I've imagined that Mage's world is a medieval one (with the exception of some steampunk-esque automatons) so I had to spend the past ten minutes looking up what ventilation was like in medieval times. >>
It looks like they didn't really have air vents in the modern sense of the word; they just had openings in buildings. Now that I've remembered his world has automatons, I'm guessing that it's a little more advanced than that? But Mage isn't all that old and wouldn't have been exposed to a concept like that, so I'm keeping him embarrassed and ignorant.
