Rekhyt-
I watched warily as the others ran off. Obviously they didn’t know who or what I was. I bit my lip, dreading what would have to be done.
I figured I’d give them a chance.
“Wait,” I called desperately. One stopped and turned back; the boy my master had taken from his cell and brought to here. Soon the others slowed, too, all eyes on me.
“For what?” one of them asked.
“If you leave…” I trailed off. Maybe I shouldn’t go there quite that fast. Let’s try a different approach.
“I can’t go.”
“Why?” the guy from earlier asked, taking a step towards me.
“I am bound to one of the scientists. I am her slave.”
“What are you?”
I sighed deeply. “I am a Djinni. A shapeshifting spirit, if you will. I was summoned from the Other Place and forced to work as a slave even while they did test after test on me. If I leave, she can just summon me back to her and force me to reveal everything from where we’re hiding to what clothes you have on. There is nothing I can do. If I try to break free or kill her, I die.
“And if you leave, I’ll be forced to stop you against my will. My master commanded me to. If I disobey her, she can condemn me to any torture she sees fit, or kill me even, though I know she wouldn’t kill me.”
I saw another, long-limbed creature enter the room. He eyed everyone critically, their black depths that rivaled mine lingering on me for a moment longer. He nodded and gestured to me, though what the gesture meant i was unsure.
My mind struggled to find a way out of my current assignment.
