I am a book
Hidden among many people.
You do not see me.
Short and pushed to the back,
I watch others be picked
Hoping myself to be chosen someday.
*
But I am a glanced at barely book,
Out of curiosity,
Picked up,
Read tentatively,
Fallen in love with,
An infatuation.
*
But too soon comes the end.
Placed back down,
Returned to at times,
Too soon forgotten.
*
Someday, I will be that book
The slow read
Not a page turner,
A life changer.
You will leave me a different person.
But you will still leave.

thegreyreality,
I love your work so much that you leave me speechless (but that doesn't mean I would leave you with just a comment).
You said the truth and nothing but the truth. Cliche it may sound, but that's what really happens. A book is chosen, read for a few hours, or days maybe, then kept in somewhere where it could not be seen until a few months or years.
In this work of yours you might have been referring to a book. Something which was usually seen by people, but not usually read for reasons like: (a) It's not cool to read that book; (b)They might make fun of me if I read that; (c) It's the last book that I would like to read; (or things like that).
This book might have been picked up too many times but then put back to where it was since "it doesn't feel cool" to have a book like it. It's so sad for this book to be easily accessed by most people yet commonly rejected also. If I were that book and I can move and talk, I would really talk some sense out of the people around me and tell them how valuable I am.
How amazing that book might be, it can change lives and I think it's for the better, the only sad part is that it's not really appealing to people and so it is just so easy for them to turn their heads away from that book and continue living their lives as if they know it all.
You might also be referring to someone. Someone whose worth was not known to the people around him/her. He/she might be the one that was only called for when needed. Who was seen as useful when the time needs it, but is actually worthless when "cool times" come. They might be the people who have stories to tell yet were still not allowed to tell any for fear that they might cause a ruckus. They might be the people whom when they get to tell their stories, are then forgotten 'cause they have gotten what they have wanted. People might have then learned a thing or two from them, but still those people might have just easily walked their way out of it since they don't want to be suddenly angelic when in fact deep inside they feel demonic. They avoid to care and to be compassionate.
I might have said a lot. I just love your work. When the time comes that people are courageous enough to speak what is really in their mind, when they don't care whether they be accepted nor rejected for doing what's right, then I might call it my end, for then I see courage which none of the other men have seen.
Keep writing.
As someone who loves books and who has far too many books on her bookshelf, I can really relate to this brilliantly-written poem.
I love the way you've taken an object that we're all used to seeing and turned it into something with a story and feelings.
my favourite part of this poem has to be the final stanza where we have the book longing to be a page turner and a life changer even though we know that, as it's already been written, it cannot become something that it isn't already.
However, I think that we can all relate to the last line, whether we're a book or not. For me, it reminds me of friends that I've had who have changed when they met me but then they still left. That's just my take on it though, you might've had something else in mind.
I loved this poem. Keep writing and Happy Halloween
Thank you
I love your take on this!
Overall this is a very interesting poem, I love how you talk of yourself as a book and then you go into explaining the ups and downs of it.
1st Stanza:
I love how you talk of yourself being that book hidden at the back of the shelf. I feel like many people can reflect on it as they too could have been that quiet kid who many forgot, always picked last in games. The word Hope gives you the idea that everything will be fine, that you would be picked someday. However, you could also see this as hope with a sense of doubt seeing that all of these over books leave you in the shadows as they get picked one by one. A sense of doubt that you would be left there forever because nobody likes you. I would like to say well done on managing to create an entire story in 6 lines.
2nd Stanza:
I like how you talk of being found out of curiosity, how your wish was granted. This makes the audience too feel happy about what has just happened. This is because you have managed to enchant them with a story of sadness that makes the audience feel sorry for you. When you talk of the reader falling in love with you as a book, as they enjoy each line, as they love your story. The reader soon remembers that you are an actual person in this story and they see that you have found the one you love.
3rd Stanza:
Unfortunately, in this stanza, you talk of being returned. What your weak hopeful heart once thought was love was just a story that had to come to the end at one point. This emphasises the idea of you being like a book, giving an entire new level of meaning and importance to the poem.
4th Stanza:
I love how you start this stanza off with the phrase 'Someday'. This revisits the idea of hope. I like how you go higher in hope throughout the stanza but then suddenly drop on the last line. This last line makes the poem very memorable and leaves the reader thinking in pity.
Thats all from me,
A very good poem,
Godly
You captured my thoughts. Exactly. Thank you.
