the mountain. And there was the path to the inside.

"Ready to go in?" Tyrant asked the entire group.

A simultaneous confirmation went up.

(Actually, the shrine in my story isn't inside of a cave, but this works out just fine. Let's roll with it.)

Kai's group went into the cave to find the Power Shrine of Thunder. Kai knew they were close because he could feel its energy pricking at the back of his mind.

Kai lit the way by creating a flame in his hand with his magic. After walking through the tunnel for a few minutes they came across a large shrine with stairs and a small roof inside a cavern. Electrical energy jumped off of the structure every now and then.

"Is that it?" Renian asked. Kai answered with a nod. "Then let's get this power you were talking about."

"Wait," Kai said.

"What is it?" Karana asked.

Kai pointed at the base of the shrine. Apparently, they were not alone in this cavern. At the base of the shrine sat a creature. Its body had the build of a human, but some of its features were that of a dragon's. Its head, left torso and arm were human, but its right arm and legs were black and scaly. Its dragon arm was larger than its human arm and its hand was formed like a claw. Its legs were built the same way as a dragons, too. It also had a long black dragon's tail growing out of the back of its body. The only clothing it was wearing was a torn pair of pants. Four wings grew out of its back. Its upper right wing, on the same side of its body as its dragon arm, was black and leathery. Its remaining three wings were white and feathered like a Dragon Knight's.

As Kai's group got closer the man's eyes opened. His left eye was a normal green human eye. His right was yellow with a thin lizard slit pupil. He stood and said, "What are you doing here?" Anger showed clearly in his voice.

Karana

I stayed beside Kai even as the creature turned towards us, approached us. I was terrified, but I was ready to fight alongside Kai if necessary.

"What are you doing here?" the creature demanded again.

"We're here for the power of the shrine. For my friend's Tenjin," I almost stammered. It finally stood before us, and I tensed when it turned its gaze on me.

(By the way, this guy is called a Draconic, a species crossbred between a human and a dragon. Also, this weekend is May long weekend in Canada, I'm not sure if you have the same thing in the States, but that means I'll be gone for the whole weekend plus most of Monday to go camping with my folks. So, this may be my last post for a few days.)

The man dragon eyed Kai up and down. "You are the new Zagarosseff?" he asked.

Kai nodded. "I believe I'm the new Legendary Dragon Knight, yes, and I need the energy from the Power Shrine of Thunder in order to stop the Earth Dragon of Darkness."

"Then you've come a long way for nothing," the creature said. "If you try to steal the power from this shrine, I'll kill you. Besides, a half-breed like you could never be strong enough to be the new Zagarosseff."

Kai hated being called a half-breed. "Strong words coming from a Dracoinic." The man's eyes twitched at the sound of that word. "I don't care if you believe me or not, I'm not leaving until I get what I came for."

The man suddenly punched Kai in the chest. The force of the attack was so strong it sent him flying into the cavern wall a few yards away, cracking the wall and creating debris.

"None of you will leaving this place alive!"

Karana

I screamed when Kai was sent flying. That was so easily done!

Stay calm, Karana. Stay cool!

I raised my hands, and shouted. "Oraza!"

The ball of fire shot forth from Karana's hand and made contact with the dragon-man's body. The creature turned his angry eyes toward Karana, smoke rose from his nostrils and out the sides of his mouth. He held his human arm toward the ground and shouted, "Zago Gaiaroakk!" He lifted his arm and large chunks of dirt and rock rose into the air with it. He thrust his arm forward and the rocks followed, soaring toward Karana.

Blinded with panic Karana did the only thing she could think of. She rose her arms and used the spell she had seen Kai use. "Zuu Kkumnuss!" A weak dome of blue energy surrounded her, but when the rocks slammed into it she lost her concentration and the magical field shattered like glass against the force of the attack. One of the rocks hit her in the chest and knocked her to the ground.

Tyrant came to Karana's side as Renian squared off against the creature. "Are you hurt?" he asked.

Karana took big gasps of air as she struggled to catch her breath after having the wind knocked out of her. After a few breaths she shook her head and said, "No, I'm alright."

Renian held her hand out and shouted, "Raiakk!"

At the exact same moment she uttered her incantation the creature said, "Gaiaroakk Kkumnuss!"

A bolt of lightning sprang from Renian's hand, only to be deflected by a wall of earth and stone that suddenly rose from the ground in front of her target. Before she could realize what had happened the enemy smashed through the wall of stone with his dragon arm and rushed Renian. He grabbed her by the neck with his larger arm and lifted her off the ground with the greatest of ease. She struggled to escape from his crushing grip but his steel-like strength was unmoving.

Renian~

Renian struggled against his grasp, kicking as hard at she could. She finally calmed and tugged a bit on the flame, holding out her hand. Her eyes seem to flicker as she smiled lightly, pushing the pain away.

"Electrify Tere!" Renian yelled, touching the hand that suspended her above ground. Hundreds of lightning blots shot down the dragon-mans arm and throughout his body, making him drop her. She kicked him in the chest, flipping backwards and landing in front of the group, a permanent snarl on her face.

The dragon-man stood up, growling threateningly. He ran at Renian, weilding a long spear. She jumped on top of the spear, smiling down at him wickedly. "Oraza!" She yelled, the fire shooting the dragon-man in the face. He stumbled backwards, dropping the spear as he covered his face and yelled.

(Raiassou Tere. Also, the enemy doesn't have a spear, he fights with his fists. If someone doesn't mention anything about a character using a certain weapon you can safely guess he won't have one. I'll let it slid for now, but please keep that in mind.)

The dragon man snarled his rage at Renian, smoke and small embers escaping his mouth. He let out a fearsome roar that shook the cavern as he charged forward once again.

Renian held out her hand again and yelled, "Oraza!" A ball of fire shot out of her hand and slammed into the enemy's face. The creature plowed straight through the ball of fire as if it was nothing. Renian barely had enough time to jump out of the way before the dragon man threw his large fist at her.

The punch missed her and hit the ground. The force of the punch made the ground underneath it crack and buckle. The vibration caused from the attack was so great it made Renian, part cat demon, lose her balance and trip. The creature turned again to Renian and stared at her with a rage so great it froze her in place with fear.

"Renian!" Tyrant ran toward Renian as fast as he could in order to help her. The enemy was already lifting his arm to deliver his strike when Tyrant stopped in front of Renian and braced himself to take the hit.

"Mozadodo!"

There was a flash of bright pink light, then Kai was suddenly in front of Tyrant and Renian holding the dragon man's half-thrown punch with both hands. Using his strength as a half demon Kai was able to stop the creature's attack.

The two of them pushed against each other in a contest of strength to see who would push who off balance, Kai with both arms and the enemy with just one.

Kai smiled as he whispered, "Orazamno Mo Oraza." The dragon man's eyes widened as Kai's arms suddenly flexed under the sleeves of his cloak. Before the enemy could react Kai twisted his body, lifted the creature's arm over his shoulder and threw him as far as he could. The dragon man crashed into a stalagmite with enough force to crumble the hard rock.
