Maximum Ride: The New Breed

I heard a crash come from the canopy outside of the shallow cave we sat in. Jolting up, a startled ZT looked outside, "What the hell...?" he asked.

I jumped up and ran out of the cave, "Who's hurt?!" I called out.

I heard a fading groan to my right and saw Rose lying beneath the tall tree trunks. Shit. I jogged over to her and went down onto my knees. Rose's foot was bleeding, it looked like she had hit a tree or something. ZT, Lexy, Blade, Stella, and Colt had gathered around her, their expressions ranging from shock to anger.

I switched my eyes and immediately saw the currents. The currents had formed a bubble around us. Uh oh, they suspected Reed.

As if on cue, Reed came plummeting downward, flaring his wings and setting himself down gracefully. He ran a hand through his windswept hair, his expression worried, "What happened? I saw Rose fall."

The wind was heading toward him, I smiled kindly, "I think she might have hit a tree branch." I looked down at her foot again.

Reed shook his head slowly, "She wasn't anywhere near the treeline."

Was he trying to build the flocks tension? I saw the wind creep away from us ever so slowly. "What happened then?"

His eyes were wide, "I dunno. One second she was flying below me, I saw a city a little away..." he stopped, "The city!" he exclaimed, "There was an abandoned city a little ways off! I was circling around and saw the emptiness..."

He trailed off into his own thoughts. I sighed and switched my eyes back. The color of everyones face had returned and I started feeling Rose's foot. It was twisted at an awkward angle, I was afraid it was broken. I tried to move the foot back but Rose woke and pushed herself up quickly, "Someone shot me!"

She evaluated the flocks faces and tipped her head up to look at the sky, "Who shot me? Reed was flying and then this big echo. I mean, this plane..." she looked down, her face confused, "No, there wasn't a plane." She looked up at me. I merely shrugged. The pain must've registered in her brain because she quickly turned her head to where it lay.

"Ouch." she said. Her tone was calm. I wondered what had happened to her foot. Oddly twisted and no pain?

((Didn't know if you had a plan for Rose, Fairy, so I left it open))

* I didn't have a plan I was just creating drama.

(Lexy)

I glared at Reed, everyone knew I was pissed too I think we all were. I walked up to Reed and pushed him as hard as I could with my hands, I only made him rock, but not lose his balance.

"What the hell?! I didn't do anything to her!" Reed yelled.

"WHY!" I started to yell but I stopped, "Why would you let this happen to her what's wrong with you?" I said coldly.

Reed glared back, "I didn't see you flying by to help her. Don't pin this all on me."

"Yeah and I'm suppose to believe that it was just a coincidence?"

"Believe whatever the hell you want Lexy." Reed shot back.

I threw a fist hard at him making his neck crack but I knew I didn't kill him. ZT and Colt pulled me away from him, they almost couldn't pull me back.

((Mayze))

I felt the currents before I could see them. The fury radiating from me probably sent to wind back a few hundred feet. I could even feel the stillness in the air and I was sure everyone else could. Lexy was still struggling against ZT and Colt, who were telling her to calm down. Blade came over to help. The managed to pull Lexy away from a glaring Reed.

I started to shake, "Lexy." I said, attempting to keep my voice calm. She ripped her arms away from Blade, Colt and ZT and crossed them over her chest. Spreading her wings out she flapped them until she took off. Everyone looked up after her except for Blade who turned her head towards me.

"Do you mind going with her?"

She shook her head. Before she took off I told her we were heading for the city. She nodded and took flight, her hair whipping behind her. I sighed and tried to keep myself under control. ZT came behind me and put his arms around my waist, trying to make me feel better. I was calm for the moment, clearing my head from all the fury that made me want to scream at Lexy and tell her it wasn't Reeds fault.

I turned back to Rose. She looked light enough. "Pull your wings back." I commanded. She tightened them against her back and I bent down to pick her up. She realized what I was doing and protested, "I don't need my foot to fly!"

I sighed and straightened up, "Fine." I looked at Reed who had his arms crossed over his chest, his fists tight against his ribs. "Mind showing us to that city of yours?"

"My pleasure." he said venomously. He crouched and sprung up into the sky. I help Rose get up and flying and waited until everyone else had taken off before I myself had followed Reed.

(Rose)

Rose glanced around at everyone. Slowly her thoughts were connecting like a puzzle. She frowned deeply.
"It, wasn't him...Or was it?.....I can't remember.....but..."she muttered.
"Rose it wasn't me!" Reed shouted.

Lexy was being restrained by Colt and ZT. Rose leant away from her then stared down at her own foot. The blood was coming through her shoe. Mayze untied the lace and carefully pulled it off. Rose tried to wriggle the toes of her pink socks and couldn't.
"That looks horrible," She commented calmly.

Mayze frowned at her. Colt was staring at her, his eyebrows raised.
"I think she hit her head on the way down," he said.
Rose put her hand to her head then lay down as Lexy and Reed fought above her. She could remember crashing through the branches as she fell as if it was something in her distant past.

Mayze helped her to her feet, threw her up and launched her into the air. Mayze followed after her, glancing out the corner of her eye to check Rose was suddenly going to drift away.

Rose was being to think everything more clearly. The pain in her foot was still stabbing at her but flying made things better. She kept nervously glancing about for any other louds noises

(Lexy)

I faught against ZT and Colt. I still glared at Reed and he glared back at me, maybe it wasn't his fault, maybe I was just trying to blame someone for what had happend with Rose. Since Reed was the closets target... or maybe he did shoot her I had no idea... I was angry and I'd never admit it to a persons face but I was scared. I looked at Reed's swollen black bruised jaw. I didn't take that shot back for a second, I'd earned it.

"Let go." I pushed ZT almost off of my arm. Colt gave me a hard shake from behind.

"Knock it off Lex, maybe he didn't do it." Colt said.

"I didn't!" Reed yelled.

"Oh, shut up! That's such bull! The only person you care about is yourself. " I yelled.

I didn't really know, I couldn't lose Rose she was one of those people I could trust and I was running out of them.

[Blade]

Blade pursed her lips, worried and confused. She dipped one wing and circled around yet again to make sure no one was dropping from the sky. Luckily, no one was. She looked over at Reed, waiting to see "his city".

(ZT)

I flew into the air with a barrel-roll, following Reed and staying with Mayze.

Reed-

As I flew toward the city I started to feel the suns energy flowing to my neck and repair the damage that Lexy's punch had done to me. Of coarse I had no intention of getting mad, but Lexy could be a real jerk sometimes.

Just before we reached the town Mayze said, "Somethings wrong with this place."

"And that's why I'm going to check it out before any of you go in." I said.

"So you can go and get an ambush set up, no way." Lexy added nastily.

Mayze shot a glance at her then said, "I do think that at least one person should join you Reed."

"I'll go!" ZT added quickly.

I didn't object as there were worse people I could go with.

"Then it's settled." Maze said.

A few minutes later ZT and I arrived in the town, which looked like it belonged in museum it was so perfect.

"Something really weird is going on here." ZT said.

I nodded and said, "I'm going to check out that building."

ZT said nothing but followed me to the low sprawled out structure that I had referred to. As I stepped inside, a feeling of dread enveloped me, and I was slammed with a memory.

I was in a town and there was fear all around me. People were frantically trying to get away from the nameless fear. Someone then turned me around and said, "Come with me." But before I could go with him something came out of a store. It was a rat, but not your ordinary kind of rat, this one was at least two feet high and three feet long without it's tail. It looked at me with it's bright red eye's and cracked it's tail menacingly. Then there was darkness.

"I really think that we should get out of here." I said frantically.

But before ZT could respond I saw in the darkness a familiar set of red eye's and heard the crack of it's tail.

(ZT)

"Reed!" I called. "It's on the ground! Get into the air!"

I flew up and slammed my head on the ceiling. I had forgotten we were in a building.

"Owwww... damn."

I struggled from losing consciousness. Reed was frozen. I saw the door open next to him. I tried to call to him again, and I dived at him. We rolled out of the building, and finally Reed woke up. "Let's go!" he called.

We started flying for the flock.

(gosh what do people have against rats? )
[Blade]

It had only been about ten minutes when ZT and Reed were back with them, shooting away from the town like it was their worst nightmare. Blade glanced around at the others, wondering if they knew any more than she did. They looked completely confused.

"What's going on?" Blade shouted, feeling herself react to the situation with an automatic dose of adrenaline. She was ready if there was a fight. But she wasn't sure if she could handle the thought of another flight.

(Rose)

Rose watched ZT and Reed pelt towards the rest of the flock, hovering in mid-air. She could tell they were scared but she was still light headed and dazed.
"What going on?" Mayze asked.
Rose frowned at the figures coming towards her. It looked like ZT was arriving quicker.
"It's....White.....Whitecoats.....is it?" Rose asked.

Her head was pounding and throbbing as she squinted. Reed was on track heading straight into Rose.
"Rose!" shouted Colt.
He grabbed her elbow and waist and dragged her up. Rose gasped in pain as her ankle clicked and her foot hung limply. She glared at Colt. He raised his eyebrows and let her go. Reed shot past then span round and came to a halt.

Lexy scowled at Reed as he panted and pointed down at the town.
"What are you doing back?" she quizzed him.
Reed gaped as Lexy then stared at ZT. Rose glanced at everyone, feeling the tension.

Reed-

"We need to get as far as we can from here!" I said.

"There was a monstrous rat back there." ZT said, answering roses question.

"But I'm sure if all of us went back we could kill it." Blade said.

"No chance," I replied, "there's to many of them."

"What are you talking about?" ZT asked me, "There was only one rat."

"And perfect timing too." I went on, gesturing to the sunset, "Now running is not an option."

"Shut up!" Mayze shouted. I stopped talking. "Now please slow down and tell us what's going on." she finished.

(ZT)

I glanced at Reed, hoping he would begin. I was as confused as they were, almost.

(Lexy)

As I hovered about ground with everyone else I started laughing. Reed glared at me.

"What's so funny? We have to get out of here, now!" Reed shouted.

I laughed harder like a person about to go insane. "Your affraid of a rat? C'mon Reed I expect a little five year old to be a affraid of a rat but you-" I kept laughing and almost couldn't stop.

"There are way to many in there, and their huge. Their not your average rat. I mean maybe even bigger than their suppose to be... like mutated." ZT said.

"Well, couldn't you just scare them off?" Rose asked.

"You wanna try? Go ahead I really don't care... But when they smell the blood dripping off your foot your gonna be like Thanksgiving to them." Reed said.

"Isn't there a roof enterance?" I asked. "We can work our way down. Well, what do you think, Stella? Or should we just leave?" I looked at everyone ZT and Reed looked scared but you could tell they were both trying to stay strong.
