// me and my friend do writing in a call together, this was during one session where we both wrote and then reviewed/read/interpreted eachothers works..
[text format]
You could wish it all away, into deeper sleep.
Somewhere monumental on a hill, you glanced at me,
Restless running through the halls to find your room.
What did you tell me before you left?
IM ALIVE
But you’re getting away,
And we’re going separate ways,
two shattered windows and a dream.
Two burnt ends and a head trip.
Atop that metal swing, 20 more rounds you wouldn’t call it quits.
Let’s just pretend, that those bottles are our best friends,
We aren’t drunk and you’re just telling me these things.
It’s never MEANT. You tangled your hands into my skull and called it a planned situation, meddling with prohibited exceptions, setting them in stone. You spoke so fast, I held your hands, you told me all of this was a daydream. Tossing, turning into morning.
Could you tell me, if you still feel Alive,
as you crawl between the sheets.
You’ve always said
That it’d get better.
Stench of polish on your shoes,
Keys inside the engine,
One more shot and it won’t hurt,
Dreams of yours will collide with time.
You know I tried to get away,
Just like that once,
The future freaks me out
Our bones will dismantle under the limelight
We can try to forget that we are built off skin, let’s just hope we’re both thinking too much. Put on the fears as clothing of comfort.
We can just hop into a cab,
Let the driver talk us out of going for another round,
Holding strands over the toilet, are you happy?
It can’t be that bad, if it makes you happy.
Put your number into my phone,
as if I wasn’t blocked before
But I’d rather pretend we never knew each other
Than to confront our imprints from before
Mirroring onto each other, do you finally see yourself?
When you glance into the iris, can you reconcile with your past
Do those street signs waver memories into your direction
Can you walk down the same path, and recollect what's been mine
and you learned the same words that she did.

Hop here with a review. Please excuse my yapping and why this review is so long is mainly that. But let's get into the review ~~~~
This piece is a whirlwind of emotion, memory, and disorientation. It reads like a fever dream, like someone trying to make sense of a night that never ended, or maybe a relationship that never really began or ended cleanly. It’s fragmented, nonlinear, and full of raw feeling. You’re not telling a story in the traditional sense. You’re letting the reader sit inside a mind that’s unraveling, remembering, regretting, reaching. And that’s what makes it so compelling.
The opening line is soft and haunting. You could wish it all away, into deeper sleep. That sets the tone immediately. This is not going to be a clean narrative. This is going to be about longing, about escape, about the desire to forget or to rewrite something that already happened. It’s a quiet line, but it carries weight. It’s about avoidance, about the pull of unconsciousness when reality is too sharp.
Then you shift into something more visual. Somewhere monumental on a hill, you glanced at me. That image is vague but evocative. Monumental could mean anything — a building, a moment, a memory. But the glance is what matters. It’s fleeting. It’s loaded. It’s the kind of look that stays with someone long after it’s over.
Restless running through the halls to find your room. That line feels like a dream. Like someone chasing something they can’t quite reach. It’s physical, but it’s also emotional. It’s about searching, about urgency, about trying to reconnect with something that’s slipping away.
What did you tell me before you left. That question is the emotional hook. It’s quiet, but it’s aching. And the answer is shouted. IM ALIVE. All caps. All urgency. All contradiction. Because being alive doesn’t mean being present. It doesn’t mean being okay. It just means not being gone. And that’s not enough.
Then the separation begins. You’re getting away. We’re going separate ways. Two shattered windows and a dream. That line is beautiful and sad. Shattered windows suggest violence, damage, exposure. A dream suggests hope, illusion, something fragile. You’re pairing destruction with longing, and it works.
Two burnt ends and a head trip. That line is cryptic but evocative. Burnt ends could be cigarettes, relationships, nerves. A head trip is confusion, distortion, maybe even intoxication. You’re painting a picture of emotional chaos.
Atop that metal swing, 20 more rounds you wouldn’t call it quits. That line is so specific and strange. It feels like a memory that only makes sense to the people who lived it. That’s what gives it power. It’s not trying to be universal. It’s trying to be true.
Let’s just pretend, that those bottles are our best friends. That line is heartbreaking. It’s about coping. About pretending. About using something external to fill a void. We aren’t drunk and you’re just telling me these things. That denial is so human. So familiar. So sad.
It’s never MEANT. You tangled your hands into my skull and called it a planned situation. That line is wild. It’s visceral. It’s confusing in the best way. You’re describing intimacy and manipulation and confusion all at once. Meddling with prohibited exceptions, setting them in stone. That phrase is poetic and strange. It suggests rules being broken and then made permanent. You spoke so fast, I held your hands, you told me all of this was a daydream. Tossing, turning into morning. That is such a soft ending to a chaotic moment. It feels like waking up after crying.
Could you tell me, if you still feel Alive, as you crawl between the sheets. That line is quiet and desperate. It’s not just a question. It’s a plea. You’ve always said that it’d get better. That line is familiar. It’s the kind of thing people say when they don’t know what else to say.
Stench of polish on your shoes, keys inside the engine. These lines are grounded. They’re physical. They bring us back to the real world. One more shot and it won’t hurt. That line is chilling. It’s about numbing. About coping. About trying to make pain go away.
Dreams of yours will collide with time. That line is poetic and vague. It suggests that hope will meet reality. That something will have to give.
You know I tried to get away, just like that once. That line is quiet and sad. It suggests history. Repetition. The future freaks me out. That line is direct and honest. It breaks through the poetry with something raw.
Our bones will dismantle under the limelight. That line is stunning. It suggests vulnerability. Exposure. The idea that being seen can break you.
We can try to forget that we are built off skin, let’s just hope we’re both thinking too much. That line is philosophical and strange. It suggests that overthinking is a kind of protection. That forgetting our physical selves might help us cope.
Stay amazing! Keep writing! And Happy Review Month!
<3 Thank you for such a gorgeous review, and taking your time to read and take-apart the meanings of my poetry. I hope you had a fun read and I adore how you looked deeper into the poem, slipping inbetween the lines.
Hi! My reviews change every time. But it’s CATS here to get this amazing poem out of the green room! Let’s dive in!
Wow. The first lines really show how she could block out reality. I can see this is about a love relationship!
Aww they broke up! He talks about how he’s alive but lost his love. Maybe make the it’s meant and the words bellow into lines.
I love the rhymes, it really moves me along smoothly!
They just ignore each other. As much as I would love if they could still be friends...this is the reality.
Overall I love this poem because of its words and rhymes speaking truths about the reality of our world. Sometimes we just got to move on. This poem was really good and I look forward to more!
Happy RevMo Happy Reading Happy Writing And Happy Poetry!!!
Love,
CATS
Hey Cats!!! Thank you so much for another review <3 I'm really glad you enjoyed the poem!!
No prob!!! Luv it
I really like this poem, very ambiguous especially the last line. A relationship is known and I interpreted it as a friednship that has turned so dramatic and hurtful that it's more than just a friendship now, no matter what. The 'between the sheets' lines imply a lot but what's more important is how they got in this difficult situation and what it has done to them.
The line that really got me I feel was the 'We aren't drunk and you're just telling me things'. A lot of the poem speaks on how drugs and alcohol are dangerous, esspecially for teens when it's your first time having them and how they can really affect relationships with those you share them with. When you start drinking too much specifically with someone else, just the 2 of you, the more you partake in this new ritual the more you change and your relationship with the person does. The new things you find out about them that you already knew because your worry makes you focus a lot of your attention on them is very well presented especially in those lines.
The contrast between the rural imagery at the beginning and the urban imagery at the end is a very appealing metaphor as it is honest and genuine about how diffrent enviroments affect us. The rural imagery makes a very intimate, disrespected distance between the characters and the urban imagery at the end pulls them closer but really there is so much more friction pulling them away from relating to eachother. This is an incredible poem.
:') Thank you for such a insightful review, especially picking up on the use of imagery from small confined hills to the bussling of city streets. I hope you have an amazing rest of your day!! You are a joy <3
