hold my own. (Song lyrics)
Guitar chords: Capo 2nd/ G, D, Em, C
Strumming Pattern: Down, Down, Up, Up, Down, Up.
OR
Down, Down, Up, Up, Down, Up, Up, Down, Up, Up
Strumming Pattern: x2 per verse, x1 for bridge & chorus
Verse:
I thought I knew you/I guess I was wrong
I didn't know what to think/so I wrote a song
You liked me dependent/When I was glued to your side
When I relished in your presence/and lived by your existence
Pre-Chorus: (Strumming pattern change: x1 only per chord)
But, it's not fair/I don't have live by your rules
And, I don't care/If that means I let go of you
Chorus:
I like me the way I am
I don't have to change just 'cause you said I can
I love me the way that I am
You don't have to love me like this, no,
I can hold my own hand.
(Music break)
(I can--) (--hold my own hand)
Verse: (Strumming pattern returns: x2 each chord)
They told me "Forget about/Your life before."
"It didn't matter then/your only friend was the floor."
And, I know I deserve the pain/I ripped myself away,
But I have better things to do/and it's not worrying about you.
Pre-Chorus: (Chord x1)
'Cause, it's not fair/I hate living next to you
I shouldn't care/about your feelings the way I do
Chorus:
'Cause, I like me the way I am
I don't have to change just 'cause you said I can
I love me the way that I am.
And you don't have to love me like this.
I can hold my own hand
Bridge: (Several voices here. Like a crowd singing)
"I like me the way I am."
"I don't have to change just 'cause they said I can."
"I love me the way I am."
"No one has to love me like this."
"I can hold my own hand."
x (haven't decided yet...... Maybe x4 or more)
(Slowly, hushed)
Yet, I can't..
'Cause,
Chorus: (Slower & picked through)
I don't like me the way I am
I'm uncomfortable in my own skin
I hate me the way I am
I wished you would have loved me then
'Cause I don't know how to hold my own hand.

Hellooo!!! I really like that this piece isn't just a conversation to one's self, but also a chant for themselves (and others to resonate to)! This poem isn't establishing this complete, undeniable self-love, but is instead an active journey towards that self-love and an attempt at processing it despite the underlying doubt and discomfort about themselves. That journey isn't a linear process, but is instead a very bumpy road with its highs and lows—which is executed quite well with the presumed boldness in the beginning before the ending hits you hard with this pure admission of their deep insecurities. The bridge also adds a lot to this execution;
The way these similar words of self-love are wrapped in quotation marks—in contrast to the previous lines that are meant to be sung but not framed as something to be "said" like the bridge—alongside the emphasis of multiple voices, gives a sense of this powerful truth of self-love. However, that truth turns out to be more of a facade of the singer's deep insecurities, as it builds up to the singer admitting them at the end.
These aspects of this song is all is very resonating, real and raw!! This song is a very human response of being in a relationship with major attachment (and implications of toxicity/toxic attachment). These lines between themselves as an individual and as a partner to be alongside someone has blurred, and so this continuous struggle to be on their own is even more powerful and more grueling for the singer. Their difficulty to cope rings so true for many others in various of other scenarios or situations, and this way of casual, grounded way of conveying that struggle makes the vulnerability of this piece so much more raw and even more resonating!!!
Great piece!!! Keep writing!!!
Thank you for the revieww! <3
Hi! This song is so emotional and I was singing it out loud with a melody I made loll. It’s CATS here to leave a comment/short review? Let’s dive in!
It seems so energetic and bold at the start and the middle but at the end the narrator loses hope. He or she was so dependent on their relationship with someone. It’s actually so emotional and I can tell it is written from your experience. I wish you well, my beautiful friend. This talks about the insecurities of people on the inside, especially for teenagers. It makes them think at least someone understands them in this huge overwhelming world.
Overall I just really loved it.
I want to propose to sing this maybe? If you are allow of course, since I made up my own melody but it’s all yours.
Happy EVERYTHING!!!
Love,
CATS

Thank you for the review!
The song does already have it's own chords and melody, but you 100% can go ahead and sing it! I would love to hear what you've made and how different it is from the original.
Just credit me (and @ if you can) and label yours as a remake or something along those lines so I don't lose my song <3

Probably so, haha.
I try to help by posting my writer notes. When I write my songs, I typically write out how things go to make it as less stressful as possible on potential musicians. But sometimes it's confusing.
It's also why I write down the chords and my strumming pattern I used when writing this piece <3
Don%u2019t have a guitar ToT
I play piano.....wait I have an idea gimme a few hours XD
When I'm transposing from guitar for piano, I just reuse the chords lol

Hi! This is so emotional. I kind of understand what you mean. I have a twin brother and I used to be so dependent on him, and I'm trying to be my own person more. The final chorus...it brought tears to my eyes. But it's a wonderful song. I can kind of relate to some of it, and I think the way you've made it relatable is brilliant. I do write song lyrics sometimes to vent my feelings, so I can relate to that too. This is just really emotional, and I'm so glad I read this. Keep up you wonderful work!
Thank you! I appreciate this so much. This song I wrote to make myself feel a little better about a year and a half long relationship that broke apart. I like to make my songs hit home, so I'm happy to hear it touched your heart <3
don't mind my... quirky writer notes...
