Is it a firework

Or a gun, a glass bottle, a shot into the dark

Is it a joyous burst of tears, or the popping

of Champagne Bottles

To drink till dawn, waste in the morning

The ticking sound sedates you, is it time?

Is this a new year, or just changes of a number?

How do we define the new year,

We say its-to remove the old, bring in the ‘new’

Celebrate the change of a number, yet the real change

Should be what we want to be.

And let the snow melt,

Let the star collapse into your grace

Watch the sky change, as the wind blows away

Watch it all dissipate

In front of

You.

If I could, I’d lay them all out on a wall. Call it my own home, a museum of all the things I’d kept, because we all deserve a piece of self-made history.

Truly, I don’t wish for anything more but to be kinder. To learn to grow into a warmth that’ll shoulder any burden.

Visit every scenic stop, look over every mountain, ponder the existence of why it is until really it all starts to slowly make sense.

What have I learned? That the stars in the sky don’t need a name to be admired. Anywhere you go there’s a special sight, you are the sentiment, As much as I want to be read entirely like a book, and uncovered from a perspective not of my own. I’ll learn to love myself without judgemental eyes.

We’re all made of stardust. Adore yourself as you would the essence of tranquility. Uncover your hands, live for yourself, and may you too find your own spark.

Tangling my own loose ends into each other,

I don’t know what I’m seeking out,

Where to search, go or look.

Faces of those adored in my heart, always guide,

Because why untangle all my string when I can

Build off of those knots and retry once again.

Look for the beauty in the tiniest nooks and crooks

In between the trees, every surprise is a new day to

Adore.

Review

Hello oirichu! Happy Review Month! Valkyria here to leave a short review for your work. Let's get into it:

It's good to see another one of your works on YWS! I really enjoyed the last one I reviewed, and this poem is no different. The speaker takes us through their new year's resolutions, but goes deeper, crafting these themes of self-love, empathy, and the beauty of nature.

There are three sections in the poem. The third section is what I mentioned above: the resolutions, but the first two sections are just as important and well-written; questioning exactly how to define or celebrate the new year. And the middle section has the speaker wanting to make visual memories out of them.

I adore the collage of photos! It feels like a visual component of the middle section. It's a little hard for me to read on my screen, but it looks like all the words on the photos are taken directly from the poem. That's really cool and adds a new layer of art to the piece!

The writing is beautiful and adds so much imagery. Well done!

Hello Valkyria!! Thank you so much for such a sweet aand short review <3 I'm really happy you got to enjoy the visual aspect of my poetry!!

Hello oirichu! Here for a quick review.

I like the journey this poem takes us on. We start more general, reflecting on new year traditions and questioning the purpose of these on a wider basis, and then we move towards more specificity in the second section. Here, the speaker touches upon their own personal musings and outlook on a new year, and the poem ends off on a hopeful touch note "Look for the beauty in the tiniest nooks and crooks / In between the trees, every surprise is a new day to / Adore." I like that this poem takes a positive turn, as there was definitely an opportunity to take a more skeptical approach for exploring endings/new beginnings. It creates a sense of anticipation and hope as the reader.

The visuals add a nice touch. It kind of reminds me of a moodboard or vision board in its collage-like nature. I'm curious about the pictures themselves — is there meaning behind each one? The subject matter in them seems unrelated to the writing itself, so I'm unsure of how this adds to the poem's impact, but I considered maybe these are self-taken photos? In that regard, it would make more sense. Otherwise, I recommend opting for pictures that enhance the imagery throughout the poem (eg stars, fireworks). I think there could be some more variety in these images, as some of them are very similar.

What have I learned? That the stars in the sky don’t need a name to be admired.

Possibly my favorite part! The idea that beauty doesn't need a label to be acknowledged, that there's no "correct" form of it. Simply it being admired is enough.

Overall, the whimsical and hopeful message throughout this poem is the standout quality for me. I think all the star/sky imagery is in line with this; there honestly could have been more of that in the beginning to really cohesively tie it together, but I also like this how it is! And the visual formatting of the poem is a nice touch. Great job!

Thank you so much for your review Calamity!!! :) The photos are mine, there isn't much intent behind them as more of my collages for my posts (usually edit collages of my photos for ig/for friends/for myself). But I think I mainly used the roads and horses to somewhat symbolize freedom and choice!! Thank you for your kind words, I'm really glad you could enjoy it and find a quote for yourself to admire!! Keep on shining <3
