To Cruel Minds

It didn't make sense. Not that it ever did.. But Carmon never missed. She never missed a shot, a hit, a mission, she never missed. So why did she now?
What came over her when she fell into the snow? What was she thinking when her blood started to seep into the gorgeous white? Well, she thought many things. Many words ran through her mind. Including the thought that she didn't love her wife. She laughed at herself. How cold. How cruel. How ironic.
She hums with a cruel smile plastered on her lips. The cold lieutenant lays, bleeding out in the fridid, icy snow. Is this to be her deathbed? She wouldn't be surprised if this is what the gods above had planned for her. To die in a snowstorm, as punishment for her cruel behavior towards her team and family.
She rolled herself onto her back, running a gloved hand over her pale, scarred face. Her gas mask had been tossed several feet away. It was damaged, pieces of it broken off and scattered. Of course it was shot. Who wouldn't love to see The Legend's face on the field. She laughed at herself again, her other hand laying over the side of her ribcage where a bullet had penetrated and narrowly missed the plate of her vest.
"Oh, how sad…" She mumbled to herself. "How silly of me…"
She wasn't trying to pity herself, though her voice held that same soft rasp. She didn't feel bad at all. Not for the mission. Not for her team. Her eyes narrowed. They'd only see her as a monster. A tool. Even Raylene. Oh… Raylene…
Carmon had to admit, at one point she did love Raylene. Even married the woman. And all for what? To be betrayed? Carmon figured Raylene had loved her too, but that god awful woman sent her on a mission that was nothing but suicide. Carmon had tried to brush off the gut feelings. She tried to consider that when Raylene wished Carmon a safe mission, she had put her hands on the lieutenant's jaw and smiled warmly.
"Come home safe to me, Carm." Raylene had said. Her eyes looked soft at that moment. Carmon had ignored the fact that her wedding ring wasn't on her finger.
However, she can't ignore it now. She doesn't love Raylene. Raylene never loved her. With a sharp sigh, Carmon forced herself up, leaning heavily on a tree. How did it even come to this? She shook her head, shaking the question away. It didn't matter. Not now. Most likely not ever, but why didn't she just stick to the plan? Avoid relationships, what happened to that? Why did she get herself involved?
Before she even realized, she was on the ground again, groaning from pain as the blood leaked from her. Was this what she deserved? She questioned. Perhaps it was. The German soldier was never very grand to begin with. Just purely and utterly cruel and heartless. It just didn't make sense to her. How did she miss it? She never even saw the sniper. She had let her guard down, gotten too comfortable. She let herself collapse in the snow again. She couldn't think about that right now. She's too focused on the pain.
She must've laid there for hours, the cold seeping through her uniform, snow covering her legs, slowly burying her. She didn't even register the feeling of hands pulling her out of the snow pile, she was so numb. She simply groaned again as the pain erupted all over. She struggled to open her eyes. Maybe Raylene was back… Maybe the woman really cared… No, something's not right. Raylene would never wear her hair up like that… Who is…
"C'mon, Lt, get up." The voice said. Carmon would recognize that voice anywhere. She'd never forget how that Mexican accent had taunted her so many times.
"River." Carmon mumbled. Dakota simply grunted in effort, yanking the German up.
"Stand up, we gotta go." She said in a sour tone. Carmon was leaning heavily against her, her arm slung over the sergeant's shoulder.
"What are you doing?" Carmon questioned. "Stop, you're gonna get killed."
"Will you shut up for two minutes and let me take care of you!" She shouted. She looked up at Carmon, her gaze filled with worry. She wasn't here to play games.
"I don't need-"
"Aye, dejarás de intentar pelear conmigo y simplemente lo aceptarás!" Dakota said, pulling Carmon forward.
"English, River. I don't speak your nonsense." Carmon replied bitterly.
"I said, shut up and deal with it." Dakota hissed, her grip tightening on Carmon's side. Carmon winced but silenced herself. She saw the way Dakota was acting. She didn't want to risk getting yelled at.
The two stumbled through the wooded grounds, making their way out of the enemy territory. Dakota was mumbling to herself. Cursing silently towards Raylene. When they got to a landed helicopter, the door slid open with a loud bang. Hope and Khailen were quick to exit.
"Dakota, get her in!" Khailen commanded, reaching out to help support the weight.
They managed to get Carmon up and into a seat on the helo before Khailen closed the door and Hope got to work. The aircraft was silent as it lifted up, only the sounds of moving items disrupted it as Hope worked to fix the damaged caused. She reached up, struggling to remove the vest on her. Dakota stepped in.
"Careful. She's hurt enough." She said, gently unclipping the vest straps and sliding the gear off.
She sat next to Carmon, holding her close to herself. Her hands were steady as she supported Carmon. While Carmon didn't like to be seen as a liability, she accepted the touch. It was a sharp contrast to the rough play the two participated in on base. It's softer. Dakota's voice was soft as she spoke.
"Raylene was working for the enemy. They planned an ambush… she was trying to get rid of you." Dakota said. Carmon didn't respond.
"We came as soon as Dasee hacked through Raylene's firewall and found out." Hope mumbled, looking up at Carmon as she finished wrapping a bandage.
"How did you-" Carmon started.
"I had my suspicions." Khailen explained, stepping forward. "She was clever, but see-through."
The aircraft went silent once more before Carmon spoke again. "Who's flying this heap of junk?"
Dakota chuckled and Khailen smirked. "Oliver." Hope said simply.
Carmon hummed. Oliver was… A reckless flier to say the least, but it worked. Her thoughts drifted to her traitorous wife. She wanted to tear the woman apart. She relished in the thought of hearing her screams of pain during torture. They'd have to get information out of the woman anyways. It benefited Carmon anyways. She figures she doesn't have to give up on relationships.
She can just give up on her marriage instead.

Wow, what an interesting story! By the end I was really wanting to know what happens next. I like how you gave enough information in terms of the setting to paint a picture of what's happening but let specific details be up to interpretation. I also loved how more of the focus was more on how Carmon was feeling rather than inconsequential details. Though, if I had to nitpick; the name switching in the character River/Dakota was handled rather confusingly and it's not really conveyed that they are (or at least I'm assuming) they are the same character. Something to tell the audience that, because details like that are important to make clear early on. But overall a great story!
I'll take that into consideration, thank you!
Yes, they are the same person. River is Dakota's callsign. In the book I'm making, it'll dive deeper into that and it will show how she earns the nickname! I hope maybe that will clear it up. I'm seeing that a few people are also getting confused with the nickname. I thank you for pointing it out though!

She never missed, she was as precise as the come. But she still got betrayed by love. This is a really good story in my opinion, my only criticism would be that as a short story there are a lot of character names mentioned, if it is part of a larger narrative then you can disregard that. I enjoyed the acceptance of death from the central character only to be pulled back into the thick of it, and have to actually deal with the grief of being betrayed like that, instead of dying. I would read more if there was any. Good work
I'm glad you liked it! If you liked this one, I have many other short stories from the same characters. A lot of the names mentioned are characters I use often. Carmon is by far, my main. Dakota is a second. River is Dakota, that's just her call sign.
A lot of my stories play a part with each other. They all tell about big events or moments that have happened within this unit! I'm sure you'd enjoy some of those. If you liked reading about Carmon, I'd recommend reading Keeping Distance. That's basically her character arc, and it's my national 1st place short story!
I'm currently writing a story about the unit too, just to get these short stories on a timeline. I'll be putting chapters out soon!
I thank you so much for reading though! I hope you enjoy the others if you choose to read! <3

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!
Shalt we commence with the ghoulish S’more?
Top Graham Cracker - Carmon missed a shot on the mission, but she doesn’t feel bad about that. No, what she feels bad about is the fact that she loved Raylene, that she trusted Raylene, that she married Raylene and that Raylene never loved her back or even cared for her. She was planning Carmon’s downfall all along…
Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - There’s just one part of this that doesn’t make sense. It’s when Carmon asks River to speak English when it’s Dakota speaking. Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be and if it is, then please ignore this.
Chocolate Bar - I love how you wrote the shift of Carmon’s thoughts. At first, she thinks that everyone betrayed her, but at the end, she learns that her team always has her back and that Raylene was the one who betrayed her. I feel bad that Carmon’s wife didn’t really love her, but at the same time, seeing Carmon seethe with rage over this woman was…interesting. I can’t wait to see what Carmon will do once she finds her!
Closing Graham Cracker - Carmon’s sadness has melted down into anger. She’s done many great and terrible things on the battlefield, but goodness, this new type of fury…Raylene is going to be shaking in her boots by the time Carmon is done with her, seriously. I’ve enjoyed this little short story and I’m excited to see what Carmon and her team will plan against Raylene and the others.
I wish you a terrific day/night!
I thank you so much for this review! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I understand that it can be a tad confusing with the names, But "River" is Dakota's call sign. Her full file name is Dakota "River" Ramirez. Which is why Carmon calls her River. Dakota actually broke protocol by calling Carmon her name while on the field. Carmon's call sign is Legend. Which is what Dakota should've said, but I guess worry got to her. I've made some files/documents on the characters, redacted too. I'll make sure to add those soon. I hope this clears up the confusion!

Thanks for letting me know!
This short story I made out of a challenge from a friend. Make a short story in 20 minutes. Little did I know how difficult that would be. I didn't even get to respond before she started the timer lol.
So, this short story is a tad bland and quick, I apologize for that, but I hope you all enjoy the results of my little challenge!
